you could spray paint "I BASE THIS B" all over the place, and for one, most people wouldnt even understand what that means..

No, but they'd understand that someone who wasn't supposed to be there had been. On a job-site, you have to imagine the workers might be a little pissed, what with all their equipment on site and theft being a bit of a problem for them.

and second, who would believe it? some writing on the wall that says you used a magic backpack to commit suicide from the edge for fun? on drugs?
    far out man... far out..

Maybe the local cops who get told about "crazy folks jumpin' off dem buildings wit' parachutes and shit" when they stop to harass the homeless. Not sure what it's like in NYC, but this has been confirmed in LA.

Still, the question that always comes back to me is "What is the point of graffiti, especially in BASE?"

By the way, how did you manage to spell "BASE Site" correctly?

I call Photoshop. ;) Not even Felonie...errrrr...Maggot is that unethical. :D

Those helicopters of yours are cool as hell.

Alright, now that we've seen the authorized stripper pics I feel secure enough in my manhood to ask for pics of those helicopters.

  4. Too bad about the Nazi Nurse, eh, Matt? I do want to know, though... Was she young enough to have joined in and maybe just a little shy? Awwww, fcuk it...looks like Kelly was enough for you to handle. Glad you enjoyed it.

Baz, I want to see the 'unauthorized' pics.

what will i bet you ask? collin´s life.

That's me. "Stunt Russel / Test Splatula".

Pains me to say it, but...Abbie's right. It was most likely the relative airspeed that had you thinking it took longer. D-bags be fast.

  6. That is just a sweet mother fcuking rig. You guys are REALLY pushing the envelope of human flight and innovation. Keep this shit up!

  7. I assume you're talking about packing slider down, correct?

If so, the most important thing to remember is that if it's packed down, it needs to stay down. So either slide the front-riser slider grommets below the rapide-links and stow/restrict the slider in place using the slider bumpers; or you can tie it down by threading a line through the bumpers and links and then into the front slider grommets. Then shift the knot into the slider bumper (I can post a picture of this some other time if what I'm saying isn't clear). You only need to do this for the front riser.

Otherwise, when placing the packjob and risers in the packtray, it's good to neaten the slider up a bit. I'm kind of a fan of the DexterBASE slider-origami and it really doesn't take that much more effort.
To reiterate what has been said already and will be said more...hopefully you have some locals around to help you, as well.

  8. Does anyone happen to know the cfm of fine mesh (nylon marquisette or high drag netting) used in pilot-chutes, fine-mesh sliders and vented BASE PCs? I expect it to be high, but am looking to relate this to the 0-3 cfm of F111 and just can't seem to find a figure.
    Thanks.

well we could drag both types behind a car and see who's arm gets ripped off first with the least wobble.

Better yet, I just got a motorcycle. We can test each PC by deploying off the back of it instead.

When you're isolated like we are in s.a. (with regard to base) you tend to build up a few preconcepts. Our knowledge base becomes inbred and we need some external input once in a whiie. It's good to get a bit of a wake to blow those things away.

That's true for all of us--regardless of the geography--and conversations like this spur new thoughts and education.

In that statement I was talking about the morpheus pc's. The mesh on the apex is way to dense, or thin and added to that is the placement of a morpheus logo on the apex. to me it just wouldn't work, although this is an opinion and i havn't seen anyone jump a morpheus av yet.

The purpose of a vented apex is to limit the oscillation of the PC by giving the air a place other than the sides of the PC topskin from which to escape. But in adding the vent, you compromise two things: snatch and drag. None of us want to compromise good snatch (and everyone knows Abbie loves to dress in drag).

In this, I actually happen to think that the fine mesh makes good sense. It's a little more restrictive than large-hole mesh and though I'm not sure of its cfm, it's definitely higher than the 0-3 of F111. With fine mesh, you're accomplishing the purpose of the vent, but not compromising the snatch and drag forces as much as you would with a large-hole mesh vent. Theoretically, this all makes sense in my head, but I'm sure there's a point of diminishing returns when it comes to the density of the fine mesh and that probably has a lot to do with the total surface area of the vents. Can't really comment on the apex patch/logo, but I don't think it really has too significant a negative impact.

  11. Ah...I see now. Sorry I read that wrong. Missed the context from the posts above.
Do you have a pic of a Morpheus PC w/ the patch on the apex? I'd like to see the layout of the vents around that patch...

Then the mesh used on their av's doesn't seem like it would have any effect at all, it's pretty much like using f111.

Would you mind elaborating on that? You are talking about the mesh used on the vent at the apex of the PC, right? I fail to understand how that mesh could not have an effect. It allows air to pass through the apex of the PC which is the whole intention.

Otherwise, I've never been anything but highly impressed w/ the quality of Asylum's gear. Did you raise these concerns to Martin? I've never been anything but impressed w/ his customer service, either.

I think you have your threads confused, Jason. This is the "Tony had a baby" thread, not the "Abbie moved in w/ Cheri and Tom Aiello".

For legal jumps, the more the merrier. That is, I have no problems sharing the excitement of a jump. I won't go out and actively invite tons of people, but I've run into hikers at the exit point and happily agreed they could watch. As long as the jump isn't overly sketchy, I don't see harm in showing that we're just ordinary people with an extra-ordinary passion.

The only thing I'd add to this is that I would tell them, up front, that if shit goes bad, it could likely go extremely bad and will do so VERY quickly.

  16. With just this basic info, I don't personally consider it a breach of ethics...or even call their ethics to question. I'd have to know more before I'd even go that route.

My personal opinion on the matter, however, is if someone doesn't really need to be there, why take them? If they're not GC, they're probably just a liability to the load. And if the object is hot...it's even more of a "why bother?"

  17. We build houses, engineer software, reasearch cancer, neutralize chemical and biological weapons, serve in the military, work retail, own businesses, cook (?) sushi, manufacture gear, tend bar, fight fires, save lives...it goes on.

In short, find something you truly want to do and you'll find a way to do it. Our mindsets may be somewhat different from the rest of the general populace, but otherwise you'll find all walks of life in BASE. Don't just look for a shortcut. Nothing in life is free. You have to work for what you want...especially BASE.
