  1. I am looking to purchase mesh netting - not for manufacturing my own pilot chutes, but to use as mosquito/no-see-um netting. My Vector pilot chute mesh is just the material I am looking for... does anyone know where container companies, specifically UPT, gets their raw materials? Or does any have any info - anything more than what Google can tell me?

    Thanks in advance

Does this happen on every jump? Does it clear eventually, or only when you release the toggles? I jump the same canopy with a similar, but slightly higher WL. Not all that irregularly I get a bit of funk on opening. Perfect Spectre snivel, on heading etc, but the center cells sometimes take a while to properly inflate. It causes a lot of shuddering, searching and general instability much like a stall. This clears well before I've touched the toggles, but sounds like a similar thing that you're experiencing.
Inspections reveal nothing untoward and flies fantastically otherwise, so I just put it down to my packing!

This wasn't of much use to you, I'm sure, but I'm interested to hear what people say about your experience :)

Thanks for the input.. you seem to be one of the only other people that seem to know what we're talking about.

It doesn't happen on every jump and will pretty much clear itself prior to releasing the brakes. It just seems more happy overall when it's in full flight.

Maybe it doesn't matter, but what is the DOM of your Spectre?

  3. Posting this for a friend who doesn't have an account here....

I ordered a custom Spectre 170 and have put 80 jumps on it. Until recently, the openings had been nice. Recently, after my canopy opens but prior to releasing the brakes, the canopy will fully inflate, but then partially deflate where I have a “falling” sensation, then it will reinflate to “stable” flying. At this point I have not put any input to the canopy. It’s not until after releasing the brakes that it really feels comfortable to be flying under. It will sometimes even "buck" a little until brakes are released. Once brakes are released, the canopy flies, flares, and lands great.

The only thing that has been done to this canopy in it’s 80 jumps is having the brake lines shortened twice, two inches each time, and only from the cat-eye down. Maybe it’s just coincidence, but this problem on openings hadn’t happened until after the second time I had the brake lines shortened.

I’ve never had the sensation of stalling on opening like I have recently been experiencing. What could cause this?

I had two riggers independently measured the control lines from attachment point to cat-eye. They said they were correct according to the spec chart. Everything else looked to be in good shape and the line trim is measured correctly.

I am 5’7 and my exit weight is 180lbs. 300 jumps in a couple years, flew a 190 Pulse before this Spectre 170.

  4. I have a Micro Raven reserve, manufactured in '91, loaded lightly at 0.7:1

I used it once and I did a PLF on landing. I practiced flaring up high and it was stalling at about half of what I would flare my main at, so I didn't want to risk trying to run it out B|

I also don't know why, but my landings also improved greatly when I went down to a 190 from a 210. Now I'm under a 170 that I just LOVE!! :)

Interesting. I wonder if there's other people out there with similar experiences?

I was flying a 200 through AFF, then through renting went from a 200 to 170, and now I fly a 150. I'm still only loaded at 0.8, but have found that the response is much better as I have gone down. I have been told that when the wing is loaded too LIGHTLY, you don't have as much power to fly it and land it properly. I'm still learning though :)

    Had a mal.
    Packed reserve.
    Jumped. Another mal.

US nationals in Tellequah, OK. 70 something. They threatened to throw me out of the nationals. I asked the pilot what speed they were going on jump run (accuracy). He told me around 70 Knots. I asked for more air speed and hummed it. The thing opened and then they bitched about my opening altitude. Ya just can't make the USPA happy.

    Nice.. what were the mals?

It's awesome... Loved the Jew Bear coming out with his bat and beating the nazi officer to death. :D

    Omar: I don't speak Italian.

Aldo: Like I said, third best"

    :D

  8. Yes, successful in that you are not getting injured during your landings! You have been able to practice crash landings and do so well it seems.. and are comfortable performing a PLF.. that's a great skill to have! Great job, and congrats on your new shiny toy!

  9. Great cartoon once again!

Mistakes are fine, I have no doubt you will learn from this one. No one got hurt, it was pointed out to you in a polite way, you're more aware of another portion of your skydive.. sounds productive and good!

My first mistake was around jump 15 or so. I jump at Perris, and this particular jump I landed and was headed back to the packing area.. I heard and saw the plane coming in for landing but for some reason didn't think it was going as fast as it was.. :S and went to cross the runway in front of it [:/]. The alarms sounded to back away from it, so I did.. the plane landed and passed me. No problems, but I got a reminder from the staff of how dangerous that is and if I didn't move back fast enough I could make the plane go around, delay everyone.. etc.

Like your 180, it was minor and no one got hurt, but I sure beat myself up over that little thing. No biggie, but every since then I am so far from that runway if a plane is taking off or landing... Better to have a small mishap to get you to really examine yourself than a big problem later!

    Good job!

  10. Wouldn't you want to release your main before going to silver? Especially since the pilot chute was slightly out... I would be afraid it could dislodge itself and open the main while under the reserve.

No criticism here, I am just wondering/curious
