  1. Kris and I have the Weber Q 200 and we LOVE it. We have a balcony and can only use the small propane tanks right now so it's perfect for that, but it also has an available adapter so you can attach those 20 lb tanks if you prefer. It has a really nice cast iron cooking grate and there's ample space for us to cook and it seems to cook really evenly. I totally recommend the Q series! :)
    Eener...you have good taste, chick!!

  2. May 27th!!! :)
I'm just being lazy for now. Oh, and check out this D-R-A-M-A...I matched into my first choice program up in Detroit for Ob/gyn. (Detroit wasn't my first choice city, but I liked the program so I gave a little) Anyway, I just got a call LAST WEEK to let me know that they sold the hospital and my contract is invalid. Yay. They are moving the residency to another hospital in the system, but they've lost their high risk OB and inner city population exposure. I have the option to not sign with the new changes and I'm taking it.

Right now I'm trying to scramble into a traditional rotating internship so I can just go through the match again next year. Kind of a bummer, but I'm hoping that it will all work out in the end. Plus it'll give me a little more time to toss around the idea of going into ER or Gen Surgery, but I'll probably end up in OB and hopefully in a stronger program that won't sell out from under me!

  3. Aww, don't be such a pussy, Dr. B. So the world's a little fuzzy. Have fun with it...do like I do and go play some tennis. ;):P:)

  4. Cora,

I know you aren't giving up and that's why you're going to get into vet school. Squeak was so right...perisistance pays off. Enjoy the time away from it because you're life is going to change in such a big way once you get in and then you'll be reminiscing about how you once had free time!

Don't be discouraged. It's part of the right of passage. Just do like you're planning...expand your scope a little. Definitely reapply to the first three programs. (they'll consider that to be dedication on your part)

You're getting close to your dream and I have NO DOUBT that we'll be reading your acceptance post very, very soon! You're one helluva chick, they'll realize that, too! B|

And, seriously, make sure you enjoy some free time. Sleep, eat well, exercise, do what you love, get more experience in your chosen field and you'll do great! :)

  5. Kel, I'm sorry to hear about the rejection, but I agree with the advice of the others who have said to keep fighting if it is your dream to do nursing. It sucks to get turned down, but as I'm learning in my residency applications (seven rejections so far...and I'm sure there are more to come) it happens. But screw them.>:(

Just keep trying until you find the place that recognizes you for the valuable individual you are and is a good fit for you! Don't let this one program get you down, k? :)
Wishing you SO MUCH luck for your future!

  6. Thanks to everyone for the info on Detroit!! :)
Kbordson - Hey, girl! I'm so freakin' excited about getting close to residency, but I'm nervous and stressed right now, too. And I have senior syndrome, big time! Anyway, I've applied to both community and university programs and have liked both, but I am absolutely clueless as to which program I'll seriously be able to get into. I've had six interviews so far, have one more scheduled, one I'm not going to schedule, and I'm waiting on responses from maybe ten more programs. The longer it takes to hear from them, the less confident I feel about opportunities to interview with them.

Most of the programs have night float. The Detroit program does two full months a year. The Tulsa program I'm considering does one week a month. I absolutely want a program with it!

OH! Here's a question for you. I like the Tulsa program quite a lot. I felt like I fit in well with the residents and staff and I know they have a very solid general and high-risk OB component. BUT, they are on probation for low surgical numbers. From what I understand, they have to be very "pro-active" in finding attendings to scrub in with at the area hospitals. They're actively trying to remedy the situation and they're an absolutely vital program to the Tulsa region. Would you take that kind of risk?

Oh, and I have the red book already! B| It's fantastic! And a few more because I was pimped hard last week and I hate looking stupid. Went out that day and bought three more in hopes of covering all my bases. It's a sad addiction I have to these medical books!

Hmmm, I suppose that would have been better suited in a pm, but I really wanted to thank everyone for helping me in trying to make a decision!

  7. So I'm right in the midst of (grueling and long) interviews for a residency position in ob/gyn. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get something close to home, but it looks like Detroit might be a very real possibility. It certainly isn't my first choice of locale, but I did like the program they have there. Can anyone give me some first-hand info on the area to help make some decisions a little easier for me?

    Thanks! :)

I have a feeling that consult would be worth the effort!!
(as opposed to some of them that I've gotten in the past: Typical consult from Trauma service: 25 year old female admitted for motor vehicle accident. noted vaginal bleeding on exam (NOTE - NOT a pelvic exam). states LMP (date 4 weeks ago). hCG negative. Please advise.
Ummmm.... wild guess here from the Gyn team, but lets try menses?)

    :D Get a gyn consult, STAT...this patient has a vagina! :o

But, then again, I'm still seven months from becoming a real doctor so maybe I don't have enough sucking experience to qualify for this thread. :|

  17. We would be remiss not to recognize the close association between Greek and Latin languages. I do believe that Greek preceded Latin for the Romans, but I don't feel that argument is useful.

The Story of the Physician...(with references)

    Quote

In ancient Greece there was a group of philosophers called Physikos. They were noted for gaining their knowledge of nature from thinking rather than studying it first hand. From these thoughts they taught biology and medicine, and were called doctors ("to teach "); their students, "physicus", or physician....When "doctor" came into English in the 13th century, it took on the Medieval Latin meaning of a religious teacher, adviser, scholar, and father of the Christian Church-all in the sense of "to make to appear right" and "a shower of the way." This allowed the title of "doctor" to be split into collegiate and medical circles.

    Wikipedia-Doctor of Philosophy - PhD

    Quote

Doctor of Philosophy, or Ph.D. (an abbreviation for the Latin "Philosophiæ Doctor"; or alternatively Doctor philosophiæ, D.Phil., originally from the Greek meaning "Teacher of Philosophy"), was originally a degree granted by a university to learned individuals who had achieved the approval of their peers and who had demonstrated a long and productive career in the field of philosophy. The appellation of "Doctor" (from Latin: teacher) was usually awarded only when the individual was in middle age. It indicated a life dedicated to learning, to knowledge, and to the spread of knowledge.

For over 2,000 years "doctor" has meant teacher (it is a Latin word). The use of the word to describe medical practitioners (aka quacks) is only about 150 years old.

Actually, kallend, I believe the origin of the term doctor is Greek and referred to teachers of philosophy. It was assigned to those people who committed to learning, the pursuit of knowledge, and the sharing of that knowledge. In that sense, the use of the term doctor to convey both the PhD recipient and the physician is appropriate as both have made such a commitment to continued learning and sharing their knowledge (teaching).

Though the physician does not employ the traditional classroom in the learning setting, they maintain a role both to heal and educate. In educating, a doctor can be expected to teach about disease processes, pathophysiology of disease, treatment options derived from research and evidence based medicine, and the practice of wellness. Additionally, the education process in obtaining a Doctorate of Medicine is not an insignificant journey and should not be regarded as anything less challenging than the education of a PhD.

I respect the privilege of the PhD recipient to be referred to as doctor and the rights that the degree confers to the individual. And I demand that the same respect be afforded to me and my colleagues in medicine. You have no right to refer to the community of people who have chosen to educate themselves in medicine as quacks. In disregarding the entire population of physicians in this way, you teach and dispel ignorant statements which deviate from the very meaning of the title you hold in such high esteem.

  21. :):$:2:1

Kris made the move to Florida and we spent our first official married couple weekend together at Zhills cursing the heavy cloud layer and catching a little Harry Potter action. :)
Despite all the weather holds, my intense fear of breaking myself, and my serious attempt to drown this weekend, I did my first jump with my husband and finally got current again after a four month layoff. Followed it up with one more for good measure.

Thanks to HeatherB and Kris's encouragement, I bought :D because I got my B license this weekend! Took a swim in the swoop pond for my water training, learned that you just can't breathe through wet ZP no matter how hard you try or how much you panic, took the test for my B, and bought my case tonight.

All in all, a great weekend! B|

(Gonna miss having you around, Heather!)

  22. Dude! Bayou la Batre is totally backwoods. It's where doctors who agree to do "rural medicine" are sent. Betcha can get some good seafood out there, though.

But, if you start hearing the banjos, get the hell outta there! ;)
