  1. I'm a relatively new jumper, less than a year in the sport.

No Cypres - too poor. I plan on getting one asap.

Most of my jumps in Santa Barbara, CA.

I'm going for Silver at 1500 and below.

I've been low on two jumps that I remember specifically. I swear I saw people in cars. If an AC emergency occurs the last thing I want is a problem with my main. To me, my life is worth the freaking repack :P Nobody wants this to be their last trip to altitude...

  2. Question for you: If there aren't a large amount of people buying new containers why does it take some of the manufacturers (Velocity excluded) in excess of 3 months to build one? Honestly, I talked to a handful of mfr's when selecting mine, and every single one, again with the exception of Velocity, told me "sometime in early/mid 2004". I called in August of 2003.....

Not that I would have them *rush* through construction, lord knows I don't want that. but I mean really, if Velocity has their act together, and they turned out my rig in only 2 months why does Mirage need 6 months? I suppose their demand is higher, and one could argue many other points, but I find it hard to believe people are willing to wait half a year for a tye-dyed Mirage.

  3. I'm a relatively new jumper and I purchased a used Sabre 1 size 150 and loaded it at 1.1 - exactly what you are getting ready to do.

First, I would reccomend you sit down with a rigger, especially if you are buying used and have him/her look it over. (obviously)

As far as hard openings, I haven't had ONE. Learn to pack it correctly and give it a lot of love and it'll open everytime w/o trying to take your head off. I've heard a bunch of rants/raves about hard openings at DZ's. When these people see me jumping a Sabre 1 I normally have to listen to a 15-20 lecture on how a Sabre2 is so much nicer and how much Sabre1's suck. I just smile and keep on doing what I'm doing.

There are a bunch of ways to pack a Sabre that will minimize the opening impact, the one I use, and the one that seems to be repeated more often than not, is rolling the center cells toward the nose and taking special care with the slider and the tail. A Sabre1 is a 9 cell, so roll the first 4 cells toward the middle nice and tight and tuck em in. Do the same for the last 4 cells.

I would also reccomend you think about getting an enlarged slider (talk to that rigger). It's not an absolute, but I got one on my used Sabre and I think it helps.

So, as somebody who's done what you are getting ready to do, I say go for it. They're inexpensive, good learning canopies, and they still can give one hell of a ride. I don't claim to be an expert, but almost all my jumps are on Sabre1's.

  4. Good looking rigs all around. Here's a pic of my I-33. I love this rig. Slept with it for a few nights after it was delivered.

I was uploading some other pics tonight and came across these from the Holiday Boogie @ Elsinore, before the fire...The pictures are of a girl twirling "fire balls" and I slowed the shutter speed for added effect.

  5. Buy an Infinity from Velocity. I made an order in early August of this year and it showed up at the end of October. You can't beat them for the quality, cost, and delivery time. They're freefly safe, f***ing awesome looking, and all around an awesome rig. I can upload some pictures of my new container later tonight. I did custom colors and other options and it still only took a short period of time to get to my door (especially when you compare to others i.e. Sunpath - I've heard it can take a YEAR to get an Odyssey rig). If i had to do all over again I wouldn't change anything, well maybe I'd change when I ordered so it would have gotten here sooner!

Kelly you rock man, thanks for taking my many many calls requesting an "update" on my rig. I think by the time it was all over I had called often enough that you knew my voice.

My vote is definitely for Infinity, hands down, no reservations about their rigs at all.

  6. Oh No! I missed your Birthday at the DZ!!! Damnit!!!

Stupid work, stupid work, stupid stupid work. I missed your party because of work...what a lame excuse :(

I really like the thread though! Erik sent me the link and since work is work, I'm killing time :) For all the parties, for all the fun, for all the good times, and for all the great memories I'm toasting to you Taln1rigr. You definitely made Skydive SB a helluva dropzone to come and enjoy. You will be sorely missed!

I'm sure MileHigh isn't prepared for you ;) Lord knows Dave wasn't!!! :)

I'm thinking I should rush home and post the picture of you and that weird lookin French plane. :)

  7. I've recently been nailing out my Sit - Stand transitions (and vice-versa, which is more difficult by the way) and I'm interested in learning how to turn or spin the stand. I've noticed that I can fly stable in stand for quite sometime. If I do start to turn in the stand I'm unsure as to how to compensate and my only way out is slowly back into a sit.

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. If I had the money I'd pay for some freefly coaching, but well I don't have the cash :(

Oh and a general question: What's the fastest speed you've reached in a stand?

  8. I just finished placing an order for a new Infinity this week through my local Drop Zone - Skydive Santa Barbara. This is my first rig and I can't wait for it to show (10 week leadtime).

I sided with the Infinity for a couple of reasons - the riser protection, the cost, customizable color scheme, and *reputation*. My Rigger gave it a great review, and a friend has let me jump his Infinity more than a handful of times. In addition I heard great things about the rig while in Elsinore, CA during a recent weekend trip.

During the jumps with the friends Infinity (thanks Erik!) the rig felt awesome. I've packed it up and it closes great - no complaints at all. The rig looks sweet too, I'm thinking I'll probably sleep with it when it first shows up ;)

I actually called and talked to Kelly about the order and he seemed really cool, I know VSE is a smaller company but I have heard nothing but good things about the customer service and quality of the product.

    "Ad Infinitum..."

  9. Thanks Rob,

I learn something new everyday. I've got a master rigger at my local DZ that I've been talking to. Hopefully he should be able to inspect the harness for me.

Question: How expensive is the fix you are talking about on the main lift web?

  10. Hello I'm looking for some advice on buying a used container.

I'm 5'10", 145lbs and trying to find a container (well really an entire system) that will fit me well. I've jumped multiple containers in my short time, Telesis (student), Wings, Javelin, and Infinity and enjoyed the Infinity the most. I'm looking to get into freeflying and I really like the extra riser protection with the integrated reserve flaps.

If I was looking at a used Infinity that was fitted for someone 6'1", 180 lbs would I be looking at a container too large for me? It seems the torso size (and perhaps the leg straps) may be incorrect for me. I know it holds the canopy size I want and am comfortable flying (main 150) so that's not really a question.

Any input on how much this *may* matter would be appreciated. Also if anyone has info on "resizing" containers, especially Infinity's I'd appreciate it. If I could buy this rig and then have a rigger make some mods to get it to fit a little bit better (shorten the leg straps??) that may be an option as well.
