  1. While the quality and function of these rigs may be on par, it is important for potential owners to also consider the customer service they can expect when they inevitably need to order spare parts or get some work done.

    Some mfgrs are more responsive than others in that area which can make a big difference in how you feel about the rig on your back

    If one is not diligent about untwisting brake lines (removing the candy cane effect) does this cause link shrink to be even more dramatic?

    Meaning if you had two canopies, one that regularly had the brake lines untwisted and one that didn't and they did an equal number of jumps, if the properly untwisted canopy lost 6 inches in length due to shrinkage, how much would the improperly maintained brake line shrink?

  4. There is a group on Whidbey Island here in Washington state that is trying to get the US Navy to relocate an outlying field that F/A 18 Growlers use for carrier qualification.

    Compared to Longmont, it's actually legitimately loud (in excess of 130dbs).

    And even THEY haven't been able to make any headway in getting it shut down.

    The main reason being the Navy has been there long before they were, and it turns out just being pissed off doesn't move the needle with the federal government.

    Go figure.

    Does anyone know what the legal standard is to be a "recognized manufacturer"?

    Does it mean you have a business license and you have had sales that had tax collected?

    If so get a license (easy to do in states, don't know about UK) and sell your canopy to a friend, collect tax, file with the government, and include your tax records in your nuclear bomb binder.

    Seems strange that in order to jump a canopy the manufacturer has to be recognized, but you can't be a recognized manufacturer if you can't jump a new canopy. kafka indeed!

    This is a humbling sport. One thing I can tell you is that just getting through AFF and getting your A doesn't guarantee that you won't have a bad jump that will humble you and bring you down. You could have hundreds or thousands of jumps and make a mistake learning something new or just because you made a mistake.

    This is an opportunity for you to learn how to handle setbacks, of which this sport deals plenty in numerous ways. Gather yourself up, think hard about what you can do to move forward and improve, and put a plan into action to address it. As a student, this is what your instructors are there for, so you're in luck you don't have to figure that out all on your own. Seek them out and discuss this with them (preferably when you both have time to talk it out).

    Bring a case of beer at the end of the day and I bet your instructors will talk to you as long as you want (or until the beer runs out, so plan accordingly :D)

    But you do have to be mentally strong on your own!

    As another poster listed out, however, you have already demonstrated mental toughness so you have it in you. Flex that willpower and power through, I think you'll be surprised what you can overcome if you stick with it and keep your chin up!

    No reason it has to be an either/or type situation. you could always do a proper blog and update this thread with a brief summary and a link to the relevant post.

    Having this thread as a canonical resource would also have value, though I could also see the point of view that "my little project" has been finished and you're on to "my other little project"

    Either way I'd follow along to wherever you post new info as it has been a great read

    While plenty of women may also find the sweet spot tends to be deeper in the toggle stroke, if your pilot is MANgenta then you're good to go dude.

    I can tell you from a recent incident I had, from what the leg strap did to my actual leg (severe bruising and swelling) if anything else had been in between I don't think it would be functioning anymore.



    I'm afraid of the leg strap failing in the case of a nut-under as well. :)
