  1. Angle of attack. The acute angle formed between the chord line of an airfoil and the direction of the air striking the airfoil.

Angle of incidence. The angle formed by the chord line of the wing and a line parallel to the longitudinal axis of the airplane.

At what level did you teach aerodynamics? I have yet to see a text book on airplane aerodynamics that didn't include polar curves.

My experance in aviation is Flying for 12 years professional since 2003. I flew CH-47 in the Army and currently fly corporate jet for a living. I have been a flight instructor since 2005 on both airplanes and helicopters. I hold a Comercial license with an instrument rating for Airplanes multi and single engine land, and helicopters. CFI both airplanes and helicopters and three type ratings. DA-20, IA-Jet, and CH-47. Whats yours.
Also I can't find a polar curve in the "pilots handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge" witch is considered the primary source the FAA request Instructors teach from. Maybee I just missed it.

Now the hard part, start by calling up PD/Icarus/Aerodyne and demo the Sabre2/Safire2/Pilot in the 210 range, sell the Heatwave and buy something like the three canopies listed in the 210 size. If you do, you'll be more likely to look back at this in 10 years and laugh at this all

My plan is to go down and get some coaching at Dallas or maybee even down at spaceland if I can swing it. The person I was talking about earlier in the post who offered to give some coach was Rory down there. If I had someone who was constructively critising my flying and told me that I should probally up size I would give alot more serious thought to it.

Hey, it happens, I've been known to load up a canopy myself; however, something that is very important to understand is that a significant weight gain is something consider. Consider to the point of making an upsize.

When I had under 200 jumps I was on a Heatwave 170. It was a horrible decision, let me explain why. The was too small for me, Skybytch was there back then telling me that it was too small, I told her basically what you've said here. I never broke a bone or hooked in, but overall I got lucky. That not with standing, it took me LONGER to become a good swooper due to having to fight against a canopy that was too fast too soon!

I firmly believe that if I had bought/jumped a Sabre2 210 instead of a Heatwave 170, then I would have progressed faster and learned faster and would have been a better swooper sooner. That would mean I would be a better swooper now!

Now see I actually value that opinion. Thanks Aggie Dave

There is a big difference between someone with 200 jumps' worth of experience and someone with one jump's worth of experience repeated 200 times. That is why just using jump numbers as an indicator is absurd.

    I

    agree 100%

How the hell do you know what my attidude is toward downsizing.

I guess this says it all, really.

So my attitude towards downsizing sucks even though I have never actually downsized. Hmmmm.

Not just useful - it's required as part of the written test for the glider rating.

I fail to see why you think it doesn't apply to the question.

OK I will conceed, If your flying up high back from a long spot, dealing with shifting winds, rising and falling air, and hand an aispeed indicator this would be great. As a pilot are you thinking about this in your landing flare? No. Your goal on landing is to bleed off airspeed for lift to touch down at the slowest possible speed. Its the same for canopy flight.

So you realize that the guy that swooped into a spool (the guy caused this thread) had the exact same mindset and attitude that you do, right? What exactly is the harm in listening to what experienced people are telling you and chilling out on your downsizing? Are you actually aware of the potential consequences of your actions not just to yourself but others?

How the hell do you know what my attidude is toward downsizing. What would you say if I started on a 190 but my weight has just gone up. You prejudge on jump numbers and wing loading with out having any idea on the pilot, his history, and ability. If you have been trying to teach us young jumpers than thankyou even if we are to hard headed to listen to it. If all you do is critizise shut the hell up. thats what turns us off from listening to others

  8. OK, I can see how that would be usefull to a glider pilot but I don't think it correlates very well to the question. If we were flying paragliders with high lift to weight ratio, we could worry about rising and decending air.
Because induced drag decreases with airspeed and parasite drag increases with airspeed any airfoil will perform it's best at L/D max "best lift over drag airspeed. That being said wind will have an effect on glide ratio in non still air. As we all know we move farther across the ground when flying with the wind.
When talking about the length of distance across the ground we cover in a flare we are talking about energy and the ablity of our canopy to use that energy. The 96 he is refering to will have a slower approach speed an a higher glide ratio in the flare due to the increased drag and the decreased load factor and the larger surface to transfer the energy of airspeed and altitude into lift. The same reason while the wings on your glider are so damn long. His 76 will fly faster but will not glide as far because it has a higer terminal velocity "less drag" but doesn't have the ability, becuase of its size, to transfer as much energy into lift. The higher performance we make a wing the higher L/D max will be. ie. Your glider might be 35 knots while the jet I fly is 250. As far as the ability to transfer energy a helicopter makes a perfect example. We could make helicopter bades half the size that they are and they would perform better in flight, however durring autorotation becuase the lower enertia they would not be able to transfer enough energy to lift to alow a safe touchdown.
I hope this answers some questions.

Amen, buddy! Who knows you better than you?! All these old farts are jealous and trying to keep you down. Look forward to having some of your photo and video contributions to the School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying, they will definitely take you under "there" wing!

Way to prove my point about the difference between being a sarcatic ass hole and a coach.

With your last canopy, could you land it 10 times out of 10 in a 10m circle standing up?

Yes and I can with this one too!
Look I'm not trying to justify my wing loading. I'm just tired of hearing people bitch about before the even see me fly it.

The difference is some listen and some ignore.

I realize some people are extremely arrogant, but I find its more the way people approach the situation. Out of the 10 DZ I have been to I have had one guy as me if he could come out and video my landing and then sit down and critique it. At all the rest I had to ask for coaching and then usually not got it.

Oh and I fully believe that if someone is being unsafe around others and refuses to listen to coaching than the S&TA should be doing something about it.

  11. If there is one thing I have learned in this sport is that Skydivers are going to progress the way they want to or die trying. This is comming from someone with 125 jumps loaded 1.4 on a fully eliptical. Rather than just critisize the jumper for for wanting to progress. Wouldn't it be better if a more experienced pilot took them under there wing. Even if the jumper refuses to listen about not downsizing he will probally still listen to ways to improve his piolting and keep him from killing himself.

Its time to start being a coach rather than a critic!

  12. BG,
I have 125 jumps and fly a Heatwave 190 loaded at 1.4. I have been working on 90 degree landings and carving. I have read your book, down sizing chart, and Novack's checklist. I am wondering at what point can a jumper disregard the jump numbers for down sizing and use the ability of the pilot. I would like to get a recomendation from you for a canopy coach in the midwest " Oklahoma Area" that could evaluate me on my ability and not the jump numbers. I would like someones honest opinion weather I could be safe on a smaller canopy.

Also, I was reading about the non-linear nature of scale effect. Your book says that aerodynamics don't scale, and I can't understand why they wouldn't. Having taught aerodynamics for airplanes and helicopters I thought I knew this subject pretty well. Airplane manufactures in the past used scale models to determine stall speeds, stability characteristics, and drag ratios prior to ever building a prototype. If it works on a rigid airfoil how does that differfrom a nonrigid canopy? Are there any theoretical differences between a canoy and an airplane wing?

  13. I am looking for help selecting a free fly suit. I have 70 jumps and just recently started working on free flying via the tunnel at Eloy and Perris. I am also a pilot a the local DZ and don't always have time to change suits between flying and jumping, so I would like a two piece suit so that i may shed the jacket on hot days. Also I'm 6'2" 230 and would like a suit that would provide enough lift in the tunnel to continue practicing. I know there are a lot of threads on suit recommendations but all of the are pretty outdated.
    Thanks for the Help

  14. If you guys want to talk all this trash about a DZ you might want to actually stop jumping there. Skydiving should be for hippies and laid back people only. Instead you guys sound like a bunch of lawyers sitting around Star Bucks arguing over some quantum physics or shit. SHUT UP! If this sport wasn’t dangerous what the hell would be the point. I also think it’s funny that no one has mentioned that neither this drop zone nor this DZO has ever had a fatality. So once again SHUT UP! I hate the people in this sport that try and dot every T and cross every I “and yes I did that on purpose I hope it annoys you”. You probably only got into this sport to brag to your friends or try and impress some girl, but it didn’t work did it. Your stories got old, and the girl wasn’t impressed and that’s why your
