Obama's boys are completely out of control...

    Quote

The Democrats, worried about higher gas prices, want to set up a board that would apply a "windfall profit tax" as high as 100 percent on the sale of oil and gas, according to their legislation. The bill provides no specific guidance for how the board would determine what constitutes a reasonable profit.

What are they going to do when they realize just how low the returns actually are? Watch them simply quote absolute numbers "- look they made $20B dollars!!! That's obscene!!!"

This is just tghe first step in controling prices in all business.

    >there is nothing about paying welfare and all men are created equal eliminates slavery.

    Welfare is mentioned TWICE:

"We the People of the United States . . . promote the general Welfare"

"Congress shall have power to lay and collect Taxes . . and provide for the . . general Welfare of the United States;"

And returning escaped slaves is mentioned specifically:

"No Person held to Service or Labour in one State, under the Laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in Consequence of any Law or Regulation therein, be discharged from such Service or Labour, But shall be delivered up on Claim of the Party to whom such Service or Labour may be due."

In other words, you can't free slaves if they escape.

So be careful what you ask for; you might get it, and you'd likely be very unhappy.

promoting the general welfare and paying welfare to dead beats are 2 completely different things. nice try though. I figured someone with your eduacation would have read and understood the difference. the words all men are created equal means All men not just white men and the amendment to free the slaves was just clarifing those words.

Because that's about .0001% of our budget. Feels good, does nothing. Might as well cut funding for government religious observances.

promoting general welfare is not the same as pay money to people that are to lazy to work. nice try though

Sounds good to me, lets start cutting the least important items and keep going until the budget is balanced.

Problem is everyone has their own ideas about what's important and what isn't.

we could start figuring that out by reading the constitution and eliminating what is not listed there in.

    Oh, that's brilliant!

Got news for you: "welfare" is mentioned twice in the US Constitution by name. Guess that stays!

So eliminate the Air Force, the interstate highways, veteran's benefits, the CDC, the FCC and the FAA? But keep welfare and slavery?

the super rich certainly need to pay more tax...

I think you need to pay more tax, what is your fair share? what is the fair share of everyone making less than 50k? why are those people's "fair share" never talked about. when you pay as many total $s as the rich do then you can speak about fair share. until you pay the total $ amount they pay you just look whiny kid trying to mooch off of others.

Did he just say $374,327 was "not very much."
Yeah that's dumb and stuff and he said it.

I could do a much better job for $300k!
Hell I'll even bring my own lunch!

And yeah sadly I only make $100k and have an MBA and a condo so....my taxes will always be in the high 20's low 30's

But thats because god hates me

You have an MBA and don't know how to offset your taxes with a small start-up company that will offset your taxes for awhile (adjusted gross income), help you build it into making more than your current salary and perhaps someday, 1) live off the 15% capital gains and 2) have built an organization in which you are a commodity on the speaking circuit?

    Are you a Phoenix?

It's amazing, don't you think, that despite the big tax advantages already given to small businesses, they are, according to the IRS, also the biggest tax cheats.

According to the IRS - everyone is a tax cheat for avoiding taxes... http://www.alternet.org/newsandviews/article/551168/10_of_the_biggest_corporate_tax_cheats_in_america/

Aren't most corporations just small businesses run by one or a couple people?

Which is equivalent to saying "maybe people should start using the tax code to their advantage instead of whining and crying that taxes are too high."

I don't like paying taxes but I know it is needed, I know I don't pay as much as the rich but I still pay and I am glad the rich pay, but I am tired of seeing so many pay nothing and then complain the rich don't pay enough. This class warfare created by the left is discusting and is causing harm to our country. The politicians spend to much and the lower income people don't pay enough.

    >what will of the people are you talking about?

When the government shuts down and people lose schools, garbage collection, passport services, road maintenance etc then they'll get upset. When they can't pay the TSA and have to start shutting down airports they'll get even more upset. And they will all demand that SOMEONE DO SOMETHING! And the person who promises to do something will win the next election.

People all say they want the government to spend less. But if the choice is to have the government spend less or be able to send their kids to school, or visit Aunt Bettie, they'll go with the extra spending almost every time.

Mike, can you refute that the average tax savings of the 1% exceeded the average income of the 99%? If not, why isn't that relevant?

I'm not saying it is (average, without median, can be very misleading). But it'd be nice to hear.

I hope my effective tax rate will be 15% one day!

The dust hasn't settled, so to speak, but on the back of the envelope my "effective" (that's kind of a crap term, but whatever) 2011 federal tax rate will be around 9.5%. To be fair you can throw in FICA and it would be around 15%...

    ...better string me up.

Why, are you worth over $220M and only paying 9.5%

you could easily be WORTH 1 trillion and not pay a dime

    .

    Indeed.

That's because the current rules are biased in favor of the wealthy, who have bought and paid for the folks who write the rules. The rules need to be changed.

So, if this person does not make a dime for a year. his wealth should be taxed in kallend world?

If a trillionaire doesn't make a dime in a year, they need a new financial advisor.

Choosing what to tax is fairly arbitrary. Why is wealth given preferential treatment over earned income? Because the wealthy paid for the laws.

taxing wealth would be double dipping since it was taxed when earned.

Silly argument. (1) Money isn't taxed, people are. (2) Not all wealth was earned in the first place. (3) How does your claim not also apply to sales taxes, property taxes, etc?

People are taxed on the money they earn, in order to be wealthy someone had to earn the money that created the wealth, at that point they paid taxes on that money. Maybe you don't agree with the amount they paid in taxes, but the taxes got paid. Taxing someone for being wealthy is only retaxing the money already taxed.

What makes you think that states would do a better job? Right now we have state officials who think that creationism is better taught than evolution. What mkaes a basic education? Is it readin', writin' and 'rithmetic? If so, where do computers enter into it?

I think it's up to the feds to set some minimal standards, and it's up to the states to try to do better than those standards.

One problem is that currently there are populations who aren't meeting those standards, and the feds have states spending so much money to catch up the last-runners that they don't have as much to advance. But just leaving the farthest behind out of the mix entirely (which is certainly cheapest, and most "efficient") probably isn't the best answer. If nothing else, people will see poor performance in their friends and relatives as a fluke, and poor performance in groups that they don't identify with as a characteristic.

    Wendy P.

I think they should close the department of education and start a SMALL " department of minimals standards for education", Get rid of unions in any government jobs, and remove all religous and social teachings from the classroom. this would be a good start to fix the education system. Teachers need to teach not sit on their asses and collect a paycheck or social engineer our kids.

I also applied to an all black school, and got my only rejection letter....and here i was told getting a 33 on the ACTs would get me into any school i wanted>:(

And have probably been called a racist. most racist people are the ones calling it.

Not a single person was injured by a Volt, instead they had one that caught on fire weeks after a crash test in the test course. Where did you get that people were getting injured by their cars?

The problem is that if it happens while driving it takes time to stop the car and get out. I know nobody has been hurt yet but it will happen.

More volts sold? did you miss the part about GM buying them back because people are scared they might become a well done steak? the buy back will raise the cost per car.

That problem was a bit overstated, but they made the offer to anyone that was not comfortable with it. You can't build a car brand behaving otherwise. Nevertheless, that issue is resolvable, and entirely different car models can still make use of these batteries.

Problem solved? last weak they were barbequing customers and this week the problem is fixed?

"Each Chevy Volt sold thus far" It's nice when they state how they are being deceptive right up front.

so far it seems like everyone has glossed over your point. When you go out to the DZ for the first weekend with your new $5000 rig, each jump thus far costs you $500 (presuming 5 jump per day)! WOW!

that battery plant should be running for 10+ years, unless it fails completely. Next year twice as many Volts will have been sold, halving the number to 125k. Still big enough to run the same story with the clause "sold thus far" but it will get hard to do by year 4.

    >we would be fools th think we can change the natural cycle of the planet.

Didn't you just claim that having no people to put out forest fires would cause a "huge increase in emissions and particles in the air causing global cooling?"

Your posts become less effective when you contradict yourself by the end of them.

go back a reread I did not contradict myself

  21. Quote

    >If there were no humans on earth, what change would be going on right now?

It would be very safe to say that we'd have much less CO2 in the air. And it's also pretty safe to say that the total greenhouse effect would be reduced by about 2 watts/square meter, resulting in less heat retained.

As to what specific result that would have on weather - that's harder to say. It's almost certain that it would be cooler, although how much cooler and what other effects you'd see are harder to determine accurately.

If there was no people no one would put out forest fires causing a huge increase in emissions and particles in the air causing global cooling then it would switch to global warming when the particles feel to earth and the co2 took over. or is it the path the earth takes around the sun that affects our climate during warming and cooling cycles? The earth has had many cycles without man's influence and will continue to have cycles with us here. we would be fools th think we can change the natural cycle of the planet.

Yes. As I understand it, at one time every paper dollar had a little piece of Gold in a vault backing it, giving it inherent value. Now that there is so much more paper money than there is Gold, putting us back on the Gold Standard is ludicrous and would serve to simply vaporize the value of the Dollar.

Anyone who thinks eliminating the EPA and relying on private lawsuits to stop major polluters would be anything other than an ecological disaster is completely out of touch with reality.

Yes. Lawsuits, other than those for injunctive relief, are a curative, not a preventative. Even ones for injunctive relief require at least some damage.

In a EPA-free world, there would always be some damage to the environment, as it would be a requisite to these panacea-like (In RP's mind) lawsuits. And to be honest, law is not about who's right, it is about who has the better attorney. Who has more cash to hire a better attorney--Exxon/BP or some podunk community wherein the kids are being born without limbs because of toxic pollution?

That he was a USAF doctor is not reason to be a foreign policy/defence guru--that's a noncombatant officer who practices medicine, nothing war-related... As an OB/GYN, the closest he likely got to combat was a obnoxious Officer's wife giving birth.

RP is a Putz who needs to go back to being an OB/GYN.

I don't think eliminating the EPA is good but it should be made alot smaller and only be able to recommend laws for congress to pass.
