  1. >>To ban people from simply saying, "Merry Christmas" to one another is completely irrational.

No one is attempting to ban that. Anyone who works for the school can wish anyone else any type of greeting that they want- on their own time. When on the school's time, they are expected to behave as a state employee, and part of that is not endorsing any religion over another. Seems reasonable to me (and the writers of the bill of rights).

I propose a simple test to see if a particular greeting violates the first amendment when given by a public (or authority) figure. Just replace the holiday in question with another holiday that is outside of your religion and see what kind of response you get. If it makes the average person raise an eyebrow, then it probably doesn't belong. Teacher's shouldn't be wishing students a Merry Christmas anymore than they should be wishing them a Happy Ramadan. Try that one in a public school and see what happens!!

  2. Kinda interesting how there is such a variation in what the different branches find acceptable. For my height, the army, navy or air force would take me at a max of 212, 221, or 225 lbs. However, the marines would still take me at 261. FWIW, I'm within the range for all branches but I'm not in the military.

Here is a tip, if you pack quicker then you decrease the chance it has to fill up with air

    Now There's some valuable Advice>:(

Ya, actually it is. I don't read on here very often anymore, but I'm wondering what petejones did to make everyone on here hate him?

  4. Assuming that this bank takes part in the FDIC, does that mean they have any obligation to uphold the first amendment? Hell, if they want to start their own bank on their own land... they can call if the First Bank of Jesus for all that this atheist cares. It seems too me that if they want federal deposit insurance, then they need to play by federal rules (the constitution).

  5. Most people seem to think anyone making noticably more than them is rich:S.

I would probably rate it as a factor times the average income for your city. Here in Norfolk, the average income is only around $42,000. (city-data.com). You could live a VERY nice life sytle here for 5X that, or about $210,000. I would consider you rich if you made 10X the average income.

So yes, if you're in sub-saharan (sp?) Africa, you might be rich if you have $10,000/ year.

  6. The SP-888 is different than the Wichard hardware. The SP-888 is shown in the 4th pic down in the link that I previously posted. You can do a search to find more about the Wichard hardware, I don't have any first hand experience. I don't know what the DJ-SSA is.

  7. I should add that my harness is articulated, and it will probably cost more if yours in non-articulated. The actual straps will need to be replaced as well after they pick the stiching out to remove/ replace the hardware. Also, don't forget you'll have to pay for a complete reassembly and not just a repack to get your rig back up. Total cost including shipping both ways and additional rigging was closer to $300>:(

  8. Wow, exact same problem that I had on my 2004 Mirage G3 that I bought used. Do you have the cadmium hardware or stainless? Mine was cadmium buckles. I was always tightening up the straps on jump run and it was really annoying.

I sent it back a few weeks ago and had the buckles replaced with the SP-888 "french style" 2 piece buckles and that completely solved the problem. Cost was $214 for everything but shipping, so it came to about $235 after shipping. They had an amazing turn around time, called me the morning that it arrived at their factory, did the work in a couple hours and had it back out the door that afternoon. You might not even miss a weekend if you are lucky.

I thought it was pretty shitty that the hardware was defective and I was totally prepared to call and bitch that they fix it for free, but once I heard how quick they were willing to do it, I decided to relent. And not being the original owner on a new rig, I doubt they would have given in. If it happend on a brand new rig, ya I'd be pissed and demand they fix it for free.

My master rigger said he could do it but it wouldn't have been any cheaper and I wanted factory work so that I might have more recourse if it was still slipping, which it is not.

So, just to be clear: I had the buckles shown in the top and 2nd pic here: http://www.miragesys.com/products/?loc=detail&id=2&iid=1237 and I replaced it with the 4th pic down and now it does not slip.

Never again will I own a rig with anything other than stainless SP-888 leg strap buckles:)

  9. >>1. Didn't they give the DZO a list and give him time to fix the problems the first time?
    Yes, I believe so.

    >>2. Didn't Jim tell the AA the problems (except the door) were fixed?
    Yes, I believe so.

    >>3. Were or were not all of the problems (but the door) fixed?
Yes. But then they came thru and did another inspection while he was not there. Items that were previously OK'ed were then said to be inadequate. Same inspector. The eviction notice mentioned that even if the violations were fixed, the eviction would still stand. Not a single other building on airport property (and there are several other hangers) were inspected either time.

Clearly, this is not really about fire code violations. I'd expect you might hear some more details about what the AA is doing to kick us out after Dec. 31st when it actually happens. For now, everyone is pretty much holding their cards fairly tight and focusing on the positive in hope that we can change their minds.

  10. We've got a river near my DZ. If I had a line over on my reserve, and cutting the line is unsuccessful for whatever reason... thats where I'm taking it. Of course, I would have little say in the matter because I would be spinning, so I would just have to hope that jump run that day took me over the river. Yes- I realize how unlikely it would be to accomplish this, but you never give up!

  11. I've done about 100 tandems now, just enough to know that I like doing them and I want to do it for a long time. I'm only 24 so I could potentially have a long tandem career in front of me. I started doing the math on the economics of owning my own tandem system and I quickly stopped because the payback time is so long.

My DZ would pay an extra $20/ jump (on top of regular pay); but that's untaxed contractor pay, so figure on netting an extra $15/ jump. I did enough math to figure that if I do 250 jumps/ year (easy since I did my first 100 in 5 months), replace lines, drogue and risers every 500 jumps, retire the main after 1500 jumps, and keep the whole thing for 12- 15 years- then my per jump equipment cost is $7-9 per jump. I did not assume a salvage value at the end of its life.

So now I'm done to making only about $6- $8 more per jump over the life of the system:S. Add in the fact that I don't have $15,000 laying around to purchase it with cash, and I would have to go out and finance it... and I'm quickly making almost no money. Owning a tandem rig in my position would be bad decision.

  12. I give it until close of business today until some dumb ass young earth creationist says something along the lines of "God just put it there to test our faith":S

Then I give it about two weeks until someone finds a way to twist a bible verse into explaining this so they can say God knew it all along.

  13. I've got an HTC Evo with 4G from Sprint. I don't live in an area that has it yet, but I did give it a pretty good run thru when I was in the Chicago Midway airport. It was very fast, it loaded a full webpage seemingly as quick as my home connection. Browsing the web was great, and every page and videos loaded very quickly.

I don't know how it would behave if you made it into a hotspot to share the connection, but I imagine it wold be a little slower but still good. High speed internet at home is only like $30/ month here so to me its would not be worth routing my laptops internet thru the phone for that small savings. And of course it sucks batteries while 4G is running.

    Just my thoughts.

  14. Yup, and that nice shiny FBO they built a couple years ago is a direct result of all the money we spent on fuel there. Now that they have the nice building, and new airport managers/ authority is in charge... screw us!!! Jim's message on the facebook discussion post is right- until the attititude of the airport authority changes, its looking pretty bad for us[:/]
