But for a person who is relatively naive, but who has good intentions, philosophically it's not that big of a deal I guess, because it's the criminal (the one who STOLE the gun, not the one who left it in such an easily-stealable place) who is responsible for what he does with it.

Too bad that it was so easy to snag one out of someone's seat. Otherwise, the laws we have in place would have prevented this criminal from owning a gun legally.

You can't get medical care, other than emergency which you have to eventually pay for unless you have money,

but for very little money you can purchase health insurance, which will get you medical care just about anywhere. For people who are truly incapable of working, there are social programs in place that help. Most of the people who "can't afford" health insurance still find a way to afford many of the luxuries that they WANT to afford.

But too many people don't WANT to spend their money on something as so emotionally unfulfilling as health insurance. It's much easier to ask those of us who choose to pay our own way to pay theirs too. I suppose if selling pelts does it for you, then have at it. It'd be more admirable than sitting on your duff complaining about what's not being given to you at someone else's expense. There are other ways to earn a living, though, that might not seem so icky to you.

Well, at least this time we're getting evacuees into Arkansas *before* the storm. And that's good.

OF COURSE NOT!!! I would never ask another person to do anything he/she didn't want to do. BUT I'd like to be given the same consideration. I already work plenty long hours (how's that for the King's English), and pay $2500/month for health insurance for me, my son, and my employees. I'd like to not alter my lifestyle further in order to pay for OTHER people's health insurance who don't see fit to get up and earn it for themselves.

It'd be easy to earn enough money for health insurance just by dedicating the time spent postwhoring to earning a few extra dollars. A novel concept for sure, but it could probably be done without giving up the internet or cell phone (though dropping those would probably pay the bill without getting an extra job).

I think the liklihood of being raped and murdered is lower than that of being raped and NOT being murdered. Personally, if I had to be raped, I'd rather not be killed. If I thought my fighting would get me killed too, I'd not fight and get on with my life.

I have so many thoughts about this. On one hand, it's true that women should be able and prepared to defend ourselves. Can't imagine that anyone would disagree with that.

But being violently attacked, even if you know it can happen, can also catch a person off guard. Nobody really EXPECTS it to happen. Then when the realization hits that it IS happening, sometimes violence is so much MORE violent than you'd ever dream would happen.

Being faced with choosing, potentially, between being raped or killed....or knowing that there's nowhere to go and fighting might leave you worse off...or any number of scenarios....might leave a woman choosing not to fight, or maybe not being able to fight in any effective way because she's been beaten up or physically harmed in some other way.

Yeah, women should be able to defend ourselves. BUT I'd hope that if she doesn't, for one reason or another, some of you guys would give her a break and let up on the lectures about what she should have done, or "how could she not have done...."

May seem like a no-brainer in front of your computer screen, but it just may not be that simple.

It's real easy to say that's what you'd do if you've never been in the situation. But say you've been drinking a bit, you're in a secluded place, and the rapist beats the shit out of you, then cuts you before he rapes you. Not so cut and dry.

...which is probably the better lesson. Be mindful of the situations you put yourself into. Maybe I'm wrong, but I bet there are times when it's better to not fight back. Either way, I wouldn't fault a woman in that situation for whatever she chose to do. It's her ass she has to save. BUT it's probably better to not feel too safe walking some places alone, especially after dark.
