William Gossett as Cooper: I think at some point GC realized that he was flogging a dead horse. He used pictures taken years before the hijacking as comparison for Cooper.

See the attached picture. It shows Gossett at his retirement ceremony at Ft. Lewis, WA only 18 months after the hijacking.

Think he's Cooper? If an Army guy still on active service had pulled off the hijacking, the FBI would have figured it out long ago. ;)

Doesn't look like Cooper at all. Too much hair.

    Another Quiz

    What do

    1. Barb Dayton
    2. Kenny Christiansen
    3. Ted Braden

    All have in common?

    Answer at midnight.

They all dumb? No seriously... the answer is.... they all likes the womens? Wait, that not it. I got it.... their last names all end with an "n".

Another Public Service Announcement and Quiz

Parrot Man at the Shutter site raises an interesting point about the FBI. In one of his comments he says, "The FBI are not dummies."

Hence, the question: What are the FBI? If not "dummies," then how can the FBI in the Norjak investigation be best described?

    Here are your choices:

I don't like multiple choice... so I'm just going to say the FBI were/are dummies. It's obvious as can be that Weber was Cooper. Or it was KC. Or maybe the Sunshine Band. FBI just dumb.

Starting with a suspect and working from there' is how most major cases are solved, by the way.

Learned something new tonight, thanks. I always figured they started with the evidence and then went from there. Interesting.

  5. RobertMBlevins

There is a new suspect now I've heard. Earl Van Best, Jr.

That book has been out for half a year. It's not really new, and there is no credible evidence he had anything to do with the Zodiac crimes. As parrot stated or quoted earlier.... the author started with a suspect and worked from there. One should always be leery of people who do that. Don't you think?

So who are you? You came to the thread in 2013 and now you are an authority of Cooper....

You gave no location in your DZ inforamtion, but I bet it is CA or it was CA in 2004.

Ummm.... yeah.... LOL. Do you really think I would give my personal information to someone who is known for their harassment of others? Rhetorical question... no need for a response.

That's a total bummer. I am 1000% sure Mr. Mitchell would have identified Dick Lepsy as the Cooper suspect. Now we will never know. Thanks Jo, for souring the milk for the rest of us. I'm sure after a couple statements about D-Web gluing his ears to his head, Mitchell went "Red Alert, Shields Up!":S!

I'm with you on this one. This case is never going to be solved and stuff like that doesn't help. Whatever.

In 2001 a night clerk approached me thru Margie Boule. I believe and have confirmed the story he told me.

He contacted me thru Margie and told me a story. The night before the crime a man checked in - who he has claimed since seeing Duane's pictures in an artilce Margie did - that Duane Weber was the man.

In 1971 the next day after the skyjacking he was questioned by the FBI since he was on duty the night before. A man came in after dark and was looking for a room. He said there was a second party outside the door he believed was with the man...stayed in the shadows. Never knew.

The man wanted a room and asked for a late check out and not to be disturbed the next day - which was Nov 24, 1971. Pilots and stewardesses often do this so he thought nothing of it.

Next day - when he goes to work the FBI question him. He tells them what the guy looked like and until the picture of Duane Weber appeared in his local newpaper in 2001 - he didn't know who the man was.

The FBI collected the sign in Card and placed it in a plastic bag. Now the FBI has NO IDEA where THAT EVIDENCE is.
The Night Clerk swears it was signed by JOHN COLLINS. He remembered that clearly....yet, the FBI has NO records. The local law enforcement also did a lot of the work like that - so WHICH dept. took the hotel registration is in question. Portland Police or FBI. It was the Red Lion just out side of the airport.

    LOL, okay, thanks.

***Any clues on HOW Cooper arrived at THE airport? Please don't SHOOT me for asking NOOB questions.

This RANDOM capitalization of words THING is kind of FUN.... I must ADMIT.

Barb says she drove, and left her car. Then took a bus back to PDX from her LZ in Woodburn and drove home to West Seattle.

As for McCoy, it is presumed he flew in from Las Vegas, because he filled his VW with gas in Vegas on Thanksgiving Day.

KC - possibly got dropped off by Bernie in the Airstream after a night camping at Priest Point Park.

    Gossett - no idea.

Uncle LD - no idea, but possibly Dewey dropped him off on the way to stationing himself in the woods of SW Washington.

Duane - walked or got a ride from someone at the Red Roof Inn, where he stayed as John C Collins. He didn't take a taxi or bus because the FBI talked to all those drivers and no one saw him via those means of transportation.

Thanks Mr. Bruce, but I was looking for info on the hijacker, not the suspects. Surely (I'm not calling you Shirley), the authorities questioned cabbies, shuttle bus drivers (they have shuttle buses back then?), hotel workers and such trying to find out info on the guy. I also figure they kept a close eye on the parking lots, as well. If they never found anything at all, it would lead me to think (my opinion here) that he might have been dropped off by a friend.

Is it important? Probably not, but when I get a question that pops into my head, I'm going to ask because so many of you know the case inside/out.

Also, I suffer from ADD, so if I ever ask the same question twice.... go easy on me.

  10. Hi, it's me again. I just wanted to say thanks to Bruce Smith for forwarding me a copy of his book. You've got writing skills, bro. I've done other reading on the subject as well. A very interesting case. I can see why so many of you are "hooked" on it. I don't have a lot to offer which hasn't already been covered. However, I am definitely better informed on the case, which was my goal.

The last couple of years my main area of (internet) research is the zodiac killer case. The Cooper case is something I look into when I when I run into dead ends or get frustrated with the zodiac case. So.... yeah, I read this thread often.

One thing that is strange that pops up in both cases are people who are convinced (even though no one else is) that their dead spouse (or other family member) is the culprit. Could it be a psychological condition of some kind? Not sure, as I'm not a psychologist. I generally try to ignore most posts dealing with those types of claims as they almost always deal more with personal information than anything to do with the case. However, it's a lot easier to ignore such people when there is more than one thread to read through.

Which brings up another point, it's a pity that all the good information about this case is contained in one thread on this site, and not an organized message board dedicated to the case. Don't get me wrong... it's an awesome thread, but overwhelming when looking for specific information.

Anyway, I'm rambling.... sorry. Thanks again Bruce.

************Hi. My name is Buckwheat. Buckwheat Flowers. I'm interested in researching this case in my spare time, and am wondering what book I could purchase that would be to get me up to speed on most of the facts.

I've read some of this thread. It has some good information and some interesting comments, but it lacks organization. I just thought I'd throw that out there before someone tells me to read the thread.

Anyway, thanks in advance for replies.

Just go to Amazon and search out D.B. Cooper. They have all the books available on the case listed in one spot when you search out that term under 'Books'.

My recommendations are, in this order:

    1) Skyjack - by Geoffrey Gray.

    2) D.B. Cooper - Dead or Alive? by Richard Tosaw.

    3) Norjack - The Investigation of D.B. Cooper by Ralph Himmelsbach.

There's this other book that puts forward the idea that Cooper might have been an actual employee of the airline, but you can get that one free just by contacting the author. :)

I had another poster recommend Skyjack to me in a pm. I'll think I'll start there. I'm not really interested in possible suspects at this time. I need to get basic case facts down first. But if you want to send me a copy, I'll eventually get to it. Thanks.

    Other Cooper resources.

Oops beat me to it, Vicki. I was just going to suggest Sluggo's site as well. To me, that is still probably the best Cooper site on the internet.

Thanks. I bookmarked both of those sites. I'm going to read up on the case. I'll probably check back in later with you all when I'm less ignorant on the subject.

Hi. I'm only 44. I think you have me confused with the famous buckwheat character from our gang.

Quite familiar with buckwheat recipes, thanks. Buckwheat pancakes are my faves.

Oh that's a shame. My sympathies. Take care.

You too. Thanks for the lack of recommendations and the condescension. Much appreciated.
