Any pilots here? I'm curious about this rare type of landing..
CloudyHead replied to CloudyHead's topic in The Bonfire
I remember reading about a journalist who was flying to Afghanistan who talked of a special type of landing they would have to make as to avoid being shot at by taliban forces who had positions close to the airport. They would keep a high altitude until they were directly above the airfield, and then "nose dive" all the way down and level off just in time to make a regular landing pattern. I got curious about this again because i just listened to Graham Hancock and he was talking of a similar landing his pilot had to do in Ethiopia back in the 90's to avoid being shot at. What is this landing called? It sounds more intense than skydiving IMO.. lol... -
How loud are freefalls - from wanna be skydiver
CloudyHead replied to clavus's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This is kind of unrelated, but for my first 3 jumps I would get this extremely loud crackling in my ears after my canopy opened. It felt like my ears wanted to pop but were not able to, and the pressure was so intense it actually hurt. It felt like there was 300PSI in my cranium as i could hear the "swooshing" sound of fluid in my head. After about 10 seconds, this built up fluid in my ears would "drain back down", and i was fine. Since then i haven't had that problem (maybe i'm swallowing more often during freefall and naturally balancing the pressure). -
i think this is the perfect video to say... "perfectly good airplane my ASS"
-
they seem to be freefalling pretty close to the plane? wouldn't you want to track further away?
-
i think i'll just keep jumping solo for awhile. LOL

is it wise to buy a Pilot 188 with 120 reserve?
CloudyHead replied to CloudyHead's topic in Safety and Training
"Jason, I'm deeply sorry for the error on my part but it's a typo. The reserve is a 190. I'm fixing my ad now and adding the serial numbers to the rig, main canopy, and the reserve to hopefully avoid anymore confusion. Again, I'm deeply sorry for any confusion. I'm emailing you photos of the canopy, rig, and the reserve pack log. " wow.. im very interested now.. i think this might be my first rig. i'm already reaching for my wallet. -

i'd rather be surrounded by 200 square feet of perfectly good parachute than 200 square feet of perfectly good metal -
Canadian (CSPA) licensing question?
CloudyHead replied to Rayy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Oops sorry I meant not to worry about the skills grid in the PIM manual SPECIFICALLY for the A license.. because he's already asking about A. The PIM manuals in general have been very helpful to me from the very beginning.. there's some really basic stuff in there -
Canadian (CSPA) licensing question?
CloudyHead replied to Rayy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Don't worry about your A license yet, that's when you want to jump with buddies. Just focus on getting your solo at your DZ first. Then to jump solo in any dropzone in canada, you need to get your CSPA membership. That way you are solo certified NATIONALLY and can start working towards other licenses (A,B,C...) Once you graduate the PFF, you are solo certified at the "club level" (not CSPA solo yet). To get the CSPA you have to complete a few more tasks which will be listed on a piece of paper they give you after PFF graduation. It is basically a CSPA membership application that your skydive school examiner has to sign. It should only take a few more jumps to complete the required tasks.. just some easy things like an intentional unstable exit, landing within a certain distance from target, an emergency procedures quiz, 10 minutes of total freefall time, etc... oh and you have to mail in $45. so yeah.. its Tandem/IAD > PFF > club solo certified > CSPA solo certified > A > B > C > etc... they'll explain it all to you when you graduate PFF! I'm working towards my A license right now.. there are tasks to complete in every aspect of skydiving, from packing, to freefall to canopy control. The skills grid is all outlined in one of the PIM manuals (download them from CSPA). But really i wouldn't worry about any of that until you have your solo. -

It could be condolence card to your family that you leave behind. Do you like those too? "We are so sorry that your son decided to deploy a reserve normally used as a toy soldier parachute. He must have been doing LSD and thought he was made of hollow plastic? So sorry. best wishes" -

I was just about to post the link, but you beat me to it! Yes this was the rig i was interested in. I was very interested in a Pilot 190 to begin with, so when i saw this rig my eyes lit up. But then i saw the 120 reserve.. hah. no thanks.. -

(assuming i have transitioned down to 190's by the date of purchase) I think the only thing worse than shitting myself during emergency procedures is shitting myself realizing i have to land such a small canopy. Is there something i'm missing here? Shouldn't both canopies be relatively the same size? -
hey man i'm hoping to get to vancouver soon. Good luck on your GFF

i can't put it down. thanks brian germain. -
Is this legal, or could it be considered tax evasion? It seems like this would be a very efficient way to get some jumps in! I can't pack parachutes yet, but give me a shovel and i'll work my ass in the heat just for a few jump tickets anyone ever have experience doing work at a DZ that didn't involve being an experienced skydiver?

its hard to call "average" statistics useful if it depends on such a broad range of factors IMO. technically it IS average, but how to relate the average to ourselves is almost impossible..
