Maybe add a student forum?

Recommended Posts

Just an idea, I think it would be good to have a forum out there for skydivers in training to talk about our learning experiences and ask questions about what we can do to improve. Having a single post will keep us newbies from having to search through different forums to get assistance. Not that it is not workable as it is with all the tools you have made available such as the watch thread tool, I just would like to talk to others in my situation in one place.

I think this has been suggested before.

The biggest concern seems to be the whole "Blind leading the blind" thing.
You don't want to be taking advice that could one day save/cost you your life from some guy like me, or other newer jumpers.

Most questions are probably best answered by a coach or instructor at your DZ anyway (You'll read that ALOT here - and that's because it's true :P )

That being said, you should feel free to post any general questions in the gear/training/general sections. There is indeed a weath of knoweledge on this site, but just make sure to have your BS meter set on 'high' and verify everything with a coach/instructor at your DZ)

If you're worried about asking overlapping questions that get asked over and over (i.e. "which gear should I buy", etc) do a forum search at the top of the page - you'd be suprised what you can find.

Welcome to the sport, and to the forums BTW :)

Its not a bad idea, infact the idea has been brought up before (more then once infact), but there are some concerns. Primarily the concerns brought up in the initial response. You can see that in the responses that student jumpers get from experienced jumpers here. The typical response is "heres what it is in the SIM, and go talk to your instructors, don't believe anything else you read here until you talk to your instructor.

Each DZ's student progression is different, every DZ's methods are different (even if only a little), so information here wouldn't really help you that much. Infact for students at USPA DZs they would be much better served by reading the SIM then talking to their instructors.

As for emotional support from other students, you can get that in some of the other forums right now, if that's the primary reason you're asking. Don't be bashful, get in Bonfire and post!:)
