The lessons learned are obvious. I could have taken 30 seconds and pulled out the pilot chute and made sure it was cocked.
If you have never had one let me tell you in a high speed mal the ground gets big FAST.
OK there is my dumb ass story. It was an expensive lesson.

Tsk Tsk, Rick! ;) Glad you got your reserve out fast!

I've been there...I checked because I had a bad feeling and it was not cocked. Eep!

Hope to see you soon -- gotta get to Zhills some this fall/winter.

Going back to the subject of the USPA Nationals is it time to potentially propose a "sponsorship" clause to the UPSA to encourage/force teams that are being sponsored with free/reduced jumps or tunnel time/gear to move to the advanced level? If so where would the line need to be drawn at since most DZ's offer team rates for all skill levels? Is it the team members need to pay at least 75% of their way out of pocket? More or less from there?

That would be a nightmare to enforce though, even more so than a jump numbers limit for intermediate. Competitors could always fudge the team's financials. And they may or may not be caught. Then you get a "he said she said" thing going on before, during, or after nationals.

If someone rich with about 400 jumps had found 3 other similarly-experienced jumpers and paid for all their training jumps and tunnel time and then they won gold this year in intermediate, would people complain then too?

I say leave it as is and kudos to the air force teams!

  3. I have some hilarious old photos of her and Jeannie, Gabe, Dewey etc. I will try to find them and email them out.

Here's a funny memory: One night we were all quite toasted and she and I were walking over to Janine's to bug her. She tripped over god knows what in the grass and landed on her face and I was trying to help her up and she said laughing, "wait, wait, no, leave me down here, this is hilarious, take a photo!"

Maybe I'll find that photo with the others...

Sad she's gone...and hoping Sky is making a good come back.

  4. I didn't realize Lasik was considered successful if you came out 20/40 or better. Interesting...

The prescription for my contacts is -8.50 in one eye, -7.50 in the other. Quite nearsighted. But I'm still too chicken to get surgery for it!

  5. The tandems here will jump in stuff that I won't jump in (25mph+ and ugly). So if they're called down, I would land with the plane too. It's not usually a big surprise though...usually the winds build up to that over time, so hopefully I wouldn't have gotten in the plane to begin with.

It is so not worth it.

Some people at my DZ have a very high tolerance for wind though. Before coming here, I'd never seen people keep jumping when it's over 30pmh and/or really gusty but it happens a lot here.

    No thanks! I'll pass!

  6. There's nothing within walking distance where I am. We live in the boonies.

But I did switch employers recently and one of the reasons was I wanted a much shorter commute! (saves me time and LOTS of money...I was spending over 300 bucks a month on gas before, ugh)

  7. Thanks for the info. You poor thing! I can't imagine dealing with allergies for that long. I never had them at all until about 5 years ago. (and they've only been severe recently) Maybe the shots are a good long-term solution for me! Or moving to the arctic or the desert. :P I've been thinking about seeing an allergist...I will do some research as you suggested.

Forgot to say that zyrtec, claritin etc will work for a little while when I first start taking them, but after several days they don't seem to help anymore.

I just took a Benedryl. It probably won't help much, but maybe it will help me sleep tonight! I really need some solid sleep.

    happythoughts: cute. lol

skybeergold: I don't know if I've tried the "D" ones...I didn't realize there were two types of Claritin and Zyrtec. The ones I have at the house right now don't say "D" on them. You've had luck with those? edit: Oh, ok, the Zyrtec "D" has pseudoephedrine in it too. I've tried some generic drugs with that in it. Didn't help too much.

  8. So what should I try next?

Yesterday I took two Claritin, a Zyrtec and a Benadryl and I still couldn't breathe through my nose. (they were taken at various times during the day...not all at once!) I did make one jump in the morning but my head just about exploded so I had to stop.

This sucks. I'm constantly blowing my nose, my throat hurts, head hurts and I can't sleep because I'm so congested. I was up at all hours last night. Laying down seems to make the congestion worse but I can't sleep sitting up!

I'm in Texas. I had allergies for a little while in FL but back then one Zyrtec a day did the trick. Not here!

    [:/]

So any ideas on what else to try?? Anyone here get allergy shots? Do they work better than the oral medications?

By the way, I'm not keeping the windows open in the house and I'm avoiding yard work. Trying to keep my exposure down. It's so nice out today though. Dangit.

Damn this Kansas wind. Unjumpable Saturday and Sunday was supposed to be funjumper day as they were going to train new pilot but winds didn't come down until 5pm.

Nasty winds in Dallas too...I only made one jump. Strong and squirrely winds. They were hitting 36 when I left on Sunday!

Some people will keep jumping up to 30mph but not this kid!

  10. Reviving this old thread since I've been on a crock pot kick lately!

Tried this recipe recently and it turned out great:

    http://www.crock-pot.com/recipedetail.aspx?recipeid=570

I used country-style ribs, doubled the sauce since I had a lot of meat, threw some baby carrots in about halfway through (or else they'd get mushy), didn't use celery since I didn't have any, and substituted some of the red wine with worcestershire sauce instead so it wouldn't get too winey. I think the worcestershire sauce made a big difference! Just enough red wine taste, not overpowering.

The meat was just falling apart....Great with wild rice! Fantastic as leftovers the next day too.

Also, today I made up the following:

    pulled pork with tortillas

    4 pork chops
    garlic
    salt
    fresh ground pepper
ancho chile pepper (McCormack's brand from the grocery store works)
    cumin
    oregano
apple cider vinegar (a few splashes)
10 oz can of diced tomatoes with green chile peppers (and/or some bottled salsa)
    low salt beef broth

I lightly browned the pork on the stove with a little salt and pepper, and bit of veg or olive oil (I sometimes just throw it in the crock pot without browning, but I had time today...couldn't jump!)

Throw the pork into the crock pot on low with all the spices, apple cider vinegar, tomatoes/salsa and beef broth. Not that much broth. Maybe around a 1/4-1/2 cup? Cooked it on low for about 6-7 hours.

Shred the meat, toss it back in the pot for a little bit, then serve it with lettuce, cheese, salsa, beans etc, whatever you like, with corn tortillas. I usually make my own tortillas but I was lazy this time around. (I'm a corn tortilla girl rather than flour but everyone is different)

Crock-pot cooking is pretty fool proof. Take whatever spices you happen to have and it will probably work!

I never really have luck with rice in the crock pot though. So if I ever want rice for a crock-pot meal I just throw some on the stove about a half hour before I want to eat. Stove-top rice always comes out better for me. (potatoes in the crock pot turn out fine though. hmm)

    Okay, just thought I'd share!
