  1. It's odd that you'd phrase this question, "presuming heaven exists," then give people an option to vote that heaven does not exist. But OK, your poll, your rules. MHO is that a kind and loving god would not condemn a good person to eternal hellfire and torment, simply because that person did not believe in a system based purely on faith and not evidence. In other words, yes.

All doubt and uncertainty ended for those raptured.

Like Wendy, not trying to trap you. Just asking. I thought you and your friends and family and congregation were 100% convinced. What's up with the "doubt and uncertainty"? Do you have any of that?

Was there another time when a foreign country interfered with our election? I really don't know. Can you point out another time when this happened? I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, just asking.

    None that I know of.

My point had nothing to with the past howerver. My point is the left is in so much denial over the election. Russian interference (if there really was any) would just help them continue to try and de-legitimize a Trump presidency.

You know there has to be some other reason than Hillary jost lost to a.better candidate. No.way. Cause any thinking person would not vote.for Trump normally. So it had to be the Russuians!

This appears to be all political to me at this piont anyway.

The presidential election is about politics? Who knew? ;)

Look, I'm a progressive liberal, and I'm not in denial about anything. Trump won. From my point of view, that sucks, but there's nothing to do but move forward. I think the Ruskies probably did throw a bit of a monkey wrench into things, but we've done this lots of times to other countries. And crying about it won't help. The Dem's just need to find a better candidate next time.

I think this may be the first time in history that a foreign country has swayed a US election to their preferred candidate.

You are either a blathering idiot to believe this propaganda from your beloved MSM without demanding a shred of evidence to back up the claims, or you are one world class lying sack of shit.

Go ahead and ban me. You think I care?

However while you are reaching for the ban button, watch the video of a press conference below (watch the whole thing) and then come back and tell everyone else with a straight face that your hero Obama, the Clintons, the US government, the CIA and your beloved MSM is telling the American people the truth.

Syria - Sovereignty and Peace. Press Conference, United Nations from Dec 9th 2016

So what is it? Are you a blathering idiot, or a lying sack of shit?

Take it easy. He may be right. It might be the first time a foreign country has swayed our elections. But, as I outlined above, we have clearly done this to other countries. So, in that sense, he's mistaken. It happens. He's neither a blathering idiot or a lying sack of shit, he just made a mistake. Crissake, relax.

  6. gowlerk

Ummmmm.....I'm guessing the good old USA has attempted this many times in other countries.

I'm not a Trump fan. But I have no doubt we have done this before to other countries. The election in South Vietnam in 1971 was the first one off the top of my head.

Even the Huffington Post concedes we have been doing this in Latin America like forever.

Did the Ruskies meddle in this election? Probably. Did it help Trump? Of course. Do the Democrats (I am one) have anything to complain about. Um, no.

Yes, very nice distraction and piece of media manipulation. WaPo just buys right in. Trumped again.

    Winner winner chicken dinner.

It took me a while to figure out this guy's game, but I think I've finally got it.

    1. Make a ridiculous statement or tweet something crazy. Make sure it is something that will fire up the base. This one is perfect. We hate flag burners! Flag burners are hippies and communists! Strip their citizenship and throw them in jail!

    2. The right-wing base loves it.

    3. The left-wing freaks out and directs all sorts of attention to a silly comment Trump probably doesn't even believe. The left wing takes more shots at Trump.

    4. Trump now has the opportunity to act like he's been unfairly targeted by the elite left-wing whoever's.

    5. The right-wing base rallies even closer around Trump, because he's been attacked again by those horrible elite media types.

    6. In all the noise and confusion, everyone forgets about the very real problems the Trump administration is already having.

    7. In the end, Trump controls the message, the reaction to the message, the reaction to the reaction to the message, and he wins again.

Whatever your beliefs about the man (I am not a fan), this is masterful politics.

    ******That's not "current politics."

Most of that is neo-nazi nut jobs. I'll admit there is a section of the traditional political sphere which has been taken over by that, but it in no way even represents most of the Republican party.

Um, have you seen who the Republican nominee for president is?

He wasn't nominated by the majority of the Republican party. I know! Weird huh!

Weird isn't the word I'd use to describe his nomination, but you can choose whatever word suits you.

***well, it would seem from the audio that the guy chewing him out is 'in charge' of what is going on... "Go home, Get off this fucking bridge..." etc

So if you are in charge of, or at least participating in, what looks like at least some semi-organized thing going on involving many people....how it is that this guy managed to get over the railing without someone else (perhaps someone in charge) giving him a gear check on a base jump?

Appears there were many 'brain dead' people there that day, not just that guy.

    From the guy "in charge":

    Chris "Douggs" McDougall

Just for the record...... This muppet with no leg straps on was NOT one of my students!! I was looking after ten other people perfectly fine and this dick he'd just showed up!! He was one second away from jumping when I caught the mistake. He was NOT one of my students. On headings for me tomorrow. I will release my video angle when I get a chance!! ❤️ triple check your gear everyone!! 💥

I don't know anyone involved in this, and I'm not a base jumper. I'd just like to say my hat's off to Chris for saving a life here. As to the negative the stuff in this thread, it's best to just ignore it. It's just toxic garbage.

  11. Maybe the latest scientific studies show that fish don't feel pain like humans do. I haven't done the research, so I'll have to take your word for it. That's only one part of the question, though. Surely we'd have to agree that the fish are undergoing some types of stress or discomfort when they are hooked and hauled up to the surface. Is it OK to subject an animal to that stress just so human beings can have fun? And what about the killing? Is it OK to kill an animal and mount it on the wall for sport? I just think that these are the types of questions that we should be asking about hunting and fishing. It would clearly be hypocritical of me to take a firm stance against hunting and fishing, so I won't do that. I do think that this a conversation worth having, though. And the sailfish stays on the wall. :)

  12. Yes, that study was the first thing that popped up when I Googled "fish" and "pain." If you scroll down a bit there are other studies that come to other conclusions.

"Fishing may not seem like such a relaxing sport anymore, as scientists claim to have found that fish feel pain, just like humans.

One researcher believes fish have the same intelligence as other animals and consequently, people should care more for their welfare.

Flying in the face of what is considered popular opinion, he added fish have good memories and exhibit behaviour seen in primates, such as building complicated structures like specially-shaped sandcastles, as well as using tools."

I don't know whether either study is correct, and I'm not arguing for either position. It seems like an unsettled question.

***Here's my question -- is fishing any different?

I suppose one has to question whether or not fish know what pain is? Do they have the mental capacity to suffer?

I don't know. I'm guessing it hurts to get a sharp piece of metal jammed through their mouths and hauled to the surface. You could make a reasonable argument that even catch and release fishing is just cruelty for the sake of sport. And, as another poster accurately stated, catch and release done sloppily just kills the fish more slowly.

  14. billvon

But we generally place more value on animals we relate to. Dogs are social and relate well to people, and have emotions and reactions that we share. So we have a visceral reaction to seeing someone killing a dog for no good reason, because we can put ourselves either in the place of the dog or the place of someone who loves the dog. (In fact, we're wired to do this.) Lions and giraffes evoke a similar (perhaps not as strong) level of kinship. And now that we know that chimpanzees and dolphins are closer to us in terms of intelligence than we once thought, we often have similar reactions to people killing those animals.

This seems right to me. You could, though, make a pretty fair argument that killing any sort of animals for sport is wrong. Yet the sailfish remains on my wall....

  15. I'm just throwing this out here for the heck of it. I admit that I have a negative, visceral reaction to these types of animals being killed for sport. So I get where you are coming from. Here's my question -- is fishing any different? When I was younger, I went fishing a lot, mostly with my dad. We caught lots of fish. I'd guess about 95% went back in the water. The rest we'd eat. I have kept a couple of trophy fish. I caught a nice sailfish many years ago in Acapulco and had it mounted. It's still on the basement wall. I caught a nice sized northern pike and had it mounted as well. My dad caught a big barracuda off Key West and we had that mounted too. I've still got a photo of me with the sailfish. Does that make me a horrible person? And why would I have that negative reaction to hunters when I've got that sailfish on my wall? Maybe it's because mammals seem closer to humans than fish. Maybe I'm being irrational about hunters. I dunno where I'm going with this. But every time there's a Cecil the lion or a 12 year old with a dead giraffe, I end up with a whole bunch of mixed feelings. If anyone wants to offer any armchair psychology, or just beat me up for killing the sailfish and the northern pike, feel free. :)

It just seems quite in line with the rape culture we're discussing.
Your explanation of how tough it is to be a convicted rapist sounds almost sympathetic.
To me, those are exactly what a rapist deserves, much like the legal system and most citizens appear to feel as well. Maybe that's why the sex offender requirements were created? Maybe why the harsh prison sentence is the norm, not the exception?

Again, fuck that guy. Hey took something from that woman that will fuck with her for the rest of her life. Why are so many dismissing THAT?

Fuck that guy. He deserves a much harsher sentence.
I sincerely hope his life is fucked.

I hope everyone reads her letter.

I read the victim impact statement. It was eloquent and powerful. I hope this young lady is able to heal as well as possible and move forward with her life. That's the most important thing about this terrible incident. I should have made that clear in my first post here. My bad for not doing that.

Turner's life is sincerely fucked. That's what I was trying to point out in my original post. And I'll concede that he probably should have gotten a longer term of incarceration.

You've accused me twice of being part of a "rape culture." I'm asking you nicely now to knock it off. That's not who I am, and you have no basis for making that accusation.
