dterrick 0 #1 October 7, 2003 I seem to remember a certain greenie talking of his electrical generating system and actually getting PAID by the power utility. Welll, ahead of your time, Bill - it may be coming to Winnipeg. ...as reported in this morning's Winnipeg Free Press...: QuoteWind turbines suggested for city Council committee wants to run tests Tue Oct 7 2003 By Patti Edgar WIND turbines could spring up on Winnipeg rooftops over the next few years. The city's environment committee wants to help set up a wind turbine in the city to see how effective it would be for homeowners and businesses. If it works, they could sprout up all over the city. Coun. Gord Steeves said during an August tour of the Netherlands he was impressed by a wind turbine called the Turby, built by a company from that country. The $10,000 to $15,000, five-metre-high wind turbine pumps out enough energy over the course of a day to power the average Netherlands household. It's not clear if the Turby would be as effective in Winnipeg's climate nor what kind of regulatory hoops would need to be jumped through before a wind turbine could be put up here. That's what the city could learn by helping put up a prototype on a public or private building, said Steeves. The environment committee is looking into finding funding from governments and private investors to install the first Turby and plans to contact Manitoba Hydro to find out if the turbine could be hooked up to the main energy grid. If not, it could power part of the building, such as emergency exit signs. Committee members are also looking at other types of wind turbines, including one built by a Quebec company. "At those types of prices, if they worked in Winnipeg's cold weather, that is the kind of thing people could do on their own, for their own homes," said Steeves. "As long as Manitoba Hydro doesn't drop some kind of big surprise on us, it's really quite doable." As nice as having no electrical bill would be, I think I'd STILL wish for calm days (...better swooping y'knowDave
