For good solid inexpensive rig - Icon. Built well, the company is great, and they're still relatively cheap.

For cool top of the line rig - Mirage G4. There's some debate over whether the G3 looks better than the G4, but I like the G4's freebag design over the G3.

For latest in safety doodads - Micron from RW. Comes with the Skyhook, which is a cool new safety feature (although it does add complexity.)

I'm suprised you place the mirage above the vector, isn't it basically a copy of RW vector wihtout the R&D RW have invested? ( a good copy admittedly)

    The lessons learned here are:

    1) Stay the hell out of the basement.

    2) If you have a malfunction and the reserve appears of its own volition, GET RID OF THE MAIN!

Disagree with point 2, it is recommended you DON'T cut away in certain situations, for example:

Stable biplane with reserve at rear, the risk of a main entanglement with the reserve following cutting is far greater, than what will nearly always be a stable soft landing.

    Here is the PD findings:

  3. The downplane picture seems to suggest one canopy is right underneath him with one directly overhead?

  4. heres a nice summary:

    http://www.zct.co.uk/skydivemag/pages/articles/aug03/canopiesout.html

But Bill what happens if you go into the downplane with the main underneath you, does that mean its risers are likely to be 'closely involved with you' and therefore be difficult to cleanly cut away. I'm trying to picture where all the lines are gonna be if the thing is underneath you ??

The alternative with the reserve underneath, what happens? Does the reserve just swing back up behind you once the main has gone??

  5. Hi I 'm a bit of a newbie, but aren't canopy transfers frowned upon?Don't you risk entanglement of your reserve with the main?

I think as a newbie I'd of just cut away and seen if the silver handle or the rsl sorted me out first, is that wrong?

  6. Cheers for the advice, although personally I'd like an RSL as well as cypres. Is it true about premature dployments and the javelin?

  7. Many thanx foreverbodies advice. I must admit the fact that so many people appear to jump javelins makes me think they must be 'the' rig.

I have done some research, I heard that the Javelin has caused premature deployments as its cover is not well protected against the wind when sit flying etc (something i hope do learn soon)?

I've looked at the teardrop, there seemed to be a bit of negativity about its construction re; the rsl etc:

All very complicated!!Is a shame there is a 'which' rig magazine!

  8. I'm confused . Aff 4 is a linked exit. How come you were doing a rear dive solo, with your JM not near enough to stop your spin before it became too great.:S

  11. Thanks. these replies just reinforce my point. The first wo have different opinions to you guys!People could be planning exits on the plane and be 500ft out from each other if you know what I mean , with different interpretatons

  12. Being relatively new <50 jumps I wanted to get something straightened out. When you tell someone in a plane what your 'pull' altitude is , it seems everone has a different idea!

For person A - pulling at say 3000ft means their waving off, and deploying, which actually means by the time their actually under canopy (and a potential risk to the person jumping behind them) its 2500ft ish.

For person B- pulling at 3000ft means to them that their waving off at 3300-3500ft in order to be in the process of main opening around 3000ft.

I know its only a detail, but it could potentially be an important one, anyone know the definitive way?
