  1. Anyone having issues with theirs locking on GPS? I've had mine for a few years and in the last year or so I'm having terrible luck with it locking signal. I turn it on at the DZ in the morning before jumping to be sure it gets a lock. I turn it on at 9k on the way up in the plane and most of the time it doesn't get a lock until I'm at 10-9k on the way DOWN.

  2. Slightly frustrated.

Just got this a few minutes ago:

    Dear James,

We're getting close to the end of December and we know you're anxious to hear an update on the status of the Flight HUD project. Unfortunately, there has been a delay to our ship date due to key components from our suppliers being delayed. Flight HUD will ship by the end of January, latest. We will send you another update when your specific ship date in January is finalized.

Thank you for again for your support and patience! We know Flight HUD will be worth the wait.

    Sincerely,

    Dan Eisenhardt
    President & CEO

In all honesty you shouldn't be flying it if you can't gauge altitude with your eyes. The point of this product is to help dial in a good glide ratio and forward speed.

That's not a justification for a lousy product feature.

  4. I'm curious to hear from people who have tried it. When I called them a month or so ago they gave me a few very disappointing answers. I asked them how frequently the display updated the altitude. I knew they said the speed would update once per second, but they told me the altitude would only update on the display every TEN seconds. No, they didn't tell me 10Hz, I know the difference. The person that called me may have not known the difference. But to me the alti only displaying updates every 10 seconds is very disappointing. The other thing I was disappointed to hear is that there will not be any sort of SDK. It's all closed.

Sure. Now I wonder if the altimeter sensor they are talking about is actually a barometric sensor. In some countries they use the word altimeter sensor to describe a "barometric sensor" Lets hope this is the case. Anyone knows?

It says on the site that there is a barometric sensor...

If you want to see what the display really looks like, all you need to do is find a ski shop with one of the Zeal instruments goggles with the Recon MOD HUD installed in stock. They'll be happy to turn it on and let you try it on.

I've put those on before. I mean how will it be setup specifically for us. There is a mockup on their site but in that example it only shows speed and glide, no alti. I'm curious how that will all be presented to us. Will we be able to change it?

Why don't you go to the Recon site & read the info there?

"Recon Instruments MOD was designed and built for giving real-time info to skiers direct-to-eye. The sensors within this device, however, are ideal for providing flight metrics. There is an onboard accelerometer, altimeter and GPS system, which would allow us to provide forward speed, glide ratio and altitude. We would need to build completely new software to accurately pull and display this information, which is the whole point of this Recon Labs project."

I'm assuming that was directed at gisellemartins. I'm looking for a little bit more specific info. I've read the whole labs page.

  7. I hope Jeb/Recon can chime in or something. I'm curious what the data will look like on the HUD. I saw the mockup on Engadget but the Recon page says it will have altitude as well, which isn't on the Engadget mockup. I'd love to see how all of the data will be presented. As well as what kind of options/settings will exist. I also see that there is a barometric pressure sensor in it which is a good sign for the altimeter not being GPS based. I guess for ease of answering here are the questions I have:

1: What will the HUD actually look like?
2: Is the alti GPS based or is it using the barometric sensor?
3: Will the whole HUD be on a 1 second refresh or just the GPS? (IE 1 second GR/speed updates but live altitude readings)
4: If the alti is using the barometric sensor will the GR be calculated with the barometric data for alti and GPS data for horizontal speed or will the GR be calculated using only GPS? (I'm not sure which would be more accurate, just curious on the technical details)
5: What kind of user settings/options are there?
6: Is it possible that we can have more than 1 second updates at the cost of battery life?
7: Will it be open source so we can tweak things ourselves?

If I get the standard model (without paralog) will I still be able to view my flights on PC ? Not much of computer geek & really want it to improve body position, but would be nice to log times etc.

You can also download Paralog for free to view the flysight files. You just can't save a jump log without paying. But Paralog has a nice view for the data.

  9. I am curious what people consider full flight. I feel like you can be in full flight without being in max glide. I can fly around, all wings open, legs out, arms down but just flying in a level or slightly head high position and I would still consider that full flight and pull from that flight mode no problem. I wouldn't want to do it head low with tons of forward drive going on though.

Sure, it's nicer to fly legs out, but that only works well if you have a flock of people with appropriate suits/weights/skills, which doesn't always happen.

That sums it up. For the record, I'm not complaining about flying folded up. I had a friggin blast on the flock.

Rather like we fly in a flock.

In quite a few cases thats actually arms swooped back, body arched and legs up:P;)

I guess that's what I get for being 115lbs and flocking in an X :D

I don't consider that full flight. Though I use the term "full flight" loosely like some others do.

I calculate your fall rate using 70 seconds per 1000 feet to be 9.7 mph. That's pretty impressive.

He's from Switz, that's 1000 meters not feet.

I've been told that the freefall storm flares quite a bit better than the crw storm so that may be the reason.

That very well could be. If I ever come across a smaller crw storm I will try to put a couple jumps on it. I'm curious to see the different characteristics.

The openings were the only thing I preferred about the storm over the lightning. But I'm manly a big way person, and a small way person, but the competition teams all seem to like storms so there must be a reason. I've got 8000 jumps, a really large number on small 7-cells and a thousand on 75-85 square foot ellipticals. I almost never fall down on landing. Of my half dozen jumps on the storm 97 the best I managed to pull off was just going down to a knee. To this day I don't have a clue what the trick is to get any kind of flare out of it.

This really surprises me. I'm not a CRW guy (yet) but I fly a Storm for wingsuiting(which is all I do). I'm on a 135 which leaves me at a 1:1 and I'm in love with that canopy. I've also jumped it with 20lbs of weights on. I always find it seems to have a never ending flare. You clearly have way more experience than I do so I'm not saying your wrong but in my experience it has been a pleasure to land my Storm(non CF version). My absolute favorite landing canopy I've tried so far. I've put about 300 jumps on that Storm and I couldn't be happier. I'm downsizing and bought another in fact. I've let a few people jump it and they loved it as well. In fact most jumps I don't need to flare paste my waist, if I do I pop up. I experienced the same thing on the 120 I demoed. That being said there has to be a technique to it. When I moved to a Spectre I couldn't land it softly to save my life. They were all stand up but hard, it took me 6 or so jumps to change my technique to work with the Spectre. With you're experience(especially compared to mine) I'm hesitant to say it's technique but who knows.

Example: This was a no wind swoop club morning. Tiny coincidence, the guy in the background was also on a Storm.

...I would think that when you let go of the gripper, it would tend to elevate due to aero loads and not allow a grip as in the pic. Am I wrong?...

I noticed in my V4 when I let go of the grippers surprisingly they don't move very much. They do elevate a bit like you said but not so much that you can't get around them easily. When I let go to take docks it's always right there to grab again.

I'm trying to figure out which mount I need to fit a flysight to a cookie G2.

    Anyone has this setup?

With the template I printed it seems the best would be "90" horizontal and "141" vertical. Doesn't seem to be a model that is currently made.

Before I email flysight to see if they plan to make one, I'd like to hear how you installed your flysight. I don't wear a camera box, and would prefer a real mount to duct tape, bungees or velcro :)

    Thanks a lot!

I'm curious about this as well. I don't own a printer so I can't print the template. :D

I just velcro that sucker onto my helmet right now.
