ShOuLdEr 0 #1 October 8, 2003 Hi My names Ian and I'm in the marine corps but i have 2 bad shoulders because i got them hurt badly in iraq and now they frequently pop out of socket when i swing them around i was wondering if any of you think it might be dangerous (well extra dangerous) if i skydived with my condition. In other words will the jump jerk my shoulders around alot?

At my DZ, people with a history of popping shoulders, are not allowed to skydive, unless they have their shoulders surgically repaired. Your arms are extremely important during a skydive, as you use them to control your body position during freefall, and, most of all, at pull time. You also use them to steer the canopy during the descent. If your arms pop out of their sockets, they become useless......... I've witnessed a few people with popped shoulders , land in the bush, because they were unable to steer the canopy at all.... I also know a few people whose will to skydive was strong enough, that they chose to have surgery to repair a shoulder or both. They now enjoy skydiving as much as I am. Don't put your life at risk. Better be safe than sorry...... Good luck. Yves.

metalslug 31 #6 October 8, 2003 You can read a thread related to this here. Surgery is probably the best option, but not necessarily the only option. Hookit wears a shoulder brace and Tonto has some good suggestions for dealing with shoulder problems both in freefall and under canopy.
