What is a good still air glide ratio for BASE jump with 1800' of usable altitude?

    Kris.

I'd say 1400' is impressive. The gear doesn't make the flight, but it certainly helps. Yet, I've seen people "in the zone" track just as well without.
Here's a GPS plot from last year, using tracking gear VKB style. Exit at 970m, pull around 270m.

  2. VKB did some jumps in Kyrghiztan a couple of years ago. That would be the outskirts of Himalaya...
Anyway, jumping was no problem. But if anybody asked why we where there, explaining about basejumping was definitely a problem.

Also in Superterminal there is a one minute plus wingsuit flight. The wings look a bit different on the video, can you post details etc.?

    Kris.

The WS jumps in Superterminal are all made with the old GTIs...
A minute, huh? With his new suit, Andreas will do it in 45 sec :)

  4. It's true, we only print PAL. Some have asked for NTSC in particular, and have been informed. I'm not sure about the possibilities to transcode a PAL DVD to NTSC. If someone knows about this, please tell me (us). Over here all DVD players play both formats as far as I know. But I understand this might be a problem with some players "over there". Anyway, a PC will play anything, but I understand this is not what your looking forward to when getting the DVD.
There will probably not be printed any NTSC copies, so transcoding from PAL/using a zonefree player/using a PC, are the only options.

in one of the DVD extras it looks like there is a testing shop where somebody is developing tracking suits... is there a link to more info on those suits?

No, not yet anyway. This is an ongoing research project, but not with a commercial product launched in the immediate future (maybe never...) Mostly it's done for our own flying pleasure, and your viewing pleasure;)

  5. It's the intro to the Herbaliser tune "The hard stuff" (Something wicked this way comes), a sample from an old american inti weed propaganda movie:
"They're the comming thing. Nice kids. No trouble to anyone. Just a harmless evening smoking pot. And eachone is sure he won't get hooked. They think there's still a future. But in a year, half of them will be on the hard stuff. The next year three out of every ten will be dead."

  6. Hi

As many have pointed out, the iflyucanhardlymoveforward-paypalaccount is not up and running for the time being. This is the one to use:

    [email protected]

We have now printed more DVDs, and there are enough to go around (for a while, anyway). If you are interested in and original copy, just PM me. We're charging 30$ for them, including shipping anywhere in the world.

  7. Messages seemed to drown a bit in the other thread, so I thought I'd put this in a new one.

If you are interested in getting your own original version of VKB's Superterminal PM me for details. We have a limited edition ready for delivery.

  8. Hi,

as you probably have understood, we don't mind copying the dvd to friends. but we would like to keep the whole thing in one piece as long as possible, and also keep the quality. so please don't put parts of the dvd (the main movie) on skydivingmovies or similar websites... we can do this ourselves..

for those of you who would like to get an original sample PM me or mail Andreas "shemale" Barkhall ([email protected]).

We are printing more dvds, so there will be enough (at least for a while)

    peace out...

  9. Hi,
here is the distance/time diagram. i also attached another one from a different jump. this is without GPS-loss, so it might be better for some parts. tracking gear has been used...

That's f*cking impressive. Holding 1.5-1.9 glide ratio for 10 seconds is not just a momentary "flare". Care to explain body position and other details?

Which GPS was used to record at 0.1s intervals?

    Yuri

    Hi,

by "flare" i mean increasing lift and drag at the same time, resulting in increased glide ratio while reducing absolute velocity. during this particular flight the idea was to build speed with a relatively long steep dive. that way i would have excess speed which would give increased range. you can see from the speed diagrams that from13-14 sec the (absolute) speed is decreasing continuously till pulltime. this is due to the "flare". i guess i would have stalled the track pretty soon if the flight was continued a couple of more seconds.

the GPS used is an expensive unit used for geographical surveys. it has a capacity of recording at 20 hz. we just borrow it:P

ps. the film "superterminal" (known by the working title "new standards") will have a limited release hopefully within a couple of weeks.

  11. Hi!

We recorded a flight during heli-boogie at kjaerag with a glideratio of 27 degrees. However this was at max flare, not the average angle. That was around 40. The angle and speed diagrams are attached. A part of the flight is missing due to loss of GPS contact.

And yes, the outfits are homemade.

Douggie, are you the one who took an early swim from Smell this summer? When are you coming to the (real) big walls?

There is no possible way a first jump off a bigwall is safer than a first PCA of the Perrine.

    To put this into perspective;

imagine a reasonably good looking span with a wide soft landing i.e. water or snow, 60-80 meters high. (shouldn't be to hard..) Throw in a lifevest and a boat, and I put my money on any wuffo surviving a pca'd jump. He could be asleep and i would still go for the bet. Hell, if drowning is not a possibility, he could be handcuffed and sedated and i'm pretty sure I'd get my money back after a couple of rounds. (as long as the drugs are handled by pros...B|)

Now, imagine a cuffed, sedated wuffo off of a bigwall...

The notion that big walls are safer only apply to big wall jumpers who are trackmasters.

    I'm deeply hurt...:P
