Liverpool may be using Timo Werner smokescreen as Alisson transfer proves There have been mixed reports about Liverpool's supposed interest in Timo Werner this summer. One minute they're leading the race, the next they're not interested. Liverpool will have the chance to sign Timo Werner this summer and the player wants Anfield. The question is, do they really want him? In recent weeks it seemed like all signs point towards Merseyside for Werner, who is set to make a big call at the end of the season. Everything is currently in place for a deal, should Liverpool want to get it over the line. The club have a strong relationship with RB Leipzig and their sister club Salzburg, from negotiations for Naby Keita and Takumi Minamino. Not only that, but the player is hellbent on Liverpool. Liverpool could be using their Werner stance as a smokescreen, just like they did for Alisson (Image: GETTY) He wants to test himself in the Premier League but also work under Jurgen Klopp, his compatriot. Liverpool also play a similar system to the one that Werner has thrived in for Leipzig under Julian Nagelsmann. There has been talk that Klopp wants to meet with the player to discuss a move. Yet talks have been shelved amid the coronavirus crisis. DON'T MISS THE LATEST LIVERPOOL NEWS Liverpool are understood to have put all transfer plans on hold for the meantime. Despite that, there was huge surprise when Sky Sports reporter Vinny O'Connor claimed Liverpool were not interested in Werner and they are set for a quiet summer. "From what we have been hearing, even going back to the January transfer window, this one is very unlikely," he said during a Liverpool Q&A. "During the last window I was told Liverpool had no plans to sign him then and no plans to sign him in the summer and recently that message was repeated with regards to when the next window opens. There was talk Liverpool had cooled their interest on Alisson (Image: GETTY) "There has always been the caveat that Liverpool would be silly not to keep tabs on one of European football's hottest properties. "Judging by the talk from Werner himself, it's a move he clearly fancies. "The noises coming out of Anfield are that this one is not going to happen." The noise around Anfield still appears to be that Liverpool want Werner and the links just won't go away. If the past is anything to go by, then Werner could still very much be on the agenda. In the summer of 2018, Liverpool were said to have taken a backseat in the race to sign Alisson from Roma. The goalkeeper was also a target for Chelsea, after an impressive campaign with Roma as they reached the Champions League semi-finals. Days later to the reports which had distanced Liverpool from a deal, Alisson was on his way to Anfield. That's not to say that's the case with Werner, but Liverpool have mastered the art of moving stealthily since they were reported by Southampton for allegedly tapping up Virgil van Dijk.
