  1. Yeah, it can't be done without a ton of work and even then with long signal lengths it may not work at all. The gopro consists of 3 PCBs with fine pitch connectors between each board. The lens goes through the top two boards to the sensor on the third board. This thing is tight.

  2. There is a huge difference between a SD and a HD lens. For instance take a look at the 108 world record skydive. One of the videographers has a old .43 lenses on a HD camera, you can pick out right away the footage. HD world record With that said to allow for enough light to enter for a HD .3x lens, you will need a fairly big lens. Since you are doing Handicams you may feel comfortable just using a lower profile SD lens at the expense of quality. You will find that a good Opteka or Raynox HD lens is cheaper than a skydiving manufacturer SD lens.

  3. I really enjoy the Century .55x and use it for everything. A while back I wrote this up for the CX100 which basically summarizes everything.

  4. I must say I have seen this a ton at our local DZ. Almost seems like the contacts to the SDcard are just not that rigid for high vibration situations. As far as making sure you get the shot, the contour seems to be a lot more reliable and easier to make sure the camera is recording. It would be interesting to see if putting a few mils of film on the top side of the SD card would help prevent this from occurring on the GoPro.

(Disclaimer: I sell both cameras so I just want to make sure people get the right camera for themselves. There are Pros and Cons to each)

  5. I'm going to redo this video as soon as I possibly can. Looking on the casing I notice the black ring probably keeps out side light. The colors seem really washed out on the GoPro and doesn't seem 100%. I unfortunately did not see this until I came home to edit the footage.

Have you been comparing to the contourHD 1080p or just the contourHD version?

  6. I think I'm going to do this again on a different style of jump but it shows the quality differences of the three cameras.

The GoPro HD was shot in R5 mode without the case. I'm thinking the box may help the picture by blocking out side light. Next test jump I'll mount this.

The ContourHD was shot in HD mode. The CX150 in HQ mode with a Century .55x lens and Steadyshot set to active with wide conversion lens option set.

Rendered with Sony Vegas in 1920x1080 with no resampling and production assistant Large UGC widescreen template set to 14Mbps.

  7. Last I heard Cookiecomposites is about 6 weeks out for a box. Terry schumacher is also currently making one. In the meantime for top mounts I just recommend using a flatlock or a schumacher quick release.

  8. I think that ring is for a lens filter not a wide angle lens. It doesn't appear to have enough strength and may not even focus correctly with an additional wide angle lens on it.

I just showed tons of footage with the gopro and the contour at the expo. I don't have footage from the same exact jump but will slap a gopro, contour and my cx150 on my helmet next weekend. Sounds like a good comparison video. Stay tuned.

  9. Mike,

I'll see you in a couple days but this camera is totally smaller than the CX100. The mounting holes are a different distance from the lens both in the x and y dimension. I heard rumors that cookie is creating a box for it and Terry Schumacher is about ready with his latest box for this camera.

Another note that blows is this camera does have a different battery than the CX100. :-(

However, my soon favorite feature (I get to test it out in a day) is the ability to dump media directly from the camera to a HD. I'll post how it looks.

The CX150 picture is absolutely beautiful. I love it. I'll post some footage during or after the expo for everyone to view.

  10. We've been using a custom T-bar for a few weeks on 10 Contours out here in Arizona for a few hundred skydives. They have been holding up extremely well. I don't have final prices on them but they should be sub $50 and of course will be anodized.

I do find the contours are more reliable then the gopros but the gopros have more functionality and a more saturated color.

The team I made these for ended up mounting the bar to the helmet without the swivel clamp. The swivel clamp is good for non-flat surfaces but may not be needed in all applications. We did add notches for bunches to the swivel clamp if someone wants to add that to his or her application.

I should note that a piece of high density foam in the voids would be a great idea to prevent snag points. That is all...

  11. Ryan, was the camera out of the case when you found it after the fall? We noticed the cameras that survived our "drop" tests where those that stayed inside of the case with some help from gaffers tape. Almost seems that the impact doesn't kill the cameras, its the getting flung out of the case that does. Just a thought as strange as it may be.

  12. Place a piece of gaffer tape on the base of the mount. This helps out the wobble. You can change modes that make the image wider and narrower. Perhaps have your buddy select R5 mode as its narrower. There is a video on our website comparing the wideness of the different modes.

Yeah Gopro's country issues are a PIA but I understand why they do it.

  13. On this stuff weight gives stability, especially if the battery is in the center. You can always AFF it over an unpopulated area, release it and then fly it as a skyball especially if the weight is in the center. Depends why you want it in the sky and who else needs to be in the shot. What's the story and what's it being used for?
