Maybe ask the question again when there is a tunnel big enough to do 100-ways in?
Until then, it cannot possibly come close.

Makes no difference. Can they swoop and be in the same piece of sky at break off? Are they altitude aware. Can they track like a mofo. And then the really big one, how much experience do they have with 100 other canopies in the air and flying under canopy safely and predictably.

The question however is a really good one as it is probably happening now and will only increase

I just got my A license and was doing my first 2 way without an instructor. . . .

I was in control of the exit and counted way too fast. Dive went well, we did 4 points and then tracked away from each other. Unfortunately for me, that meant tracking along the jump run.

If there were only two of you, why did the both of you not track perpendicular to jump run? Even if you're facing up and down jump run during the dive, that doesn't mean you need to turn 180 and track at the end of the dive. You could both turn 90 degrees instead.

This is not intended as a flame, but if the track was a normal 5 second track and 2 groups got close wasn't the problem was inadequate separation? We had something similar today, 2 flat groups on break track away from the centre and 1 from each group come uncomfortable close. The separation had been declared by jump master as 12 seconds, and the individual concerned on the second group (I was on the first but not the near miss) confirmed they the separation was correct. This individual is an experienced skydiver and very safety conscious. Our problem was (probably) caused by an unexpected increase in windspeed at the top resulting the 12 seconds separation of the previous jump not being adequate for this jump.

I did a couple of test rear flares before ground, and the stall point was reached very soon, and not with a lot of input into the rears. But also, think this was due to lack of practice, and the norm is to pull down on toggles, and not rears that are much shorter

Another good point. The control stroke on the rears is very short, even on a 'good' canopy. Something like 6 or 8 inches until the stall.

My crossfire 1 starts to stall after about 3 inches of rear riser input. As you said the key here is to always find out the stall characteristics at a safe altitude and not wait until 10ft off the deck.

  4. The problem you describe with not being able to get the air out is a genuine issue. You pack the rig with a long closing loop that is nice and tight, but the rig doesnt get jumped for 2 weeks. In those 2 weeks the pressure on the canopy forces the air out. The next time the rig gets jumped the closing loop is now loose and there is a risk of premature. If that premature happens in the aircraft with the door open there is a chance the resulting mess will pull the plane out of the air and kill everyone. Thats a worst case scenario but it is a real risk. I hope that helps

  5. I and a mate both fly Crossfire 1s of different sizes and ages, and they both take 1100ft from PC throw to fully inflated. Beautifully soft with the slider staying up for quite a while and very gentle inflation. I've got some new lines coming, it will be interesting to see if this changes.

  6. My bad. I was a BI instructing RAPS students at a well known UK DZ. Gear checks prior to emplaning are mandatory for all skydivers. Another skydiver gave me the once over and simply suggested I re-route my chest strap. I looked down and sure enough it wasn't done up properly. I think I am uber careful, I taught people, and yet I still made a mistake. Gear checks are mandatory in the UK prior to emplaning and we have to sign for those we have checked, 'tis a good thing I think :) Its not fool proof, but it takes next to no time and it helps.

    Parachutist Certificate Exam

    1. Describes your emergency procedures in the event of a malfunction?
    >look, locate, peel, pull, punch (i'm old and assuming this is A license stuff you're not supposed to think about it:) further on its more complicated than that but it would take a book to describe and I'm not experienced enough to write it :))
    2. Describe your canopy checks?
Big, rectangular, no malfunction per the pictures I have been shown. Is it controllable enough to be confident that landing it wont damage me.
    3. It is important to check your parachute equipment at what times?
Vague. In the UK we have a mandatory 3rd person check on flight line. Most people will check on the walk out and on the way to altitude, plus a cypress reserve pin check at least once a day at the start of jumping.
    4. You should check your deployment handles in what order?
Is order important? Having a regular check process is important and logically it would be hackey, cutaway, reserve which also reinforces the memory muscle and so the automatic response. But I don't always check in that order.
    5. Upon canopy deployment you are facing another canopy, the fastest way to turn your parachute out of the possible collision is?
Rear right riser if head on, appropriate riser if not (no point in right risering straight into the oncoming canopy)
    6. Your main canopy opens with line twists, your immediate response is?
    Check altitude
    7. Under canopy you find yourself at 3000ft down wind of the 2000ft or holding point. Your response should be?
Fly to the holding area, if you cant then another book is needed to answer the question
    8. What is your minimum decision altitude that you should carry out your emergency procedures if you are unable to control your main parachute?
At you hard deck, which depends on lots of things
    9. Your left hand flight path is going to take you over the centre of the PLA below500ft, your best response will be?
Way to many answers, eg its a left hand pattern and you've come in too early so skip the base leg and S off in final
    10. Correctly list the landing priority order?
Wings level, Flare, Avoid Hazards, Into wind
    11. Which correctly lists the deployment priority rules?
Is it big and rectangular? Is the airspace clear? Does it fly properly (flare). Where is and how do I get back to the PLA
    12. You have ended up having to land off the PLA, your new intended landing point is in a clear paddock but the surface is on the side of a hill. The wind direction is blowing directly up the hill. What should be your landing direction?
    Into wind
    13. You are coming in to dock on a formation. You should never?
Possible answers include shoot people, shit yourself, dump someone out, pull a reserve handle, clamp on someone and stay there till you both go in, etc. Stupid question but maybe directly related to some training material I don't have access to ;)
    14. Is it possible to land your canopy on half brakes?
    Yes
    15. On your final turn for landing you find you are traveling very fast. You look up and find you are landing down wind. Your reaction should be?
Flare at the normal height and PLF
    16. The PLA is surrounded by obstacles of trees and buildings, careful flight and concentration is required to land in the PLA. The obstacles that you can’t see on first glance may well include?
Telegraph/electricity poles and lines, lions tigers snakes and crocodiles, small but very deep holes leading to hell
    17. Your equipment is fitted with an AAD that is fitted to?
your equipment... this test is getting hard to take seriously. Your reserve closing loop if its a modern aad.

    18. You are in the second group to leave the aircraft. You look out the door and see the first group falling directly below the aircraft as opposed to falling away on about a 45ºangle from the door. This indicates to you that?
Wait until they are at 45º as the wind is honking at altitude. There are a number posts from yonks ago that suggest weakness in the 45º approach. Whats the current thinking?
    19. The correct exit order for different free fall disciplines is?
Simply, FF big to small, flat big to small, tandem, aff, ws. Read the Bryan Burke article for a better understandng
    20. You are flying a sport canopy in a load of 20 other canopies. Who has the right of way over you?
Low person has right of way, be careful around student and novices, you may have right of way but a 300ft canopy collision is not something to use to prove you right, assuming you like living.
    21. When is your skydive deemed to be over?
When the beer light goes on :) When the canopy is on the ground? When the debrief is done? When you quit skydiving for whatever reason?
    22. The life and performance of your skydiving equipment can be greatly reduced by ................................?

Immersing it in hydroflouric acid. Very stupid question

I'm a little drunk so please take everything with a pinch of salt ;)

******If you have your A License now, you should try to get a hold of gear! I weigh 150 and am happily flying a 170.

How exactly would that help if the chief instructor wouldn't let her use it?

    Depends on one's assumptions.
Instructors instruct & control students. She's apparently not a student any more. So he may be chief of nothing at all when it comes to power over her canopy choices. She can tell him to go stuff himself.

But in practice, you may be right, someone like that probably has other powers at the DZ and may have a say over what people get to jump, for better or for worse...

This is the CCI, and in the UK their word is law ;)

WL's are listed above, initation is 680' on my 107 and 800' on the 97.

For the 107 are you riding double fronts down to 680' and initiating the turn at 680'? The ground shadow suggests additional information - it look like you let up the riser at 180deg so do you finish the last 90deg on harness? And then it seems you are on rear risers as you complete the 270deg.

Thanks for the vids, I enjoyed them.

Noob tip: fly in 1/4 or 1/2 brakes first then imediatly go to front risers, this makes it easier to deform the parachute

Is true but defeats the objective of trying achieve forward movement over the ground into strong winds. A pull on the brakes will slow the canopy in the air and so increase the backward speed over the ground. The subsequent pull on the front risers while it will cause the canopy to speed up a little if she can deflect it, will not make the ground lost by applying the brakes. I am only talking here about the student canopy loaded at 0.65, other canopies have different characteristics.

"I got a deal on a car, and wonder if it is a nice deal.

The full car is from 2001 and got ~200 miles.
The full car has a service history and the last service was 3 months ago.

The seller wants $36000 for the full car.

It sounds like a good deal for me, but since it is my first buy, i would be sure to not say yes to a bad deal. "

Kinda depends what the car is and what options are fitted. It's probably the same for skydiving gear...

  12. I'm about to order a pair of prescription Wiley X goggles. I've gone for these even though they are stupidly expensive because I have a very narrow face and so my options are often very limited. But I will also be wearing an open face as I will have a camera and the DZ I jump requires a cutaway system on the helmet. I haven't spoken tothe CCI about Brians video proposal for cut aways on full face helmets, but that requires a manual action to actally remove the helmet so may not be acceptable where I jump.

  13. Hey there

*I think* the point is that if you try to learn too much from this site you may be at risk. A 1st time AFF student should look up and if the parachute isn't big & square then cut it away and get the reserve out. No thinking, just as automatic as it can be taught. Later on after x hundred jumps and y cut aways you may start to learn variations on that. But if you have a malfunction on your first jump (ridiculously unlikely but it does happen) there is a risk you will be trying to remember what x said about dealing with that malfunction in a thread here rather than chopping the parachute and getting the reserve out *at a safe height*.

Its an interesting sport where knowledge is king, but it needs to be proportionate in some cases to experience to be safe.

    Stay safe, have fun

  14. I'm getting a lot of "Digital signature does not match" when trying to upload results. This has only happened in the last couple of weeks. Anyone else having these problems? I have 2 comps with folding as a background service. Cheers

  15. 2 chops in 700.

1st @ 497 - racer, boc, xfire 119. Deployed and after 5 secs was still face to earth, cut away and deployed reserve. Learned to look over shoulder if nothing after a couple of seconds to clear pc in burble (don;t know if this is what this situation was, but I didn't try).

2nd @ 650ish - pc got caught in lines before line stretch. An interesting ride! Fought it from 5000ft to 2000ft and chopped to reserve.
