It's a bloke flying a wingsuit (from a helicpoter admittedly) down the side of a mountain - seriously only a few metres off the deck in places.

G'day all

just trying to get in touch with any aussie jumpers out there (now that the ABA forum is down - been working up to posting this for a while but now that I'm all ready to go, wouldn't ya know the thing goes offline ) for a bit of info.

I am (obvously if you look at my profile) a novice jumper with all of no experience but I wonder about the possibilities of connecting with local jumpers with a view to maybe one day getting involved in this sport (I've read the 'how to get into base' articles and such and have no intention of persuing any BASE goals before I've got enough jump/canpoy/life experience to make myself feel comfortable enough to take an FJC and generally not make a dick of by getting hurt/dead from my own stupidity).

I won't bore you with a full resume but if there are any Aussie jumpers (particularly I spose from the QLD area) who'd like some keen as mustard (4am=OK ) ground crew with a car and the beginnings of a law degree PM/e-mail me
I'm overseas at the moment (back Dec/Jan) and only really looking to get a feel for the local community.

Just so we're all clear, neither of these spots are as high as they may look (and the 12 apostles are I do believe heritage listed) ... Just as a point of possible interest (from a non-jumping but interested third party - me) Qurank.com had a recent thread on the highest cliffs in QLD ... not sure if it is good form to post it here (lots of sites named ya see).

for sure there has to be a million different reasons anyone does anything but if you do anything you don't really enjoy just to be 'cool' you're missing the point in my book.

Lifes too short to do stupid shyte just to impress people, and in the case of skydiving you'll probably make it a lot shorter if you do.

But it is comforting to know real skydivers think it's 'cool' to jump out of a plane as well .

Hoping this doesn't come off the wrong way but I was interested by the replies to my last post, made in (quite substantially drunken ) jest, in which I stated that skydiving looks cool.

Looks to me like some folk took a bit of offence, or at least didn't seem to like the idea of someone thinking skydiving is cool (particularly I spose a one jump wonder who has still not done any further training ).

this is obviously not the first or only time it's been mentioned that if you think skydiving is cool you should not take it up (the impression I get reading a few posts around here anyway).

obviously if you hate every second you're in the air and only do it to be 'cool' you're an idiot but in saying skydiving looks cool and that's why I wanna get into it more seriously I am being honest. It looks fun... why else would anyone do it (or anything really).

Surely every jumper here did not see a jump or hear about it or whetever and think 'yeah that sounds/looks like it could be a deeply moving personal experience' (though I don't doubt some jumps may be). Surely most, if not all, thought about it and it occured to them that jumping out of a plane could be really fun so they tried it.

Am I wrong ?? is there something wrong with wanting to start jumping cause it looks fun/interesting/different ?? (maybe it is just the word 'cool' and it's lame connotations that folk dislike ?)

this is not intended as an attack on anyone who responded to my earlier post (in my thinking if you're posting drunk on an internet discussion board you deserve whatever you get ... BTW nothing said was in the least bit offensive, some were in fact really good calls
rather I am interested to know the thoughts of 'real' skydivers as regards 'proper' motivation to enter the sport.

I maintain 'fun' is an OK reason ... though as I thnk about it 'cool' may not necessarily have the same meaning as fun to everyone.

oh and I am not a skydiver or anything sorry if I am intruding ... but I did my tandem and I am gonna do my AFF as soon as I get home and have enough money ... I am sure I will be hooked and I will post that on aan internet forum lots so then I will be a skydiver right ???

But I am not a skydiver (yet ... 3,300 bucks, 2 weeks and 1000 odd jumps to go)

however cause i am want to rant, I did my tandem, was s**t scared and then exhilirated and then s**t scared again and then exhilirated etc... (this went on for 5-8 minutes) and now I wanna do my Aff cause it looks cool\ ... I wanna prove to myself I can do it, and I wanna feel that sensation of rushing air, flying and then floating under canopy (with me in control cause Iam a ocntrol freak)... lord there are so many reasons

... and I met a person who shall remain nameless and he or she fliets planes for the USAF (US air force here in Korea) and they will let me jump out of one if they can ever be bothered doing the paperwork to take a cessna out for a 'familiarisation flight' (amazing what ranking officers can do).

Not that I'm licensed but the person assures me they all have access to parachutes of some kind ... thinking when I'm sober it won't seem like such a good idea but right now I wanna jump for free.

I wanna jump from something high ... I'd rather I had a parachute.

My first (and so far only) Tandem was free.

I am extraordinarily good looking though

I actually won it at the pub (probably the only good thing I have ever taken home from the Royal Exchange ).

My experience of people however tells me if you hang with them just to get something they may not be overly hospitable... not saying that's how it is though
6 months 2 weeks and $3,300 until my AFF is all done and I can play too.

Being an ex (and soon-ish to be repatriated Brisvegan) with all of 1 tandem jump under my belt I can give you the info I gleaned from my small dealings with our local skydivers.

I did my jump with Redcliffe city skydive, top outfit full of good people and parachutes that work . They (as at FEB this year) don't run full AFF courses but speak highly of Ramblers out at Toogoolawah (as has been said here).

Dunno what the forum rules re: posting web addresses is but I won't just in case (both these companies have websites listed here on dropzone.com).

An AFF, all the way to your A licence (20 jumps) with Ramblers is AUD 3,300 - talked to the guy there and he said they do student/poor skydiver deals, basically rock up and have a chat and they will try and sort you out.

as has been said just go to the DZ and meet some folk, Redcliffe city skydivers are always looking for video editors and ground crew if you want weekend work, great way to get on the inside and meet some really good blokes (and girls too ... if you're into that sort of thing )

Nathan: yeah mate I've been doing a bit more research and most of the Dropzones listed are in fact parachute clubs with no place to jump ... guess they must just all use the same dropzone whenever it's running (just like you've said) ... yeah the decision is definately made, there will be no AFF until I get home.

Tunnelfly: hahaha 'longnoses' I like it, I've never felt as foreign as I do here, it's great . My reason for adding to the clutter here in Seoul is to study Korean language as part of a dual Law/Asian and international relations degree. Lord knows why but they decided to give me a free room if I came over, and I just couldn't say no .

My Korean is good (read: ok ) enough that I can make out some of what the pages say and it seems that there is in fact more than 1 drop zone here (not to disrespect anyones words to the contrary ... I appreciate the responses
Long and short though is I'm a student on student wages and the Australian dollar is falling faster than anyone here (compared to the won) and at the quotes prices I just can't se myself doing it while I am here.

still, at least I get a year to read up on stuff

Yesterday (14 April) mycomputer (running windows XP and IE 6) encountered several internal server errors while trying to access any part of dropzone.com other than the main page.

not in the sky (though my first tandem was scary as hell ).

Any number of climbing routes when the pro(tection) runs out or the only placements you can find are purely psychological (and you know it ).

But more specifically (also when climbing) a good friend of mine fell while clipping the third bolt on a route in the blue mountains. Happened so quick next thing I know she is swinging, in a horizontal position literally maybe 20cm above the ground (after a good 6-8m fall). Thought she was hurt but turns out she did not make any contact at all with mother earth. I was on belay and packing bricks

Not sure exactly where this post should go (forum wise) so if I have put it here in error Mr Moderator feel free to move it (cause I know you're likely to need my permission on that one )

Here's my current deal for anyone who would be kind enough to interest themselves.

I am currently studying in Seoul (South) Korea and before I came over here (about 3 months ago) I did my first (and only) skydive (a tandem I won at the pub ). Thing is, once I opened my eyes and stopped swearing long enough to breathe I discovered it's a real buzz and I'd love to do more of it.

I had a chat at the time with the boys at the DZ I jumped with ([insert shameless plug]redcliffe city skydive[/insert shameless plug]) and mentioned that I'd be leaving for Korea and how might I go about getting qual'd while over here and their response was not overly encouraging.

Essentially their opinion was while an A licence is, for most intents and purposes an A licence (i.e. if I got it here it would not be too much hassle to get it recognised in Oz, providing I know what I am doing ) but that Korean safety standards have been questioned in the past.

I'm a mad keen rockclimber and I can speak from experience here when I say that climbing safety (anchors and such) are viewed ... 'differently' here (I mean this with all due respect to the fantastic climbers - and people - I have met here) but there is stuff here that would not happen in the Australian climbing community cause they're just plain dodgy.

I wonder then if anyone has any experience (not really all that interested in 'my mates friend was down the pub with a guy who had no teeth and he said' sort of conjecture) regarding jumping (particularly AFF style instruction) in Korea.

Getting impatient is all ... won't be home to do an AFF in Oz until jan next year ...

Sorry if this was too long ... I've just got nothing better to do today.

I joined this site about 3 months ago and have finally decided I should make my first post here ... what can I say I must be shy or something

So far, jumpwise, I have one tandem under my belt, all thanks to the Royal Exchange hotel and Redcliffe City Skydiving (yeah I won it for being best looking in the bar or something like that ).

I am studying in Korea at present and, on advice from the boys at RCS, am not going to do my A license here (fair call, any thoughts ??).

Will get home, save up and do my course in Oz ... some time next year.

Basically think I want to jump because I am scared of heights (in particular falling from them ) and I loved my tandem (the look on my face in those pictures I think gives a pretty clear indication of when my fear turned to exhiliration ... and it tooka while ).

Look forward to learning more and getting right into it.
