  1. Hellos!! 1. Is AFF from high speed (>250kmph) fixed wing aircraft conducted anywhere in the world ? 2. Is there any limit on speed of the aircraft to conduct AFF course ? 3. Please share your knowledge on the subject. TIA, Blue skies!
  2. I apologize in advance if there is already a thread for this....I couldn't find one. I am looking for ANY data, even anecdotal, about the percentage of FJC students that earn their A license. Talking to other folks at other DZ's, many people have told me that they think it's probably 5-10%. I would be interested in averages, and also in exceptionally high rates (whatever those might be) in order to increase ours. Many years ago, I was a young Ph.D. mathematician when it was decided that the national pass rate in Intro Calculus (then less than 50%) was unacceptable. Tons of money was spent by the National Science Foundation to develop different training programs, and lots more effort was put into student retention. One of the catchphrases was that this course should be "a pump not a filter" into the other sciences. Of course, there were plenty of folks who didn't see this as a problem that needed fixing. I remember one professor telling me very matter-of -factly, "Calculus isn't for everyone." There is lots that can be said about all of this. I know that it takes time, and money, and dedication to get licensed. I know that not everyone who takes a FJC even wants to get licensed. Still, my personal belief is that if the rate is less than ten percent that we can and should do better. I thank everyone in advance for any data you can provide or any direction you can point me. Thank you.

  5. Hey all. Warning, long post ahead. TLDR; I'm a baby skydiver with 10 jumps, fresh out of AFF. All of my jumps went great and I love the feeling of skydiving, but at the same time, I'm always thinking about how afraid I am for my next jump even when I'm not at the DZ. I'm exhausted and I don't know if I can take the anxiety anymore. I'm not sure if I should accept that maybe skydiving isn't for me or if there's anything else I can do. Looking for any advice or personal experience to help me out! I came into skydiving from a unique background. I've worked at a tunnel for years so I had about 20 hours before I ever jumped out of an airplane. I did my first tandem last summer and absolutely fell in love. I felt like I'd come home and I knew straight away I needed to do it more. I saved up for my AFF over winter and quarantine and I finally started in July. It's been 5 weeks since my course started and I graduated 2 weeks ago, except I haven't done a jump since. The problem is that I'm terrified. I really struggled with anxiety all throughout my progression, couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, cold sweats, felt sick, the whole works. I could never really pin-point what exactly I'm afraid of. It's not door fear, or exiting, or free fall, or landing, or gear fear or any of that. Just this abstract, visceral fear. I somehow managed to finish and now the thought of doing my first real solo (that is, my first self-supervised jump) feels insurmountable. I'm terrified and for the first time I actually feel like I CAN'T do it. I was all geared up and manifested last week and I chickened out and took myself all of the load. I decided to take some time off to get my head sorted out and possibly come back to the sport next season, but I'm so embarrassed and disappointed with myself. I love jumping once I'm out of the plane. I love how surreal the free fall feels, I love flying my own canopy, I love landing. But I'm exhausted from feeling so scared all the time, and the thought of doing another jump fills me with dread and not excitement. I don't know what to do. I don't want to fully quit but at what point do I say "okay, this isn't for me." Does anyone have any advice, or did anyone else go through something similar?
  6. Ok I JUST GRADUATED AFF!! While I’m excited, I’m curious about how stable students/new skydives are generally? I took all AFF after I passed wind tunnel bellyfly, but I kinda remembered the feeling of my first 2min in tunnel... not quite joyful... I watched YouTube AFF videos. Some are stable as hell while the rest kicked out of balance, so not sure about what instructors generally expect to go through...
  7. This is a kinda interesting story... I managed to jumped twice at Perris without telling my mom... I'm still a high school student and I'm getting a part-time job. My mom finally knew this week. I wanna do AFF in next a few weeks and it seems like I have some difficulties talking to my mom about skydiving..so if she doesn't agree I will just go by myself...but I will just do AFF level 1 & FJC without videos. it's expensive!!!!! But it will be a pity bc it will be my first solo jump. Blue skies.
  8. Let me know what you think of my Aff Jumps. Thanks!
  9. I live in New Hampshire and while there are plenty of places within a few hours I can get my A license at, the weather seems to make getting more than a single jump every week or two pretty challenging. It's been three weeks since FJC and my home DZ has had precisely one student get their first jump in (lucky me... my daughter slept in that day and is still waiting for her level one). I'm willing to take time off work to travel and try to get a bunch of jumps in. I'd like to get my A license as quickly as possible. Knowing I'm coming from the east coast USA, where would you recommend I go that has quality instruction and a good combination of aircraft and weather to achieve that goal? International travel is out. US travel is in... I'm going to be as far west as Arizona in November and could see adding to that trip.
  10. Hello everyone! I’m a total newbie here, I’ve been trying to decide if I should start the AFF for the past year. I’ll give y’all a little back story... My husband and I did our first tandem for my 30th bday in the spring. As I landed I literally said to myself, “the ground is stupid”. I fell in L.O.V.E. I could not get skydiving out of my mind, trying to learn everything I can online. We went a 2nd time in the fall. I knew I didn’t want to jump (no pun intended) into anything with haste... I got a new job, spent the next 8 months saving up, and told myself to wait 1 year to weigh the pros and cons but I’m still left with questions and doubt. So! Do you think about it all the time? Was it hard for you to make the decision to start? How do you pay/afford it? How do you juggle your life outside of this community, family, wanting to travel, fixing up the house, hanging with other friends? Lastly, and mostly importantly, if I decide to start I’m left not knowing if I’ll complete or continue on, which I’m ok with but Have y’all ever know someone to stop, and if they’ve regretted their decision or not? Thank you so much! Paula G.

  12. Silicon Valley Skydiving, former Skydive Hollister, opened its doors in 1984 as Adventure Center Skydiving and has served the San Francisco, San Jose and the entire Bay Area ever since. Offering tandem jumps, AFF, jump tickets, gear rentals, and various skills coaching and training, we are the only USPA Skydiving Training Center 1h drive from San Francisco and less than 30 minutes drive from San Jose. Sandwiched between San Jose and Monterey Bay, you can see the ocean and coastline, Sierra Nevadas, Santa Lucia Mountain Range, and perhaps even the Golden Gate Bridge! Maybe. WE LOVE TRAINING AFF STUDENTS TO GET THEIR LICENSE. We have Accelerated Freefall students jumping and graduating with us almost every weekend, going on to earn their A-license with us and beyond. Here's more info on our different AFF packages and their prices. Unlike other tandem-oriented DZs, we love fun jumpers! Jump tickets to 13,000 feet are $32, and we also offer gear rental if you don't have your own rig (rentals are first come first served, and AFF students get priority, so get here on time!). Skills need work? Yeah, we have coaches! Call us to make sure: 1-800-FUN-JUMP
