froggie 0 #1 June 11, 2001 hey all.. heres a thought: we all like to travel, and the fact that there are dz's all over the place is a good thing. So heres a thread to point out some 'landmarks' for visiting jumpers. Got the idea from kevins post about not being able to locate the dz. and hey guys, i know that this is no subsitute for reviewing ariel maps and talking to regulars at a new dz.. just something to add to that. so here is cross keys...If youre looking at the landing area to the west are woods, to the east is the hanger. to the north is more woods, to the south is the runway and even more woods. places to land off/ ways to find the dz:if you open and you notice the golf course, know thats to the west. the golf course is right past the woods to the west. To the north we have the 'field of houses' (formerly field of dots to some old timers), to the northeast we have a couple of big open fields. something to know though, those fields are currently construction sites/ building areas so prepare for a rocky ground and rough landing. To the east, past the hanger there isnt anywheres to land. at least not until youve cleared the houses and tree lined yards. But there are fields to the far(ther) east. the main road runs N/S and then the road that the dz is at the end of runs E/W.. so youve got to clear those trees and the road and youve got some fields. Far east, but still reasonable there is a huge parking lot that jumpers sometimes land at. To the south there is the runway (dont land there!) and a bit of grass before the trees start. Way beyond those trees there are fields. But ive never really checked out how far away they are so i cant help much when it comes to 'outs' that are south of the landing area. Hope this helps any first time jumpers/ visiting skydivers. you can find an ariel map at the crosskeys web site. http:// freefalladventures.com go to the 'experienced jumper' section and search around.kelly
PalmettoTiger 1 #2 June 11, 2001 I found a 1995 aerial image on Terraserver. As Froggie pointed out there's been a lot of subdivision construction and clearing in the past 6 years, but this is so you can get a basic idea of what she's talking about:8 meter resolution (DZ is in upper right)4 meter resolutionBlues, Squares,PTiger*insert sub-100 character sig here*
