Small groups: Search and Rescue, Pathfinders, HALO, HAHO, and most Special Forces use large square canopies. However, if you are dropping large hundreds at a time - from below 1,000 feet - you are better off using non-steerable round canopies. Many paratroopers are not bright enough to steer a canopy - without colliding with their buddies - and from 500 feet, there is precious little time to steer anyways.
