So why is the billionaire's backing of what he believes in problematic? In a word: transparency. How many people, for instance, know that James Hansen, a man billed as a lonely "NASA whistleblower" standing up to the mighty U.S. government, was really funded by Soros' Open Society Institute , which gave him "legal and media advice"? That's right, Hansen was packaged for the media by Soros' flagship "philanthropy," by as much as $720,000, most likely under the OSI's "politicization of science" program........ ----------------------------------------------- More http://newsbusters.org/blogs/jake-gontesky/2007/09/26/global-warming-alarmist-james-hansen-shill-george-soros QuoteIs Global Warming Alarmist James Hansen a Shill for George Soros? By Jake Gontesky | September 26, 2007 - 09:58 ET The claims against anthropogenic global warming skeptics are often the same: they're all shills for big oil or other industry wishing to poke holes in the 'consensus theory' of global warming (which isn't a consensus at all). Under the so-called "politicization of science" program, George Soros' (the favorite fundraiser of many democrats) has reportedly given as much as $720,000 to Hansen to help package his alarmist claims and get them pushed by the mainstream media (The Soros Threat to Democracy): How many people, for instance, know that James Hansen, a man billed as a lonely "NASA whistleblower" standing up to the mighty U.S. government, was really funded by Soros' Open Society Institute , which gave him "legal and media advice"? Casurf1978 0 #2 September 28, 2007 Read up on his background. He spent a boat load of money fighting communism and promoting democracy in Eastern Europe. I guess this is why Reps hate him so much: http://www.campaignmoney.com/biography/george_soros.asp Soros at one time spent over $100 million on new text books, libraries and teacher training in former Soviet Union states. He supported Poland's Solidarity movement, apartheid opponents in South Africa and dissedents in Eastern Europe. Talk about a left wing nut job. billvon 2,475 #3 September 28, 2007 >James Hansen, a man billed as a lonely "NASA whistleblower" standing up >to the mighty U.S. government, was really funded by Soros' Open Society >Institute . . . Turns out that's a lie, too. (Not saying you're lying; you probably just saw that on a denier website and were too trusting.) He didn't get one dime from OSI. >which gave him "legal and media advice"? GAP, which is a nonprofit watchdog organization, gave him free legal advice after he gave an interview. OSI, run by Soros, contributed $100,000 to GAP in 2006. It's akin to claiming that Bill O'Reilly is "funded by terrorists" because an oil company bought an ad on FOX TV - and some of the investors in that oil company were from Iran. Is this really what the deniers have been reduced to? Swift boating that doesn't even stand up to rudimentary fact checking? Again, not blaming you - just the source you posted. NCclimber 0 #4 September 28, 2007 Good one, Bill. This story looks like a creative and blatantly dishonest case of "connect the dots".

I was not aware that the Investor's Business Daily http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Investor's_Business_Daily website was considered to be a "denier website". I have not found sources for the claims they made though. How do you know he didn't receive funding directly from OSI? 1969912 0 #6 September 28, 2007 QuoteHow do you know he didn't receive funding directly from OSI? You be correct BillVon, Hansen did not, apparently, receive direct OSI funding. Here are the relevant sections of the OSI annual report from pages 123 and 143: "James E. Hansen, the director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies at NASA, protested attempts to silence him after officials at NASA ordered him to refer press inquiries to the public affairs office and required the presence of a public affairs representative at any interview. The Government Accountability Project, a whistleblower protection organization and OSI grantee, came to Hansen's defense by providing legal and media advice. The campaign on Hansen's behalf resulted in a decision by NASA to revisit its media policy." "note: The Strategic Opportunities Fund includes grants related to Hurricane Katrina ($1,652,841); media policy ($1,060,000); and politicization of science ($720,000)." http://www.soros.org/resources/articles_publications/publications/annual_20070731/a_complete.pdf "Once we got to the point where twenty/something's needed a place on the corner that changed the oil in their cars we were doomed . . ." -NickDG
