MegaGoliath11 0 #1 July 27, 2008 I have a Sony CX-7 and a Macbook Pro. I don't have Final Cut pro or other software that allows me to edit AVCHD so I have been recording alot in SD quality. The problem is that I can't get my MAC to play the MPEG files that the CX-7 produces. The files appear as .MPG but quicktime just says the file is not a movie file. Can somebody who has a CX-7 explain how they get the file to play? Do I have to convert the SD files? I am trying to import them in ImovieHD and edit them with that. I am aware I can't work with AVCHD unless I get Final Cut Express 4 of Sony Vegas. Please Help!!
DSE 3 #2 July 27, 2008 you need latest iMovie, Streamclip, FlipFactory, or something similar. Or run Bootcamp and a tool like Vegas.
MegaGoliath11 0 #3 July 27, 2008 As far as the HD footage I know you need Imovie 08, Final Cut 4, or Vegas, etc. But I was under the impression that if you recorded in SD quality you didn't that. The SD files appear as a .mpg file.
DSE 3 #4 July 27, 2008 Your initial post didn't indicate you're shooting SD... SD files aren't AVCHD, they're MPEG2. iMovie6 and FCE should open them just fine. If they're not opening, be sure you have the latest updates for your iMovie. OS version and iMovie version information might be helpful here.

DSE 3 #6 July 29, 2008 no. You'd have to run bootcamp, use a conversion software like AVCHD UpShift, and then put the resulting mov file into iMovie. Easier to upgrade your iMovie, IMO.
unclecharlie95 3 #7 August 5, 2008 I have a CX6 and would like to know peoples experiences working with the AVCHD files on modern Macs. On my current PC and old iMac the experience is slow and frustrating! But I am thinking of upgrading to a Mac Book Pro...BASEstore.it
DSE 3 #8 August 5, 2008 on my MBP, I get full playback on the Windows side of Bootcamp, but lousy playback in iMovie. If you read the various video communities out there, this is common. If Apple would directly support the MTS format, it would be so much easier rather than the convert on ingest. If you have bootcamp, PM me and I'll prolly be able to help you out.
