******Looks like Galena, Alaska is underwater right now because there's so much ice on the Yukon River that the ice dammed it up and is forming a lake behind it.

    Hopefully it warms up soon.

    So whats your point?

If you read what I quoted, lawrocket expressed hope that Alaska warmed up soon. I was simply relaying that it has.

******Two points, if rape and sexual assault on females is decreasing and there is only a 5% probability of pregnancy, earlier cite, why are Republicans being stalked for saying weird comments?

Because Republicans want to pass laws governing reproductive systems that they clearly don't have the slightest understanding of.

    Dave

I wouldn't lay that just on Republicans. Man and woman create a human child. To kill that child for convenience is evil. Politics just seems to be the only avenue to combat that evil.

So you believe that termination of a rape-conceived pregnancy is killing a child for convenience? I'd argue that a) it's not killing a child unless we're talking late term and b) it's not just for convenience.

But, we both know that this country is on the path of evil and retribution is coming. Well, I am aware of it. You may not be.

I have it on good authority that you readily accept things on faith despite a complete and total lack of evidence, so you'll have to pardon my misgivings on the basis of your credulity.

It opens up the door for governmental and insurance funding of obesity treatmentsn from bariatric surgeries to nutritional counseling to....

I wonder if insurance will pay for a personal trainer if I gain 50 pounds?

Of course they'd do this in the interest of reducing overall costs to the system. Hopefully treatment of obesity is cheaper than treatment of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and the various increased cancer risks.

  6. I do subcontract work for the government. In the last 20 months, our project has seen budget cuts of >50% and has laid off approximately 70% of staff. Those of us who remain are enjoying sequestration this year. In the grand scheme of things, it's probably inconsequential, but it's had a big impact on our local economy, and I doubt this is a unique situation.

I'm sorry I didn't look back far enough to see your thread. What do I suggest? That we stop talking about what Political Party this person belongs to and realize that its just another person that made an ignorant remark regarding rape as so many have. Then concentrate our efforts NOT on the Politics but on getting women the help they need and trying to help stop this disgusting act.

Are you honestly arguing that politics should not be discussed in Speaker's Corner?

Sorry, but like I said earlier it isn't about a political party, its just one more clueless person period!!! Why not focus on the topic of RAPE and how to get these women help instead of the politics. But, then people would have to really care, and when it comes down to it people would rather trash talk politics then find solutions. My point has been proven over and over again in this thread.

This is Speaker's Corner. Idiotic politicians are kind of the flavor du jour, every day, by design. If you want to talk about rape victims, maybe start a thread about that instead of trying to hijack a thread about idiotic politicians? Just a thought.

Huh? Chris Christie hasn't been destroyed. A few fat jokes, but hardly different than the ones he makes himself. It may just be a New York (area) thing, but still looks like a lot of people would like to see him run.

The question is whether Christie can win the nomination in an environment where tea party proponents abhor anything remotely resembling moderation. If the Republicans nominate him, he'll have a damn good chance against any Democrat, and will probably win unless the Dem's follow suit and nominate someone moderate themselves. The extreme polarization of American politics is nearing the end of its useful life. Barring a significant third party candidate, I suspect the winner of the next Presidential election will be the more moderate of the two "real" candidates.

My personal experience was one of moving between methods along with some tunnel time. What worked for me was having the same gifted instructor who used the various methods to teach specific skills. I feel that my learning was enhanced by a building block approach which included clear objectives and coaching. It definitely is not a one size fits all approach and does require a gifted Instructor who uses techniques the way a good chef uses ingredients. I just hope I don't end up a half baked Skydiver.

Yeah, that's a fun way to do things when you have all the ratings and a good student. It isn't without risks though, as it can be tempting to get a bit off script, and diligence is required to make sure no learning objectives are lost in the shuffle. Also, it works best when the student sticks with one instructor, or a set of similarly-minded instructors who can easily communicate with each other. Otherwise, it can be difficult for a subsequent instructor to pick up where his predecessors left off. The ISP helps a lot in this regard, by allowing some standardization of non-standard progressions. Without it, explaining such a "dynamic" series of jumps to a more rigid instructor when a student goes south to finish their training in the off-season is annoying.

  11. I've taught pure IAD and pure AFF, and also tandem & iad progressions to single JM AFF. I'm cool with the concept of 1 working tandem > IAD thru PRCPs > AFF to solo status, and could easily be convinced to ditch the tandem jump and just go IAD > AFF (although I do believe there's some value in a *working* tandem). These progression methods are far and away my preferred method of instruction.

That said, going back and forth between the programs is a bit fuzzier in the real world than it is on paper. If you have a student who has done a few IAD PRCPs and a couple single JM AFF jumps, at what point would you put him back in the IAD world? Clear and pull? 10 second delay? And what sense is there in program that says if we keep you in AFF, you must do three more jumps with an AFF instructor, but if we switch you to IAD, you can solo freefall right now? If we back them up a level to make them demonstrate progressively longer freefalls, we're just milking them for money and making the student process last longer than it should.

For this reason, I haven't ever transitioned a student on AFF back to the IAD realm except to let them knock out their C&P on a low altitude day.

Edit: I take that back. I have (rarely) had students in AFF phase do an IAD style jump, but not so much for "progression" purposes as to simply deal with a student-specific issue, e.g. canopy control sucking and weather not conducive to AFF, or freefall sucking (multiple failures) indicative of a good candidate for the "slower" progression of IAD or S/L style methods.

So your point is that he has been correct for the last decade or so. I agree with you. It did take several years for Einstein to be vindicated. In a few days NOAA will come out, and confirm that current global temps continue to remain flat. Invalidating all co2based AGW climate models.

I take it you didn't bother to read the rebuttal I linked (hosted by university of waterloo, where Lu works), despite the fact that I've spent hours considering the paper you posted. If you're not willing to consider alternate positions in a debate, frankly, you should probably just quietly take your seat. That's how these things work. Alternately, you could just post the link in ALL CAPS while covering your ears. :D

Your guy is wrong. He uses only surface data, when in fact the globe is mostly water. He suggests that the forcings of CFCs are not well understood when we've been measuring them for decades (a fact he doesn't mention). He fails to explain the observed losses of reflected energy in the CO2 and methane absorptive wavelengths, and he relies on a sketchy correlation without any good explanation of causation. His findings have been strongly rebutted and rather than adjust them to quell criticism, he just keeps saying the same thing.

  13. Very glad my daughter finished her 10 month stay in Turkey in August. She's been in Taiwan since November and is coming home in less than 2 months...hopefully there won't be another clash between the Taiwanese and China before then. 1 year in Wyoming followed by 2 years Peace Corp, who I hope (but doubt) will send her somewhere peaceful.

"brenthutch"]Kallend have you had a chance to review the peer reviewed study published in the International Journal of Modern Physics? Or is it invalidated because it was I who brought it to your attention?

FYI - It turns out Lu has been making different version of the same argument since 2001 and published largely similar papers in 2009 and 2010. He's unlikely to get much more attention from the academic and research community unless they feel compelled to respond to the way the climate change skeptics have latched on to this recent paper.

If you'd like to see his 2010 paper entitled "Cosmic-ray-driven electron-induced reactions of halogenated molecules adsorbed on ice surfaces: implications for atmospheric ozone depletion and global climate change" rebutted, see "Do cosmic-ray-driven electron-induced reactions impact stratospheric ozone depletion and global climate change?"

If you'd prefer to read more of his work, any of the following should do.

Lu, Q.B., 2010a. Cosmic-ray-driven electron-induced reactions of halogenated molecules adsorbed on ice surfaces: implications for atmospheric ozone depletion and global climate change. Phys. Rep. 487, 141e167.

Lu, Q.B., 2010b. What is the major culprit for global warming: CFCs or CO2? J. Cosmology 8, 1846e1862.

    >>>>Don't ask, don't tell repealed.
How is that an additional freedom?
If you didn't ask, and no one told, what is the repeal doing to further liberty?

People are now free to ask, and tell, and still join the military.

Again, how is that an expansion of liberty? Are you arguing that it is a good thing for our women to be able to die on the battlefield now?

Women who wish to participate in combat now have the freedom to do so.

Magazines of what size? I can still buy 30 round magazines for my AR, and I'm unaware of any restrictions on larger capacities.

    I should have specified . . . yes, Federal.

It seems that people can now donate unlimited funds toward electing their candidate of choice. While I disagree with the concept of being able to buy an election, I still have to acknowledge its an increase in freedom, or at least less of a restriction thereof.

Senior officials are still using sock puppets to avoid transparency.

I suppose that's one way of looking at it.

Another would be to say it makes sense to have more than one email address; one for dealing with broad public issues and another for dealing with higher level officials on issues of a more immediate nature. It's why when you have to speak to your boss, some times you need to do it in a different room than the office bullpen. The "idea" you're suggesting might not be for public consumption yet. The topic you're dealing with needs to be kept under wraps for the moment because otherwise it might jeopardize something. Or, are you suggesting that virtually every word communicated between everybody in government be immediately published in the news?

    That's a ridiculous standard.

The email addresses are still owned by the government. They can still be FOIAed. I don't agree with the amount of money being charged to comply with the FOIA, but that's a separate issue.

That's all well and good, but do they really have to give their alternate email personas awards?

"The new records show the Windsor account was awarded certificates showing he has 'satisfactorily competed the online email records management training'; took the 2010 'No FEAR Act Training Module'; and a completed a 'Cybersecurity awareness training' course in 2011, where he scored 83 percent.

Windsor was also awarded the 'scholar of ethical behavior' each year from 2010 through 2012. The only training Ms. Jackson appears to have done under her own name was for cybersecurity awareness in 2010."

    Clicky

That seems like a great use of an alternate email account...routine day-to-day operations like training being kept separate from the potential tidal wave of email that is always possible with the widely published email address of a high ranking official.
