RAINBOW SKYDIVERS TO HOLD WORLD'S ONLY GAY SKYDIVING EVENT, "RAINBOW BOOGIE 2010"

March 3, 2010 – The third annual Rainbow Boogie, an event promoting the sport of skydiving within and outside the GLBT community, will be held on August 26-29 at Skydive Cross Keys in Williamstown, NJ. The "boogie" -- a non-competitive, fun gathering of skydivers -- will consist of spectacular aerial feats and nighttime activities for both jumpers and spectators alike.

Experienced skydivers plan a world record attempt to build a 20-person "Gay Way" free fall formation, which would shatter the 12-person record set in 2009. In addition, a variety of jumps are planned for skydivers of all skill levels. Those interested in doing a first jump at the boogie can book a "tandem" skydive with a licensed instructor at Skydive Cross Keys.

The fun doesn't stop at sunset however, and this year's Saturday night party in the hangar will be no exception. Last year's celebration featured a DJ, crazy relay contests, Mardi-Gras style costumes and wildly colorful decorations. The festivities help foster unity and acceptance as gay and straight party goers mingle and celebrate the weekend’s achievements.

"Skydive Cross Keys is thrilled to host the Rainbow Boogie once again", said Liz Mann, promotions manager of the dropzone. "Our staff and regular jumpers really appreciated the level of energy and excitement the rainbow skydivers brought last year, and look forward to another very successful event."

The first Rainbow Boogie in 2006 was held at NouvelAir near Montreal and was promoted mainly by word-of-mouth. Kirsten Johnson, a medal-winning competitive skydiver, planned the first-ever Gay Way world record attempt. Mark Rejhon, a Canadian jumper and organizer of all three events, said "When I started skydiving in 2005, I never dreamed I would be organizing the world's first gay skydiving event."

After a brief hiatus, the boogie returned in 2009 to Cross Keys in help thanks to the growing global social networking community. The Rainbow Skydivers group on Facebook has grown to over 100 skydivers spanning numerous countries and seeks to promote skydiving as a sport that is inclusive to all.

Michael Gamble’s involvement began after discovering the Rainbow Skydivers community. "As a new skydiver, it was so much fun to join in with the group and feel warm, comfortable, and welcomed!"

Skydive Cross Keys is located a short drive from Philadelphia and is easily accessible from anywhere on the New Jersey I-95 corridor and via flights to airport code PHL. International visitors can conveniently visit nearby tourist destinations including Atlantic City as well as Washington D.C. and New York City via the high-speed Acela Express train.

Spectators are welcome, and participation in jumps is completely optional. Skydive Cross Keys offers fully-equipped training for first-time skydivers interested in a first jump with a licensed instructor. Dropzone facilities include a huge indoor carpeted parachute packing area, gear store, restaurant cafe, swoop pond, camping and trailer area, and large practice areas with new airplane mock-ups for training.

Unlock done, 4 months to the boogie!
The buzz is currently in the Facebook event page and a small bit on our twitter feed, but here's some mini-updates.

...Rainbow Boogie 2009 photo web page
...Facebook group for gay skydivers is located here
...We are expecting to have at least a couple of sponsor booths at the boogie, keep tuned
...We now have a fraternity style "flag banner" on the way, which we will put up at Perris when 6 of us show up for the Perris 50-ways (4 participants, 1 packer, 1 spouse)
...Cross Keys is looking into bringing in a second Twin Otter if the expected attendance keeps growing, we may even become among Cross Key's bigger annual boogies (because of all the enthusiac straight supporters), we are enthusiacally growing the boogie.
...We now currently the organizing skills needed for a 30-way / 40-way mixed gay/straight formation after the 20-way Gay Way World Record.
...We now have a carpool thread in the Discussion section of the Facebook page
...I've been networking. I have come to now know two gay DZO's, several gay AFFI's, gay sons/daughters of DZO's. There are more Rainbow Skydivers 'in the hiding' than expected, that I'm trying to invite out to the event, too.

And again, this event is 100% hetero friendly. Lots of the on-site organizing is being done by many enthusiac dropzone jumpers, including these straight girls (warning NSFW photo!)

New Information! For all the straight jumpers, there is also a concurrent skydiving event happening simultaneously too (not gay specific):

ASP - Advanced Skydive Project
- Sponsored by Aerodyne & NSL
- Organized by Karl and Cherie Schuch
- Up to 20-ways - Advanced RW
- For More Information [email protected]

I am now currently contacting Karl and Cherie, about merging our groups for a 40-way at the end of the day Saturday (after our Gay Way World Record Attempt).

This should also help lead to a pretty big hangar party this year. Those who have heard, even from straight friends at Skydive Cross Keys, have heard how entertaining that party was last year!

New text for the Facebook Event RSVP page:

...RAINBOW BOOGIE 2010...
The World's Only Gay Skydiving Event.
August 26 - 29, 2010 at Skydive Cross Keys. 100% Hetero-Friendly too!
/
...Photos?... Last year's Rainbow Boogie 2009 pics at http://bit.ly/9KrSL1
...First Jumps?... Yes!
...Skydiving Team?
Bring your 4-way or 8-way team! We already have a 8-way team with a gay member training at Skydive Cross Keys already! PLEASE JOIN US !!!!!!!!!

...How Big?
We now plan 2010 to realistically be one of the SECOND BIGGEST ANNUAL SKYDIVE EVENT at Skydive Cross Keys in 2009 -- next in size to the Independence Day boogie.

...Straight?
Many concurrent events are happening! Aerodyne and NSL is sponsoring a concurrent, separate event that runs at the same time as Rainbow Boogie, called the Advanced Skydive Project, which is a 20-way skydiving event during August 28-29. But please, stay for our Saturday party!

...New to Skydiving? Spectator?
Freefall Adventures offers fully-equipped training for first-time skydivers interested in a first jump with a licensed instructor. An Accelerated Freefall training program is available for those who want to proceed to get a skydiving license. Jumping is optional. Spectators are welcome too!

...What's Happening?
Lots! 20-way Gay Way World Record attempt is planned, to beat the 12-way record that was set in 2009. We even have gay U.S.P.A. coaches to keep newly licensed jumpers happy! We have smallway RW, Bigway RW, Freefly. First skydive, novice jumpers, advanced jumpers, load organizing, banquet, partying, mixed gay/straight skydives. Tiki bar, restaurant, decorations, dancing/DJ in the hangar, afterhours fun. Saturday features the usual boogie party atmosphere such as the optional underwear jump -- some of us volunteered last year, while others watched or closed eyes! -- And the sunset swoop-n-chug.

...Party?
Yes, we have our wild hangar party on the evening of Saturday, August 28, 2010. You heard the good buzz about the last year's party -- don't miss the SATURDAY NIGHT HANGAR FESTIVITIES. Saturday's the day/night to be if you can only attend for one day/night!

...Nervous?
Event is 100% Hetero-Friendly! All skydivers are welcome, Gay, lesbian, straight jumpers. Jumpers still "in the closet" can blend in anonymously with the straights, if need be! Cross Keys rolled out the red carpet for us in 2009 -- we are going back!

...Travel? Tourism? Nightlife? Bored Spouse?
Skydive Cross Keys is located a short drive from Philadelphia and is easily accessible from anywhere on the New Jersey I-95 corridor and via flights to airport code PHL only 20 minutes drive from Skydive Cross Keys. (Alternate airports within 3 hour drive include EWR, IAD, ACY, JFK if you're looking for cheaper airfares) International visitors can conveniently visit nearby tourist destinations including Atlantic City as well as Washington D.C. and New York City via the high-speed Acela Express train. Also a group of non-jumper spouses have plans to do some activities while their partners jump in the sky -- use that as an excuse to bring your spouse!

...Can't Get Away From Work?
You can come only for the weekend. Friday night to Sunday night. The big jump day and the big party night is Saturday, and is a MUST NOT MISS feature of Rainbow Boogie 2010. Or if you're a First Jumper, you can choose to visit on only one of the 4 days that this Rainbow Boogie is being held. And your spouse could come down only on the weekend if he/she can't get time off.

...Facilities?
The planes are two Super Otter (second one pending), a King Air, and a Porter! Dropzone facilities include a huge indoor carpeted parachute packing area, gear store, restaurant cafe, swoop pond, camping and trailer area, and large practice areas with new airplane mock-ups for training.

...Accomodations?
Best Western (skydiver discount) - 856-340-7900
Howard Johnson - 856-228-4040
Econo Lodge - (856) 262-8400
Red Carpet Inn - 856-768-5353
Or bring your trailer or tent!

http://facebook.com/group.php?gid=52708009938

We're preparing clips for Skydive TV, and we just put up our Rainbow Skydivers fraternity banner at Skydive Perris in our corner.

Not to mention, this year we've had a significant surge of new and returning Rainbow Skydivers, who have recently become interested in becoming skydiving -- just because of our boogie event! We are expecting approximately 10 newly A-licensed Rainbow Skydivers who have already contacted me about attending this event. Maybe one day, some year in the very near future, we hope we can beat the size of Independence Day -- at least when combined with a concurrent events intentionally scheduled on the same weekend!

Inventor of Skyventure Tunnel joins Rainbow Skydivers.

Link: http://bit.ly/RainbowSkydive001
Bill Kitchen is the original owner of SkyVenture and designer of the first tunnel in Orlando. Not only it is impressive that a fellow Rainbow Skydiver developed a popular skydiving training tool, he also invented the Skycoaster currently found at several amusement parks. I, Mark Rejhon, the main Rainbow Boogie organizer, flew in a Skycoaster in year 1996 (the Xtreme SkyFlyer at Canada's Wonderland). This Skycoaster ride made me decide to try my first tandem skydive in 1997! This is an amazing coincidence. Without Bill, I wouldn't be here organizing Rainbow Boogie!

Bill Kitchen also operates a thrill rides invention company, including Skyventure, Skycoaster, and Unicoaster. He has been out of the closet for 10 years, and lives in Orlando, Florida. You can read more about him at the following pages:

Are YOU a New Rainbow Skydiver? FAQ on First Jump.

Link: http://bit.ly/RainbowSkydive003
There are many new Rainbow Skydivers. Some who's looking to do a First Jump, and some who are newly licensed skydivers (Solo and A License). If you are looking to make a FIRST JUMP, do you want to jump at a local dropzone near you, or do you want to jump at Rainbow Boogie, which is located at Cross Keys near Philadelphia? You may also have other questions! Click the link above for the New Rainbow Skydiver FAQ, to help you get started skydiving!

We highly recommend Freefall Adventures/Skydive Cross Keys near Philadelphia because they are the main sponsor of the Rainbow Boogie. However, we realize those in California and Europe are sometimes too far away, and may wish to train locally first before flying down to visit Rainbow Boogie. The above link will tell you how to get started.

First Jumps at Skydive Cross Keys can be purchased at:
Link: http://crosskeysskydiving.com/tandem_new_jersey.php
If you are visiting Philadelphia just only for one tandem jump, purchase your First Jump Tandem for $165.00 at the above link and then reserve a specific day and time with them. Cost includes instructor, briefing, gear rental, the airplane lift. Please mention that you want to jump at "Rainbow Boogie" (last weekend of August). Then, please stay for the night of Saturday August 28th, for the Airplane Hangar Party!

Disclaimer: For liability reasons, please listen to your skydiving drop zone staff and instructors, instead of our advice. We're just pointing you in the right direction :-)

____________________________________________________

22,000 feet King Air Jump at Rainbow Boogie!

Skydive Cross Keys now has a new King Air airplane. Only 7 minutes to 13500 feet! The King Air also has a built-in oxygen system. 22,000 foot jumps are available during early Saturday and Sunday mornings. High-altitude jumpers must have a C license minimum, attend a special briefing at 8am, and have a read through SIMS Section 6. A high-altitude Gay Way Load is planned too. (please forgive the planeload pun)

Rainbow Skydivers Banner Hung Up at SKYDIVE PERRIS!

Photo: http://bit.ly/RainbowSkydive004
We hung up our new banner at our corner at Skydive Perris! Several of us were at Skydive Perris (near Los Angeles) for the Perris Big Way Camps from April 29th through May 9th, including Mark Rejhon (myself), Joseph Wood, Lamar Benson, Michael Gamble. We also had several visiting Rainbow Skydivers, including two student skydivers, a retired skydiver returning to the sky, as well as Jason Russell and his boyfriend Steve..

Rainbow Boogie @ Aug 26-29th @ Skydive Cross Keys (USA)

Link: http://bit.ly/RainbowBoogieInvite
Over 50 new members have joined the Rainbow Skydivers Facebook group since the last newsletter! This includes some international Rainbow Skydivers who have never heard of Cross Keys. We now have 56 confirmed and 85 tentative. This is a reminder to update your RSVP for Rainbow Boogie 2010, the world's only annual gay skydiving event! Along with the concurrent event (See below), we are now expecting to be the second biggest skydive event for year 2010 at Skydive Cross Keys.

An Airfare sale is currently on. The prices have fallen for many international airfares! Skydive Cross Keys is located only 20 minutes away from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).

____________________________________________________

Aerodyne/NSL Sponsored 20-Way Event Concurrent With Rainbow Boogie

Link: http://crosskeysskydiving.com/skydiver_events.php
For those experienced skydivers not interested in participating in gay-related events (i.e. straight skydivers, closeted, or those interested in different types of jumps), there is a concurrent skydiving event running at the same time as Rainbow Boogie! Advanced Skydive Project is a 20-way event that is sponsored by parachute manufacturer Aerodyne, as well as National Skydiving League (NSL).

Then PARTY with us at our Airplane Hangar Party on the night of Saturday, August 28th! Rainbow Boogies historically typically have lots of straight girls in attendance partying with us too; therefore supportive straight men need not be afraid; come right "OUT"! (pun intended)

____________________________________________________

Hotel and Camping Accomodations

Link: http://bit.ly/RainbowBoogieInvite
Free camping is available at Skydive Cross Keys/Freefall Adventures. You can bring your trailer or tent. No trailer hookups. Alternatively, there are nearby hotels ranging from $50 to $100 per night ($25-50 per person) at the following locations near Skydive Cross Keys:

Best Western (skydiver discount) - 856-340-7900
Howard Johnson - 856-228-4040
Econo Lodge - 856-262-8400
Red Carpet Inn - 856-768-5353
Or bring your trailer or tent!

Several jumpers are staying at Best Western, if you're looking for maximum car pool opportunities, if you want to avoid bringing a car.

Night Jump on Thursday Night August 26th

Attention, attention! Night jumps is now on the first day of the boogie (THURSDAY NIGHT)! You can jump solo or participate in a NIGHT GAY WAY WORLD RECORD attempt too (target: approximately 5-way in size, with a VERY high altitude break off for safety reasons). To participate in the night time gay way record, you should have already done night RW already. Otherwise you can jump solo! You should attend the sunset jump of Thursday night, the safety briefing (by the dropzone's safety officer), and have your own night-jump gear. Night jumping is beautiful, and pretty safe if conducted properly. Please review your SIM to re-familiarize yourself with night jumping procedures.

____________________________________________________

More LED Xmas Lights Needed

We will be bringing 15 strings (2,000 bulbs) of rainbow-colored LED christmas lights to decorate the entire dropzone during Rainbow Boogie. However, this isn't nearly enough for a big dropzone -- if you are driving early (i.e. Wednesday or Thursday) please bring ALL your mixed-color LED Xmas lights to make the dropzone even more dazzling! Only LED is accepted, no old fashioned incandescent lighting. (LED is more efficient, safe, and not a fire hazard). If you have glowsticks, bring them too. They are useful for both the night-jump and for the dance/DJ party on Saturday night! If you plan to bring LED decorations, please notify me at [email protected]

____________________________________________________

Bring your LEATHER Chaps or Underwear for the Underwear Jump!

A now-famous Rainbow Boogie annual tradition, Saturday sunset jump is an underwear jump. Bring your leather pants, leather chaps, or your favourite underwear for this jump! Lingerie is acceptable wear on this jump too, especially if you are a girl who wants to be on this jump. This year we want to fill the ENTIRE OTTER this time around! Please note, the dropzone has the right to refuse certain inappropriate wear (so cover-up your genitilia).
Participation is OPTIONAL. You can WATCH, if you prefer!

NOTE: For safety reasons, NO LEATHER HARNESSES during this skydive, please -- straps are a snag hazard.

Mark Rejhon is DEAF

I'm the boogie organizer, and I'm hearing impaired (deaf) since birth. If this is the first time meeting me, speak to me slowly. I can speak and lipread. Sometimes I will use my BlackBerry, laptop, or a notepad to communicate. There will also be a whiteboard or easel whenever I am assisting in video debriefs. I am also a member of Deaf Skydivers at http://www.deafskydivers.org/

More about me: I load-organized last year's Gay Way World Record, along with assistants. My primary jumping discipline in the last 2 years have been big ways. I have attended 9 Perris Big Way events (50 and 100 ways), as well as several other major big way events including Men's World Record 2009, Kaledioscope 2009, and Z-Team 2010. I have a long-term aspiration to be a part of The World Team for the next World Record. I rely on Perris' safe big way jumping techniques as a template for Gay Way World Record.
