In fact they are told not to show up if they are hung over. They understand that, and it doesn't cause any problems.

I would think the problem it would create is that you would be short of staff for the day. And if you have a lot of tandems booked, then you may not get them all jumped. And that equates to a loss of income for the drop zone and unhappy customers. You don't see all of that as a problem?

I've been trying to find some stores in Toronto/Vaughan/North York that sell skydiving gear but I can't seem to succeed.

Did you try Wa-mart? They have a small skydiving area, but it's hidden way in a back corner of the sporting goods section. Just ask a clerk for directions, and they'll be able to show you to it.

  4. What the heck are you talking about? By "wing" do you mean wingsuit, or canopy? If canopy, then the glide ratio is much better than 1:1. They may advertise a "glide ratio". You're an engineer - you should understand that "1:1" is incorrect in the context in which you used it.

People dieing attempting dumb things is not bad? Please explain.

For someone like me to try it. It would be called suicide. For those that actually have the skills? It's their choice to make. They know the risks just as well as we do.

Right. Therefore you can't make a blanket statement that pushing the envelope is a good thing. It depends upon who is doing the pushing and whether or not they are properly prepared to do so.

Is it a good idea for a 16-year old teenage male to push the envelope by driving 100 mph with his new learner's permit?

I know nothing about skydiving. I am planning on getting a go pro camera, there shouldn't be any problems attaching it to that helmet right?

Do those two sentences seem to go together properly to you?

I voted that it is pushing the envelop, but I do NOT think that is necessarily a bad thing. Humans finding ways to do anything we never thought we could is rarely a bad thing, in my opinion.

If that's far less likely to happen on low-performance canopies, it would reduce (some of) my concern.

"Low performance" in this case means both a lower wing-loading, and a lower aspect ratio. Read up on "aspect ratio". Wide skinny tapered wings are more likely to go crazy than more blocky rectangular wings.

And don't think that "low performance" canopies are any kind of guarantee against scary malfunctions. They aren't. Malfunctions can happen to any canopy at any time. And if you jump long enough, it WILL happen sooner or later. So you should have the mental mindset to be able to handle that. If you don't, you shouldn't get involved in this sport.

  9. Obama's 'missing year' at Columbia found?

Two separate database reports from the National Student Clearinghouse have contradicted President Obama’s claim he attended Columbia University for two years. The reports have added to the intrigue generated by Obama’s unwillingness to discuss his time at the Ivy League institution, his refusal to release educational records, and the fact that many political science students and faculty there in the early 1980s say they don’t remember him...

Unlike previous presidents, Obama has refused to release any transcripts or other documentation regarding his education, going back to Kindergarten...

    http://www.wnd.com/2012/07/record-shows-obama-at-columbia-only-1-year/

Why do these things keep happening to Obama?

Maybe if he would just release his records, it would clear up all this confusion. Or does he have something to hide?

Blacks today have not benefited by America becoming free and independent?

Black people eventually benefited by America becoming free and independent.

Right. So why should black people today not celebrate that?

  11. Blacks today have not benefited by America becoming free and independent?

Should blacks also ignore Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, because that wasn't part of their ancerstor's culture back in the 1700's as slaves?

    Happy white-people's Thanksgiving Day!
    Happy white-people's Christmas Day!

If they want to eschew all modern holidays because of what happened 200 years ago, then they're living in the past, ignoring the reality of the present, and continue to live as "victims" despite that reality. And they continue to divide America instead of being a part of it.

Hey, how about Happy black-people Kwanza Day! Yeah, I guess if it's good enough for them, then we can play the same game in reverse, right? Maybe he should publish a calender that omits any mention of those darned white people holidays, and see how many sell.

  12. You boys seem to like your gun stuff. Saw an advertisement on TV for Denny's restaurant in which they tout the 2nd Amendment as one of the great things about America. They make a pretty good eggs benedict too. So I went fishing for an online copy of their ad, and here it is: http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/node/8420 Obviously pandering to right wing gun nuts. Me, I like right wing gun nuts. Left wing gun nuts too. And eggs benedict.

Yeah, this is pretty interesting. The Otter is obviously a very durable airframe. It would also be interesting to see a side by side comparison against the rest of the aircraft industry.

Well, the Otter is also sort of a bush aircraft, used in a lot of extreme conditions, operated off of short rough fields, and so on. Compared to most aircraft which only fly when the weather is good and off of long, improved airfields. So that probably makes the Otter more likely to be crashed than more pampered aircraft. And it wouldn't be because the Otter is built any less rugged, but simply because of the ways and environments in which it is used.

Except it has nothing to do with where a person is born

Correct. They're issued based upon where you live at the time you apply for one. And that could be in your teen years when you need the SSN so you can get a job, file a W2, and start earning money.

But Obama doesn't have any history of living in Connecticut...

It's mighty odd how all these strange "mistakes" keep happening in his records.

Maybe it's just a "composite" SSN, like the characters in his book which he invented, and put forth as being real.

I wonder what we would see if he ever released his college transcripts?
