He just said to flare at rate of descent. I have had stand up landings, but less than my embarrasing faceplants. Should I come in half brakes then when I am about 5 feet up flare as hard as I can? -
I have 39 jumps and all I have left is my checkout dive and exam for my A. For some reason, I have been having trouble with stand up landings. I dont know if I and coming at the ground too fast because I turned to late on my final approach, or if I am not flaring all the way (which I think I am but I dont really pay attention nor remember if I did after im on the ground), or if I am flaring too late and fast. Can you guys give me some proper landing technique so I am not the only certified diver landing on there ass or rolling on a beautiful low wind day. Thanks. -
Touche.Quote>How about I hit you in the head with a baseball bat wearing a protec.

How about I kick you in the face with your protec, then kick you in the face while you are wearing a Factory Diver . . .
Choose the right tool for the job. Some helmets have very good impact attenuation, some have good facial protection, some have excellent visibility, some never fog. The helmet you will need for demos will be different than the helmet you need for 4-way - and the sort of helmet you need for high altitude record attempts may be something else. -
I guess I was being a little pushy and maybe arrogant. Sorry guys. I was just shocked how skinny that helmet was. I just thought when I was holding it "$200 for this skinny thing." It was a shock. I expected the skydiving helmets to feel solid. Then my rigger told me one time he was swooping and had a real bad landing. He said if it wasnt for the protec he was wearing, he could have been seriously hurt. It was just a shock, and still is. Sorry, I just couldnt believe it. Something so dingy feeling for such a high price. The companies are making huge profit. They can sell it for that much because there isnt much competition in the skydiving industry. I just dont know if I can bring myself to pay that much money for that tiny skimpy helmet. -
I have a better idea. How about I hit you in the head with a baseball bat wearing a protec. Then let me hit you wearing a mindwarp. Then tell me which offers better protection........if your not unconscious. -
Yeah but look at that helmet. It is thick, real thick. That is completely different to a mindwarp. Mindwarp may be carbon fiber, but it has no impact absorbing material. I can squeeze what little padding there is right against the shell. They may protect against minor bumps, but that is it. A poster here said he bumped his head on the airplane and was unconscious for 4-5k. If he had been wearing a protec, he probably wouldnt have been knocked out at all. I have never held a fullface. This was mainly directed to open face skydive helmets. I wasnt specific so it is my fault. But if I would choose between a nice protec and an open face skydive helmet. I will go protec.
Edit: Also, I highly doubt that helmet meets the military standards. -
Not me. I would like to know if someone collides with my canopy or I have a rough landing; at least my head will be ok. -
I WAS going to buy a bonehead mindwarp. I recently went to my dz to take the packing class and my rigger had a bonehead gunner (pretty much the same thing) sitting on the counter. So I hold it and I was shocked. It is so thin. That helmet offers NO protection what so ever. I will never buy a skydive helmet. $200...FOR THAT. HA. My rigger told me all skydive helmets are pretty much like that. He recommended a protec snowboard helmet. They have sxp multiple impact protection for maximum protection. And they have ear pads that are detachable. He even has an audible in his ear pad. And it is only $50. Why would you ever 4x the money for 100% less protection. -
What does SC stand for? -
I JUST SAID THAT WHEN YOUR TIME TO DIE COMES YOU WILL FUCKING DIE. GOD DAMN. DO YOU PEOPLE HAVE A FUCKING STICK UP YOUR ASS. YOU CAN BE SAFE ALL GOD DAMN DAY, BUT WHEN IT IS YOUR TIME TO GO, YOUR GUNNA GO. NOT MATTER WHAT. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. I ASK ONE SIMPLE QUESTION ABOUT SUNGLASSES, AND IT TURNS INTO "FLAME THE NOOB." IT IS PEOPLE LIKE SOME IN THIS THREAD WHO DRIVE PEOPLE AWAY FROM THIS SPORT. COCKY ASSHOLES. -
Yeah. Regardless of all this fate and choices crap. I will always choose safe over looks. So let us end all this belief crap and just get along.Quotefate, fatal...nice similarities. Accepting fate is the wrong attitude to have. Fight it to the death.
You threw out fate in response to Kallend's questioning preceived measures of cool versus safe. At that point, it's not longer fate, it's about your choices. -
Why does everyone think fate 'controls' you and your decisions? You control yourself and your actions. All fate means is, it was meant to happen or supposed to happen. If you walk out the door, it was your decision and you committed to that action. It was just meant to happen. And by the way, if a healthy athlete chains smokes, well he isnt considered healthy now is he.QuoteWhy do I see this going to speakers corner?
But... if a drunk driver hits you and you die, since you were meant to die at that moment, should the drunk driver really go to prison for merely doing the job fate dictated for him?
Or if you are the drunk driver and you die, did you die because fate said it was your time or because you made a stupid decision to drive drunk?
If your decisions 'do affect whether you die or not', then how does fate have anything to do with it?
If that healthy athlete who died of cancer was a chain smoker (or married to a chain smoker, so second hand smoke), then was it fate or choice that did him in?
If you jump out of a plane without a parachute because you honestly forgot to put your rig on (it's happened) rather than intentional suicide, is that fate or choice? -
I believe in fate. That is all I mean. I am just saying that when it is your time, it is your time. I never said your actions dont affect how you die. You misinterpreted what I said, and now you put words in my mouth. I said, if it is your time to go, then you will go. Regardless of circumstances. Meaning, for example, if you and your friend get into a car accident and he dies and you dont. Then it was his time. Or if a healthy athlete dies of cancer, then it was his/her time. Regardless of how healthy he/she was, he/she still got cancer and died. If you jump out of an airplane without a parachute and commit suicide, of course you will die. And it was because of your actions, but it was still meant to happen. Your actions do affect whether you die or not, but whatever happens was meant to happen. That was it. -
What model do you have. I would like to have the glasses so I can wear them outside of jumping. The goggles dont really look that good for everday wearing. I am not going to spend $130 for glasses that I would only wear in the sky. Know what Im saying.QuoteYou can buy clear lenses for Wiley-x glasses. They have foam almost all the way around the edges. I don't have many jumps with them, but they worked great even tracking on the ones I have made. They come with elastic straps that plug into the temples after you take off the back portion of them. I bought mine on E-bay really cheap. They came with tinted and clear lenses.

Nice pic. I actually like the Flex Z minis. I will just get a pair of those. I decided against spending $130 on a pair of sunglasses. Plus I am still learning so it could be hazardous to me and others. -
You know what I mean... -
These sunglasses look like they are impossible to come off. They have some that are a mix of goggles and sunglasses. They are meant for motorcycles which can do well over 120. I may consider buying some later on. -
I believe that when I am meant to die, I will die. Regardless of circumstances. But I have decided against wearing sunglasses so I dont cause danger to others. For now at least. -
I guess your right. I just like the sunglasses. Then when I saw pics of other divers wearing them, well I thought they looked pretty cool. Plus you can block out the sun while your diving which is a plus. I believe you can get better shaded vision with sunglasses than with a pair of 14 dollar shaded goggles. But I dont really know since I am a noob, which is why I am asking. Your right though, safety definitely over looks. -
SWEET! That made my day. Thanks. I wasnt sure. I dont like the way goggles look. Sunglasses are much more sleek and cool looking. I am glad to know that they work. I hope they do good for me too. -
I have to say I am not a fan of goggles. I have seen some pics of guys jumping with sunglasses. The Gatorz glasses look okay, but I would much rather get some oakleys. Has anyone jumped with sunglasses? Do they actually stay on? And would they fit in the mindwarp helmet I am going to get. The attachment pic is the kind I am going to get. -
Ok, I have been looking into some helmets, and I have decided on two. I will end up getting them both, but which should I get first. The MAMBA or MINDWARP. I have heard good things about both of them. I just graduated AFF and will be doing some solos and SDU jumps. Which should I buy first? I would ask people a the DZ but I havent seen anybody who owns either. There are also a lot more people online, so I can get more opinions. Thanks. -
Does anyone know anything about the mamba by bonehead. I like the carbon Fiber. Does the visor come off. Does it have a good field of view. I mainly a full face helmet that has the widest view possible and removable visor. -
Well I would like to order before I go jump again. I would also like to have many opinions so I can make a good decision.
Trouble with landing....
