  1. Glad to hear you escaped unhurt!

Great postings here by everyone as well...very educational. This type of malfunction seems to be almost everyone's biggest fear, so its always good to hear a refresher on how to deal with it. Props.

    We need more of these....

  2. An Update:

Well, I hate to revive an old thread, but this seems like the most logical place to pick this convo back up...

I ended up moving to Memphis about a month ago and to summarize all the emails above:

My office - Ended up next to Gordon Biersch and Blue Fin on Main St.
I Moved to - Mud Island (All things considered, pretty cool so far...)
Memphis - Not Atlanta, but enough to get into trouble.

Now after a month of flying back and forth to Atlanta and a nightmare move, I'm ready for the good stuff: Skydiving!

Does anyone know what plane flies at WTS when the King Air isn't there?

It looks like it wont be back till the first weekend in March (According to the website) so Ill probably make the first trip out there that weekend (weather permitting). Is the drop zone typically busy when the King Air isn't there?

Looking forward to meeting new jumpers,
    Scott

These places people are telling you about are nice, but they are VERY suburban. And MEM does not have the type of suburban nighlife that ATL has. If you want to make it anything like living in Buckhead, you need to look on Mud Island or in some of the new lofts downtown. If you want an apt, there are apartments in South Bluffs and on Mud Island that are not outrageous. A Main Street loft will remind you of ATL rents.

    Hey Brent,

I actually looked on Mud Island and found 1 place I liked, it was all the way at the end of the island, called Estates at ????. The apartment person I met with also recommeded checking out the South Bluffs, but I was so busy it was the only place I never got to. That'll be on my next trip...

Right now I live in Alpharetta because my office is up here, so Im a good 30 minutes from Downtown Atlanta. However, like you said, there are so many things to do in the suburbs, I never go downtown unless its to a Falcons, Braves, or Thrashers game, or a big concert.

if you do not mind an older place in a good location the George Washington apartments off Poplar are relatively close to Overton Square (a decent bar area) and downtown.

had not heard of these, will have to check them out.

Get on the DD list and call me if you want a second opinion from someone who does not live in the bucolic part of MEM.

What is the DD list? Ill check your profile and see if your email address is on there.

    Thanks again,

as for places to live, that kid of depends on where you new office is going to be located?

If you are going to buy a house I highly recomend that you live outside the county(shelby).

I live just across the state line into North Mississippi (town called Olive Branch) where a lot of people from Memphis are moving to because you can get more house and property for the dollars.

I don't recommed Cordova: There is a lot of crime moving out that way, taxes are high, traffic is almost as bad as the rush hour traffic going around Atlanta.

Places I do recommed looking: Fayette County (located East of Collierville just outside the county line)
Collierville (it is inside the county but it is a nice area, not much crime)

Where our office will be - thats the big question and that will play a huge role in where I live. It sounds like it will be on the East side of town (Cordova area) or some other areas that I was showed, but dont know the names. Some were downtown, some were by the 2 big buildings east of Memphis.

I will be renting an apartment to get going and I already looked at several places, some I liked were that Echelon (sp?) at The Ballpark, and The Bristol on Union.

Collierville - I was told not to live there either, because it was way to far away from everything.

I guess these are things Ill have to figure out for myself when I get there!

    Thanks,
    Scott

Hi and Welcome to Tennessee. I jump at WTS. I live in the county next to Shelby (Memphis). There are several golf courses in the area. My office is located on the Southwind Golf Course. (get your company to become a member).

We (my and my hubby) don't go out much because we have a hot tub and feel no need to leave the house too often. Anyway, Drakeshelby (kevin) or Bmcd308 (Brent) would better know what to do.

River Kings Hockey is suppose to be pretty good. I've never been to a game YET.

In the summer the Redbirds games are pretty fun.

We can give you a better lowdown on the place once you get over here.

    Looking forward to meeting you.

    Judy

    -----------------------------------------------

    Hey Judy,

Thanks for the additional advice....I think someone else mentioned Southwind too, but you know how it is when you are hearing a million new terms for the first time.

As of now I could be in Memphis as soon as January 20th, depending on how quickly the $$ situation gets worked out. I know in Atlanta jumping slows down somewhat until the weather comes back in March, but I would be out to WTS way before that to meet people.

I appreciate all your help and Ill email you when we get a little closer. If you come up with additional details, feel free to pass them along.

    Thanks,
    Scott

  6. My company did send me out to Memphis for 2 days last week to check things out, and I did see Beale Street, although it was a Wednesday night so there wasnt much happening. (Also went to the Flying Saucer, that place was more active.)

Outside of skydiving, I golf and travel alot, play a ton of poker, and love baseball and hockey. I take several trips a year to other cities and having Delta's hub in Atlanta keeps things cheap. I checked flights from Memphis to some of the cities I go to and flights do seem to be a bit higher. (As expected)

Im aware of Tunica, but dont see myself going down there too much, I dont need to end up with Uncle Joey after me. I enjoy gambling, but wouldnt consider myself a high-roller by any means, and I typically go to Vegas 4-5 times a year to get my fix.

Saw you guys have the hockey team and the minor league basbeall team, and from what everyone told me, those seem like pretty hot tickets. As far as the NBA, I could care less...Id go for the social aspect, but thats it.

If you havent been to Atlanta, you should definitely make a trip...I could write a novel about the things to do here.

Ok, I just read back over this and it sounds like a frickin personals ad, so Im going to stop now..

Any additional info about the better parts of town to live in would also be good stuff. Im hearing alot about Cordova if I decide to live outside of the city. Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Scott

  7. HELP!

Anyone out there live in Memphis and/or jump at West Tennessee Skydiving?

I found out my company may be moving me from Atlanta to Memphis, and Im hesitant for several reasons...

    A. I dont know anyone who currently lives in Memphis
    B. I know VERY few people who have lived there
    C. Im assuming there is considerably less to do in Memphis than ATL.

So, since Ill be skydiving quite a bit, I figured this would be a good place to start looking for info....

Ive already received a bunch of information on the dropzone there (West Tenn. Skydiving) and all of it was very positive, but I need info about the city itself.

Whats there to do? Is it a young crowd? Whats the social scene like?

Any info anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated! Normally I could be IM'ed, but Im on vacation until next Monday, so if you could respond here, Ill get it quicker.

    Thanks,
    Scott
