  1. I don't like paying the higher prices any more than anyone else but you can get it. In the gas crunch of the 70s it wasn't available sometimes and for over a year our DZ limited altitude to 6500 ft because avgas was so hard to get. It wasn't availabe to our DZ and we chained a 1000gal tank on an old farm truck and drove 400+ miles round trip to get it. Probably illegal as hell but it kept us in the air.
Upside was the RW folks got pretty quick.

good to see more guys like you around. Most people I know give the whole its a business routine and ask ridiculous amounts for pack jobs and such. Good manB|

I'm not sure how much you are paying for a pack job, but how much is your butt worth? It takes a good hour to do a repack and there are other considerations that most people don't know about that a rigger has to keep track of to be legal. Then there are some rigs that are worth more than the going rate because they are a PITA.
I encourage anyone that thinks a repack is to expensive to get their rating. If nothing else you learn a lot about gear. I have several riggers that I taught that don't pack their own stuff, or anyone else's. We aren't getting rich I can asure you:S

This used to be a Cessna 180, out of which many jumps were made, until it was taxied into railroad ties surrounding a fuel pump, nosed down, and burst into flames. (The pilot walked away.)

(N numbers thinly disguised to protect the embarrassed.:P)

    Oh the humanity! :(:(:(:(
Sad ending for a fine old bird.

Ain't that the truth!!! Flying a C-180 is like going back to the womb. Got a bunch of hours and jumps in those birds.

  4. I had to do the up front for mine in 85 and didn't like it a bit. And as it turned out had to do it twice since we were short some one for one of the other guys.
I was surprized how eager some of the experienced jumpers were to do it for us that needed to get recurrent after the winter. I usually asked one of the light weight good looking girls.

Very cool indeed, Tonto - makes you realise how fortunate new jumpers are today with the modern equipment and training available. I started jumping at Bloemfontein Skydiving Club in 1979, lowest "D" in my logbook is D 181, Staf Du Plessis from 1 Parachute Batallion. Those were the days when toothpaste was still white ...

    Peter Haley .

Peter, do I know you? I was the rigger at Sky Sports in 82 & 83. Used to jump at Pretoria and Klerksdorp. Your name sure sounds familiar.

  6. I don't think that any of us can understand another persons demons. What makes it more strange is that I don't think that I have met a more up beat person than Kevin. He always had a smile and good word for everyone. Whenever he was on a load that I was flying he ALWAYS said thanks for the ride as he was climbing out.
Kevin had a lot of friends it is a shame that he didn't fall back on them in his time of need. They are without a doubt the best therapists going, or at least that is the way it works for me.
As one of Kevin's friends pointed out suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. There aren't to many problems that a good friend can't make better by just listening.

Ain't that the truth!!! 2500 round jumps mostly shooting down wind accuracy have taken there toll. Both knees and my back remind me every morning. Ahhh to be indestructable again like the NFGs.

  8. [They may be old fashioned technology but radials are very cool. Just to stir up trouble with the other pilots, what would you rather fly a Super Cub or a Cirrus.

Yeah I thought so.See ya at the grass strip.

For flying the Super Cub for getting somewhere in a hurry the Cirrus, although an RV taildragger might be a good ride.

P-51 Mustang!!!!!! But the Corsair is second in looks and performance.

Roger that!!!! I have one of those on my list as soon as my lottery ticket comes in. Closest I've come is a little time (damn little) in an AT6. As I remember it was a nice ride, especially since I wasn't picking up the fuel bill. 60+ GPH.

Kind of partial to the DHC-2 Beaver myself.

Now I have jumped one of those. I loved that aircraft :(

That one has one of those funny turbine engines though. You can't get the full effect of the torque with those.

  • I thought that the towed jumper in Masters of the Sky was Gary Patmor as well. I think that we still have a copy around the DZ, I'll check it out if I remember and can find it.

I know, its just that there's a village 0.5 miles west of our DZ that we aren't allowed to fly over at either 1300 or 13000 feet.
I don't know if its the sound of the aircraft or the thought of people falling above them that they have a problem with.

Unless it is a TFR they can't restrict your flying over it. There is a restriction for exiting over a densely populated area. The DZ might be avoiding it for good relations reasons.

  • Billy hit the nail on the head. All of the shows that I've been listening to the fans have been calling for Tubby"s head on a silver platter. I wouldn't put up with that, and get paid more to go to less preassure. DUH! Hell if he wins the same number of games he has been winning at UK they will build an arena and name it after him.
Now the UK fans have 5 to 10 years of rebuilding to look forward to. They will be lucky to see the NCAA Tourny let alone get to the final 4.
What most of the fans have overlooked is that there is much more competition for the good players. That along with the NCAA watching for $100 hand shakes and recruiting violations it is tougher to put together a Dynasty like UK used to have. And it's not only UK, just think of the last time a school has just dominated year in and year out like they used to.

I'll take the hug though Lady Flyer. See you this weekend.

I ended up buying one of those today. I put 100rds through it and I like it so far, but I've got alot more practice to do with it.

Practice what you will do, that is what over comes stress. No different than what you do in skydiving by dirt diving or practicing reserve procedures. The fact that you deal with adrenaline on a regular basis gives you a slight edge in a stressful situation, but you do what you practice.

  • I came down on orders to go with the 5th Mech Inf in 68 but only had 93 days left at the time so was passed over. Wasn't a lot of incentive to re-enlist, although I told them if they would guarantee me a year on the Knights that I would re-enlist. They said that they couldn't do that so I left to go back to making 400 jumps a year instead of 100.
Yeh we found lots of uses for military items especially after a few beers. I'm sure Air Cav might have had similar experiences except he was in country.
I use to run a DZ near Ft Campbell and the Warrants he brought out to learn to jump were a pretty rowdy bunch when alcohol was involved, all fresh back from Nam. Couldn't think of a better bunch of guys to go to war with though.

  • I have done all 3, but then I used to manufacture equipment. The reserve and harness have to be TSOed to be legal from and airplane. Not practical for an individual. Building your own main is possible but if you don't understand some of the dynamics of the fabric it can be very frustrating. Also sewing the Z-po fabric can be a challenge, to say the least.
I'm not trying to discourage you, by all means give it a try if that rings your bell. As others have pointed out learn to rig first and go from there. The more you know about your gear the better off you will be.

  • Kel-Tec .380 small enough to hide in you hand. Get the hottest ammo you can find. If you need it screw it in their ear and pull the trigger. A 45 is much more effective but not always practical.
Oh yeh practice with it every now and then.

I jumped there '72-'73 and have some pics from then. Trained by Jim McIntire...era of Billy Gifford, Francis McCauley, Johnny Crews, Bob Holt, Dennis Young, Myron Irwin, Liz Lurie, Phil Caputo, Joe Baker, Dave Gallagher, Deke Ahle, and of course Mike Schultz.

There are a bunch of names I haven't seen in a bunch of years. Only jumped at Pelican Land once, at a Team Accuracy Meet Thanksgiving weekend 1970, I think. They had an oyster roast Sat. nite but the sheet metal was so hot that it turned the oysters into cinders in a shell. It was a good time anyway, there was lots of beer.

  • What were they charging for a balloon jump out there?
I'm trying to generate a little interest among some of the pilots here. It would be a lot easier if we had 2 or 3 balloons.;)

  • Thanks Boz...I missed you too!;) Hmm...A case for the safety meeting, sounds like a good idea. :D

Be nice now, You don't have a balloon jump yet!

  • Don't forget your case of beer for the first jump back after going to Eloy for the first time.
Weekend after this one will work nicely.
