  1. That canopy is produced here in South Africa - maybe that is why it is cheap? (The pilot is also produced in South Africa).
Our exchange rate is terrible at the moment if we bringing stuff here from USA but the other way around....

I have not jumped it nor any of the Parachute system canopies, but I have heard a lot of positive things from other jumpers about this canopy.

  2. With regards to the A6000 vs A5000, if I remember correctly the 5000 does not have a view finder (who cares if you using it for skydiving).
It has a slower burst rate (again probably not a bad thing as 11 fps is probably too much for most).
I don't think it has the fast AF that the 6000 has. I think it's only contrast detect focus if I'm not mistaken.

  3. Keeping in mind I am a amateur ground photographer (with aspirations to become a freefall photographer)...

In my opinion, by moving from an entry-level Nikon to the Sony A6000, I would say you not losing anything and you are gaining lots.

Have a look at http://snapsort.com/compare/Nikon-D3200-vs-Sony-Alpha-A6000 - which lists the pros and cons of the d3200 vs A6000.

    1. According to the link - the d3200 has faster AF but looking at reviews I know the A6000 AF is super fast too ("the world's fastest autofocus for a APS-C mirrorless camera")

    2. A6000 Shoots faster - 11fps vs 4fps

    3. Probably the main reason I want the A6000 is it is a lot smaller and lighter than DSLR, especially when you throw on a small pancake prime like 16mm. That is really important if you want to skydive with a camera on your head ;)

Having said that, I have not played with the A6000 yet, but I have ordered one :) Will only have it in 2 months though :|:o:S

Cant wait to eventually take it in the air!

So there's the option of using Med setting to eliminate the need for being right on top of the subject... but all the shots I've seen in Med setting looked unsmooth. People are texting in this thread about possibilities of smoothing that out, but I'd like to see a good freefall video shot in Med on any GoPro. Maybe the ND filter can help. Any presenters?

How would an ND filter help here?

A friend of mine gave me grief over not choosing the equivalent in a Nikon

Your friend would be wrong - you should have gone for a Sony ;):D

You will always find people gunning for 1 brand. In my opinion Canon/Nikon is the same thing, its just which ever one you chose first when you first started buying camera gear.

I'm still keen to get myself the Sony A6000 though...

  6. Just this morning in sunny South Africa...

I commute to work via a train known as Gautrain.

A piece of shit taxi "gang" was beating up a women outside Gautrain station. Ran up to them while trying to find pepper spray that was not there (got new bike pants last night and pepper spray in the old ones).
One dude threatened me to stay away. Couple other people came came to help too.
Pretty much as I got there it stopped.
I then took photos and videos of them. They were threatening me.
Apparently what happened before was the taxi cut her off (as per usual). They started swearing at each other. Taxi driver got out and started smashing her mirrors and and windows and then she pepper sprayed him. They caught up with her by Gautrain...

Taxis think they own the road. If you park by the Gautrain they threaten you saying its there spot....

  7. ... What did South Africa have before candles - Electricity!!
    This place is falling apart...

Where in world has this criteria:
    1. Most people speak English
    2. Government not grossly corrupt.
    3. Government educated and competent.
    4. People follow the rules of the road.
    5. Police not mostly criminal and are competent.
    6. You don't need to be worried about getting robbed/hijacked all the time
    7. The weather "jumpable' most of the year
    8. A wind tunnel not too far away (I am flexible on the tunnel)
    9. Large skydiving community

  8. Nice thing about the A6000 is its super fast hybrid auto-focus - it can shoot at 11 fps with AF inbetween each and every shot.

The 3N has slower contrast detect AF so as far as I know, in burst mode it locks the AF on the first shot and if your subject moves thereafter all the following shots will be out of focus.
