  1. Hey everyone!!!

I have narrowed down my choices of new canopy between a 99 crossfire 2 or 99 Neos.

Looking to demo both, most specifically the Neos. Other people at my dz have crossfires.

    Has anyone tried http://democanopy.com

    Would you recommend them

    Thanks!

  2. Hey Daniel,

    Thanks for the reply.

Been so long since i posted, forgot to mention some stuff.

My weight is 163 lbs (it) + 20 lbs gear so my loading on the 120 storm is a bit above 1.5

I have taken one canopy course and plan on taking one with alter ego in z hills in the winter.
Approaches are 90 with fronts and planing out with rears and finishing with toggles.

I have initiated a few 270 s but feel as thought the storm is not the right canopy for said maneuvers.

I do anywhere between 10- 20 jumps a weekend. Tandems, video or wingsuit/ tracking. Will be keeping the storm for the wing suiting.

I do have some real good swoopers at my dz. Everyone was telling me to go crossfire but the most experienced guy thinks i should get a 99 neos.

I figured i would throw out some feelers out here as part of my research

    cheers

  3. Hey all!

I am planning on downsizing. Thinking of either getting a CF2 or Neos.

I have been getting mixed reviews from everyone. On one hand I hear the CF is an excellent canopy to learn, dial in swoop skills but then some very experienced swoopers also told me that a Neos would be better because is has a longer recovery arc then a CF and is semi cross braced.

A little bit about me. I have 1200 jumps + 300 Base, TI, D license, Instructor rating, videographer. Coming in with my present canopy pretty quickly. Recovery Arc is pretty short because its a 7 cell 120 storm. Never thought i would start swooping in but i guess thats what happens after years of shooting tandems!!!

Canopy progression has been 155 monarch, 135 sabre, 135 sabre 2, Storm 120. I have tried stilettos, CF, Safires and Katanas.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!!!

Not going to work but to train.

In regards to Tj, is that his home dz. Does he do one on one coaching or anything like that?

    Thx for the help boys

Call me a n00b, but I haven't seen any moderator actions that weren't justified... Personal attacks and naming of sites is just plain uncool.

Personally, if stuff is happening that you're having issue with, I'd rather that it be talked about directly rather than sly and vague references be made.

Sure....you exercise piece of mind and you get shut down or people start going crazy. In addition, moderators and other moderator disciples will be on your ass.

Take care, jump more, post less!

  9. pretty kick ass forum. No banning and biases (we all know what I mean).

in reality, why are a bunch of base jumpers on a skydiving forum...ruled through dictatorship......doesn't make sense!

  11. I agree 100%. Well said.

I know damn well Tom won't put this as a sticky but I do think the article itself should be. It surely wouldn't hurt anything!

Your lack of a reply or slow reply makes me think you should!

    If yes...thank you

  13. 1) Of course it cannot be guaranteed that a toggle will not be missed. It's BASE jumping...I don't think anyone is or ever was in a position to guarantee anything. Things happen. A bad throw, a lazy throw, a bridle wrap, a missed toggle, a missed riser...no one is 100 % consistent.

    2) Again...the goal is not to say which is better (defending your opinion on toggles or risers)...simply to show what can be done.

If someone does not possess the skills they probably shoudln't use these maneuvers as their plan A. But given the right circumstance (i.e. training at the Prine)...they can train and like I said....aspire to be that quick and eventually become that quick!

    Joe

"we can either clmib down...or take the 15 second express shuttle" ---- during a snow storm on a 1000 foot antenna

  14. 1) I am aware that a lot of people have different opinions on the subject. I already have an opinion....hence my post! I am not a toggle guy or a riser guy. The goal is not to pick risers over toggles or vice versa...simply to show people what is possible.

My opinion is that both toggles and risers can be usefull depending on the situation. By showing this info it lets people form their own opininons instead of hearing the same things over and over again.

    2) I have seen the video of that particular accident numerous times. Again....the goal is not to pick one over the other. Nonetheless, a riser can be missed just like a toggle.

3)The other video "toggle training" contains slider down jumps. I believe they speak for themselves...

4)the wind conditions in the toggle training video were extremely minimal (if any).

  15. The topic of using toggles instead of risers has risen yet again due to a recent injury last year at Bridge Day mentioned in this thread http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2698655;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread

Also, there is video now posted on the internet of toggles being used which show how effective they can be.

The titles of the 2 videos are:
    "Toggle Heading Correction During Opening"
    "Toggle Training"

Here is a link for the videos:

I went through Johnny Utah's BASE Camp and was taught to start out using my risers. I was also taught after having acquired plenty of riser experience, at some point I may want to consider training myself on using my toggles for heading correction. Johnny explained to us the advantages and disadvantages of both toggle and riser use during our BASE Camp. Here is an article that explains in detail the pros and cons of using toggles or risers.

    http://www.johnnyutah.com/risersortoggles.html

p.s Tom, can you please make this a sticky? As someone who has been BASE jumping for nine months, I believe this information to be invaluable for new jumpers who come through this forum.

  16. I emailed Johhny Utah and asked him to put video of what he was doing during BASE Camp. These videos demonstrate how the use of toggles can minimize forward movement during and after opening while doing a heading correction.

These videos also show how quickly the canopy can be turned with minimal altitude loss with the use of toggles.

  17. Almost every time heading needs to be corrected, I have done the maneuver I described.

Furthermore...Myself and some friends have seen it done as well. Video is available.

Of course you may have some drive at first in between the time you grab your toggles or risers. I guess if we are gonna be picky, then forward drive isn't fully eliminated....if you're too slow!

FINAL NOTE: IF YOU ARE FAST ENOUGH ON YOUR TOGGLES AND ARE DIALED IN ....FORWARD DRIVE WILL NOT EXIST ANYMORE THEN IF YOU WERE USING YOUR RISERS!

Videos on my mentors site probably show it and I have some of my jumps on camera which show it as well.

    take care

I would say the first one (which is commonly implied when one speaks of "faster") is of no importance. The second two are crucial. If there was a way I could turn my canopy with zero forward speed and not losing any altitude, except it would take thirty minutes; I would obviously prefer that.

I was taught to pull both risers or toggles (depending in wether or not you are a toggle or riser person) down which will stop the canopy. thereafter you snap one arm down and the other one up (depending on which way you want to turn).

When executing this you will eliminate forward drive. Therefore it is very possible!

I am a riser guy at the moment but I am training to be on toggles primarily. Once you are fast enough and confident on your toggles...I believe they are the better option!

I didn't get busted up because of my opinion of the height. I got busted up because of the altitude lost in a rear riser turn avoiding the pillar I would have otherwise smashed into. And a few of the luck factors that didn't play into my favor.

After months of reflection, the other factor that played a big part in my injury was trying to get to the only landing area I had evaluated rather than having suitable alternates in the event of whatever might happen.

I think another isuue with this object and the perceieved differences in height have to do with the landing area. My 240' measurement, with a laser, was to impact. In the possible landing area there is a hill, train tracks, a river, a path, ditches on the side of the path, etc. With all these things considered it is a pretty challenging object to FF and have to deal with heading performance and deployment hesitations.

BTW, I will be headed to potatoe land next week for my first jumps back from the injury. I think my biggest challenge will be hiking out. I still have quite a bit of pain.

    Hey Tony

I'm bringing this post back cause it brings me back to a story I heard in Base Camp w/ Johnny Utah.

You might find this article usefull. The 1st story at the end of the article relates to yours b/c it was the same object

    Quote

There was this one day where I was doing some flicking with Mad Dog and as luck would have it, I had an off-heading and found myself facing a concrete pillar. For whatever reason I went for my risers. As I started to turn the canopy with my risers I instantly felt that it was not going to be a good outcome. The pillar flares out as it goes down, as they often do. The necessary input I needed to do with the risers to keep from hitting the pillar very possibly would have caused me to sink into the pillar where it flares out. I realized this in a fraction of a second and in my head I thought screw this and dropped the risers, grabbed my toggles and turned the canopy very quickly away from the pillar. Because I did not lose much altitude in the turn I was still able to land on my feet within a bunch of ugliness.
