  1. I've been following this discussion since the beginning. I don't agree with the idea of requiring qualifications to jump a wingloading and have said so. But I had a thought yesterday: How much difference would it make? That is, how many people who are getting hurt or killed would have met the qualifications and been 'legal' to jump the w/l they were? From what I've seen & read, the answer would be 'not many'. Most of the people I know who got hurt were fairly well qualified. They had the experience, the jumps and the skills to do what they were doing. They just screwed up. Some had the jumps and the advanced licenses, but didn't have the skills. Some of the 'new jumpers' who got hurt were under reasonably conservative canopies. They just thought they could do what the 'cool kids' were doing and flew themselves into the ground. This applies both to what I've personally experienced and what I've read on here. The one big exception to it was Sangi. And he had everyone on here telling him he was going to hurt himself for a fairly long time before he proved them right. The actual number of people who were on a canopy beyond their skill level when they got hurt is pretty small, as far as I can tell. Again, this is just my 'gut feeling', and doesn't really have any facts or statistics to back it up. I welcome correction from anyone who has better info.
  2. His original name was Sangi. After he biffed, and ended up paralyzed for life, he came back under the name "Clipped Wings" and owned his mistake. The one Virgin Burner started asking for donations for books for Sangi to read while in the hospital: https://www.dropzone.com/forums/topic/30584-anyone's-got-a-spare-50$-for-our-friend-sangi!%3F/ There's a couple other threads, including the one in incidents, but I can't seem to find them. The 'member page' has ALL the content from the person. In chronological order. For some folks, that's a few hundred pages.
  3. His name was Sangi - he unfortunately gets a mention in quite a lot of threads; https://www.dropzone.com/search/?q=sangi
  4. I feel like Sangi should've stayed on Katana. The ground hungriness of Katana would have let him hook higher thus giving him more chance to abort the turn. It is not really safe to learn how to swoop with super short recovery arc canopy. Had he made same choice of low turn with no intention to abort with Katana, Sangi would've been dead. I think I rather wanna be dead than be paralyzed like Sangi. Bernie Sanders for President 2016
  5. Hi guys, Provided you got the the member name correct then a member search is possible. You can look at https://www.dropzone.com/profile/69423-sangi/ for all the content done by that member, hopefully that narrows down the search somewhat.
  6. Suggest you read Sangi's downsize story: https://youtu.be/tF578oSkrKk http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4203276;search_string=sangi;#4203276
  7. As a matter of fact, yes, you are missing something. I know Sangi personally and he's actually a really nice guy. The reason that he post the posts that he posts (quite negatively loaded usually) is because when he was new to this site, and asked questions, he always got smartass remarks from the ''oh-so-experienced" skygods who dissed him alot. I guess that's why he now has a more 'bitter' approach to the posts he makes. It's because all the reply's that Sangi got in the past from posters that are plain rude, that he is becoming rude as well. I'd say, people reap what they sow. I find it realy sad to have to discuss about this stuff, and while you might think that Sangi is the biggest dickhead on this site, it is actually this very site and some of the posters on here that made him this way! So I don't think those guys should be bitching about the way Sangi acts on these forums now. Always when he asked a skydive related question he got bullshit remarks, never a straight answer to his question... And that's what I kinda have a problem with. How the hell are you gonna learn stuff here if half of the time people answer like they know best, you know nothing, and communicate that in a patronizing way. Btw: I thought personal attacks like "Sangi is the biggest idiot on this site" were not allowed ... Great moderating guys... "In a mad world, only the mad are sane"
  8. No easy answer. Drinking, smoking and driving are toughies. Kids at that age don't realize they aren't immortal. Rush got it right in Dreamline. So telling them that doing that stuff is a bad idea because it will cause long term harm won't sink in. They will 'worry about it later' or it 'won't happen to them'. There are some kids who won't believe that anything bad can happen to them. Sangi was an excellent example of that. It's pretty clear that different actions & decisions require different levels of maturity. Impulse control and empathy (understanding how ones actions affect others) can be taught early, but often aren't. That's why some choices are given kids earlier and some later. Of course, not all 18 year olds are 'grown up' enough to make good decisions on a lot of stuff. Hell, even some 30 year olds aren't. For criminal actions (like the one in the OP), it can be really difficult. Which is why the 'one size fits all' approach of automatically shifting kids into adult court for some crimes (or only keeping them in the juvenile system) is not always the best idea. Some kids are pretty far gone and 'rehabilitating' them is difficult if not impossible. Others made a bad choice, compounded it with more bad decisions and ended up in a lot of trouble, yet aren't really "all that bad".
  9. Yea, I was thinking Sangi too as I read thru the thread. Then there was the guy before Sangi that Sangi was told to use as an example. He's dead. I forgot his name because Sangi lived and posted video. So goes the forum. And the hampster keeps the wheel going round and round. It's called the Hillbilly Hop N Pop dude. If you're gonna be stupid, you better be tough. That's fucked up. Watermelons do not grow on trees! ~Skymama
  10. He knows (now) - and was told SEVERAL times before, that on his previous "swoops" (such that they even were), that he was already DANGEROUSLY "in the corner", and seen to be "digging-out" each and every prior. However, because he simply continued to get away with that, he just plain (until now) REFUSED to let himself prior - realize any better. On this (fateful) jump, he simply reduced his prior ZERO "margin(s)" to SUB-ZERO, and really - NEVER even realized how/what he was doing. Same kinda mentality I think, but from a different aspect/issue with something else saw just this past weekend. I approached a jumper in a loading area I noticed with a gear alteration/issue - (another lowbie/newbie), and I pointed it out. ...The INSTANT response: "I've had it this way before, and it's okay (worked out so far)." Sometimes they just don't even know, what they don't even know - and "getting away" with something MARGINAL for a couple of times can really prove to be the WORST possible (set up for disaster!) combination. I was able to pull the jumper aside and speak with them - got them to CONSIDER a little bit better and further, and HOPEFULLY got them to see the light to make a correction to the situation before they learned (as Sangi has only now done here) the hard way. I only wish that somehow, SOMEONE could have effectively gotten through to Sangi here, similarly. I've heard it over & over again - that there are SOME, that you just cannot (effectively) ever get through to, and that they really need to "learn their own lessons", for themselves. I dunno. I just can't bring myself to accept that though. So, regardless of (sometimes) continual or repeated frustration, I still - at least keep on trying. Sangi - Now that you have experienced what you have, and you are going through what you are ...can you think of ANYTHING, or even any "style" perhaps of approach from anyone, that might have gotten through to you, BEFORE your incident has now occurred, which might have effectively helped you AVOID it? You now have a unique potential opportunity here, to maybe help OTHERS hopefully, avoid similar fate. In short - was there ANYTHING Sangi, anyone could have ever said or done - that you can think of now in retrospect, that might have been more EFFECTIVE? Hope you heal well and fully, and that you are in fact, able to return. I'm sure you will this time, progress with "pace", grace and humility, and hopefully further thereby - you can also become an effective mentor, to others. I know that if you do, and if you try - you will have my full support! FWIW Blue Skies, -Grant coitus non circum - Moab Stone
  11. This really bums me out. I've said before that this isn't about people giving you a hard time-- it's tough love because people try to look out for one another in the sport and do what they can to prevent another crater in the ground. Isn't that what you did for Sangi? Didn't everybody give you an 'attaboy' for it since it probably saved his life? Just seeing your reply like this makes me sad. I really hope you're right with how confident you are in your skills. As others have stated, they just hate to see an incident thread like Sangi's, except in the parentheses it could say VB instead of Sangi (and worse...maybe even the name of whoever else got taken out with you). I just really wish you could see people are trying to help you. I know Sangi realizes it now. Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)
  12. it always turns to sangi 2.0. sangi busted 360°'s with 150 jumps until he got busted. and posted EVERY (questionable!) video. no courses. no mentoring. just one bad decision after the other. at one point he's had a sub-100 katana, was it a 90? i dont remember. he smacked in with about 180 jumps, pretty much right after he went back to his 129 safire2, from hard pressing from side, public naming and shaming and even calling his dz about his katana. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. Thompson "No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try." -Yoda
  13. I think people posting dates they think he is going to bounce and comparing him to sangi can be classified as overreacting. Sangi bounced because he started swooping before he was ready. Flying a basic pattern is not comparable. OP I am glad you have decided to stay at the 150. The canopy is more than capable of scaring the shit out of you. So will have fun.
  14. dude, dont EVER ask a question about downsizing on here. shitstorm waiting to happen. but yea, about sangi.. he's a friend of mine, and he didnt listen to ANY advice, and i've seen his videos. if you think you'll be fine and you're confident about it, go for it. i once miss-eyed ad 90°, got the visual, thought to myself "oh, THAT's how it looks like to femur!" and stabbed it out. i hit hard, went back up another 3 meters and just kept the thing flying to a final (stand-up) landing. one of the instructors asked me "do you want me to talk about this to you!?" - my answer "nah, i know that was stoopid!" just be alert, every. fucking. time. skydiving maims and kills people. and sometimes those people are still virgins at the age of 20-something, and they'll stay that way. just like sangi. be aware of your decisions, and live with the consequences!
  15. That was at a time when Sangi knew next to nothing about BASE and just started to get interested in it. What prompted that question why the suits didn't "blow up" is because he presumed that base openings are such mega slammers that this might be a damaging factor to a wingsuit. (Edit to add: Sangi meant the following: "I just meant how can the bodies withstand the severe opening shock of the canopy opening") Giving advice with zero experience is just plain wrong, I definitely agree with you on that one! What is strange about that? There is only one elias123 as well... If your talking about other people who act like Sangi, then I presume that those guys just got so fed up with bullshit condesending remarks here that they just left this site for what it is and actually went to do some real skydiving! That I do understand, and is something only Sangi himself can resolve, if he wants to. "In a mad world, only the mad are sane"
  16. I went back to the beginning and read the first page or so. I'm pretty sure you are asking about Sangi. If you are, he's paralyzed for life. He came back on under the user name "Clipped wings." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  17. "I'm fully aware of the history surrounding Sangi, and if you're somehow under the delusion that rapidly downsizing and swooping as Sangi did compares to wearing a camera then it just goes to show how irrational your argument is. There's no comparison between the two." You're fully aware that Sangi didn't listen to a mountain of good advice until it was too late. Yet, you're still here talking smack w/the same thick skull & 'tude? I call Bullshit. You're either the Troll you've been accused of being in earlier threads. Or, you really are that stupid. Either way, you're not worth wasting one more minute on. Where do you jump, in Utah? Good, I'm nowhere near you. Go ahead & kill yourself. DO NOT take anyone else w/you.
  18. >I know Sangi realizes it now. Agreed. Never thought I'd see the day that Sangi was being used as an example of someone who learned wisdom, but he did - and I hope people like VB can learn the easy way, instead of the way Sangi did.
  19. Hopefully he is just a troll, and finally got his rocks off. if only sangi had listened when everyone was telling him not to. I still feel sorry for Sangi. At least he's still alive and didn't hurt anyone but himself and his family. The ability of jumpers to invent new ways to kill themselves and now take others with them. Almost surprises even this one jump wonder.
  20. you say that like he's some big expert now. just because he's got more posts doesn't mean he's got any more experience. yes, people are gonna diss someone who doesn't jump but acts like he knows it all. eli, how come you didn't get spanked with the same rude replies when you were new here and asking silly questions? why didn't I get the same treatment when I firs t got to this forum? a lot of people are greeted with respect and get nice comments, and so did sangi. like Matt, I too was intrigued by your post and did a search. plenty of people were super nice and spent so much time writing long informative replies to sangi's first posts here. go see for yourself. but when someone starts acting like a troll, he'll get the replies he's seeking... and let's face it, sangi trives on stirring shit and pissing people off. don't go ruin all that for him now :)
  21. Poor Sangi is so conflicted between his fawning, breathless hero worship of Jeb and the fact that Jeb is an experienced skydiver, which Sangi unwaveringly hates. Sangi knows he has all the Mad Skilz of a young Jeb, that's why he is similarly mocked and oppressed by that brainless, fossilized clique of experienced skydivers of the world. _____________________________________ Dude, you are so awesome... Can I be on your ash jump ?
  22. Yeah right... http://www.basik.fr/en/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=189&category_id=6&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1&vmcchk=1 Way to argue Sangi. yourself with 98 jumps and little time in the sport you just state that you disagree without providing any facts, while a 35 year sport veteran with 2000+ jumps and a 2 rigger ratings provides his coherent reasons as to why he thinks something else is superior. way to win an argument Sangi ! PS those who may not read the BASE forum should know that Sangi was voted close to the top as the most annoying poster there
  23. So surprised that people are answering this seriously. It has all the hallmarks of trolling, just surprised it's a xfire 1 and not 3. How many people with 26 jumps use 'fully elliptical' etc. Yeah you are probably right, but then again, I also did not believe Sangi was a real person Besides, some real person may be reading this thread, wanting to do something just slightly less moronic, and getting the impression that he is making conservative choices.
  24. Just search for sangi on here and youtube. Wheelchairs are kinda cool, was driving one for probably 5 month, because of some stupid downsize. Too bad this is a troll, the last post Was just too obvious. I had high hopes to witness the birth of the next world champion of canopy piloting. ------------------------------------------------------- To absent friends
  25. The top swoopers want you to out swoop them. Look at Greg Windmiller, he was an accomplished jumper with the Golden Knights when the GKs decided to have a swoop team. Greg and his teammate Chris were sent to coaching with Ian, Tagle and Nick (among a couple of others) and they were all proud of Greg when he got his pro-card and then started earning medals. They were proud of their student and they were proud to have a new friend to compete against, someone to help drive them to refine their skills even further. However, this sport is littered with the broken remains of young jumpers (in experience, not always age) who wouldn't head advice and wouldn't take any help. The same excuse you said above was given by those same jumpers. The last really obvious example on DZ.com was Sangi, he refused to listen because he had "mad skills" and had the same attitude you have displayed. He's lucky he isn't dead, but he is crippled for life now. Try the advice in this thread, both kinds of advice that has been given: skills training and attitude training. Accomplishing both of those will take you very far along the path to your skydiving goals. I want to see you have a long jumping career and be a top swooper, but right now it looks like you're headed down the same path Sangi did. --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
