  2. Every year in America there are 35,000 people killed in auto accidents, 200,000 incapacitated, and two million injured. Why does anyone need a car with 400 horsepower? Why does anyone need a car that will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 6 seconds? Why does anyone need a car with a top speed of 150 mph? Why does anyone need a SUV that weighs 6,000 pounds? I think it's time to ban these dangerous high-capacity assault vehicles. Do it for the children. If it will save just one life, it will be worth it. I demand that the President immediately issue a series of executive orders to deal with this ongoing massacre.

    That perspective is like the idea behind concealed handgun carry. The idea is that if some percentage of the population is carrying armed defense, and the bad guys can't identify which ones, then they'll leave all of them alone, because they can't predict who might respond with deadly force. Thus, all citizens become more safe, even those who are not carrying a gun, because of the doubt placed into the minds of the criminals.

    So yes, the publication of homes with guns, also indirectly gave the criminals a list of relatively safe homes which they can target, because they are less likely to meet armed resistance if someone is home when they break in.

    I don't want to speak for Mr. Sherman, but I don't think that's what he said. He's just saying that if you pull all the panels to the outside while containing the lines in the center, then there's no need to spend time "cleaning up" the inside, because there won't be anything to clean up, It's already been done with the previous outside flaking technique.

    Reserves deserve some extra attention.

    I don't have a problem. I was curious. No need to get your hackles up. Seems like the proper place for a discussion of cars is the Bonfire.

    The U.S. has 100% of the 20 largest cities, with a 300 million population. Texas has 5 of the 20 largest cities, with only a 25 million population. I.E. Texas has 25% bad with only 8% good - the concentration of large cities in Texas skews the crime states unfavorably.

    No different than the way Chicago crime statistics make Illinois look a lot worse than it would otherwise be without big city Chicago.

    I've worked in Chicago (south side) for 35 years, where homicide rates are bad, yet I've not felt the need for a gun for self defense once in all that time. Being street smart is the way to keep out of trouble.



    Perhaps the Chicago police should offer classes in being street smart. Maybe some of those 500 people murdered there last year could have been saved.

    Yeah, that was sarcasm. If only it were so simple...

    Just because you don't feel the need for a gun, doesn't mean that everyone else should feel the same as you. And I'm sure that a lot of street smart people have been victims of violent crime. Being street smart isn't some kind of magic Star Trek deflector shield. You work in the relative safety of a university campus. Others aren't so lucky. You get to go home to a safe neighborhood at the end of the day. Others aren't so lucky. You've just been lucky. Most people are. An anti-gun liberal is just someone who hasn't been mugged yet.

    When it comes to crime rates, 100,000 people in Dallas is not the same as 100,000 people in rural Iowa.

    And Texas has Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Austin, as 5 of the 20 biggest cities in America. If Iowa had five cities that big, their crime rates would be bad too.

    And besides, where crime rates are bad is where the good guys need guns for self defense the most.

    This would be more believable if not for the fact that Texas has more violent crimes per 100,000 population than the national average (and more even than Alabama), the Tower sniper, the Luby's massacre, and that whole Kennedy assassination thing. Anyway, I wish him luck telling the Feds they can't enforce a law in his state.



    Texas also has five of the 20 most populous cities in America, and most violent crime occurs in big cities. Despite that, the Texas violent crime rate is 408 per 100,000, versus 386 for the national average. That's only about 6% higher than the average. Now, compare that to Chicago with their tough gun laws - 650! That's 68% above the national average!

    The Tower sniper and Kennedy assassination were in 1963, Luby's was 1991, all before Texas had passed a concealed handgun law. Kennedy wasn't a mass shooting. You had to go back 50 years to find just two examples!
