Canopy Collisions On The Rise

With nine fatal accidents in the past ten months, canopy collisions are definitely on the rise. The accidents have mostly been the result of a collision between jumpers flying a high-performance approach, diving through groups of lower canopies flying at lower speeds. Drop zone owners, managers and S&TAs should address this issue before the upcoming weekend. Once the newly established guidelines have been finalized, make sure each jumper is fully aware of the new landing area policies when arriving at the drop zone. The time for action is now, our membership is asking for safer skies and it is up to each of us to make the necessary changes! Safety Check in the March issue of Parachutist offers some suggestions on how to help make our landing patterns safer:

USPA Safety Day
Here is one final reminder regarding the Safety Day reports for Parachutist. When preparing your submission, be sure to follow the guidelines below. The idea is to report about the new and interesting activities as the focus of the narrative, but be sure to include the other information listed below.

USPA will report on Safety Day activities in the May issue of Parachutist magazine. Drop zones are encouraged to submit reports on the day’s activities by March 21, 2007, for inclusion in the May issue. DZs should include the following information:

  • Drop zone name and location

  • Date of Safety Day event

  • Number of participants

  • Seminars held and names of speakers

  • Sponsors

  • Up to a 200-word description of new or innovative techniques, discussions or presentations used to promote safety

  • Ches Judy Award recipient, including reason for his or her selection

DZs are encouraged to submit a photograph of the event for publication consideration. Drop zones holding the event on a later date may submit a report by April 18, 2007, to be published in the June issue, provided space is available in the magazine.

Reports and photographs may be sent via e-mail to [email protected].
