How would one go about rigging an airworthy RW Para Commander (about 60% of the weight and bulk of the Mark I) for occasional use in a modern harness/container system having sufficient pack volume? I presume the key issues would be finding (or making) compatible risers and D-bag, and identifying an appropriate throw-out pilot chute. Could Slinks be used?

    Has anyonyone had any experience successfully adapting an old "PC" to modern gear?

  3. My Sabre II gives me a somewhat off-heading opening 25 - 30% of the time, and maybe one in three of those is WAY off. I uderstand this is not at all uncommon for that canopy, and lots of people I know who also jump Sabres report the same thing.

    Has anyone else who's had that problem switched to a semi-stowless bag and, if so, did it help? Thanks.

  4. Every couple of years, I post a query as to whether anybody might have any really old magazines they'd be willing to part with. Specifically, I'm looking for pre-1964 issues of both SKY DIVER and PARACHUTIST. My collection has a few holes in '64 and '65, too, but it's the earlier stuff I'd really like to find. I sometimes pick up an issue here and there on ebay, but I'd rather deal with jumpers.

    If you can help, please message me direct. Much obliged.

  5. Seems like almost complete silence about this on the EAA side of the equation (I don't see word one on any of the AirVenture sites). Are KOSH jumps still planned for Wednesday and Friday (per the original HoF announcement), or what? Unless I'm missing something, I don't see any mention at all on the EAA schedule of events.

  6. My new L & B Quattro works fine in freefall, but I have yet to hear the low-speed alarms under canopy. I have the desired Lo Spd altitudes entered, the LO SPD icon appears on the screen and the alarms sound when tested. But, under canopy, nuthin'. Any ideas? Thanks.

  7. Yeah, I'll bet it was the slider! Thanks. Just seemed odd to me that the same thing happened on two successive jumps.

    The ol' Mk. I is long gone, but there are still days I miss it.

  8. The last two weekends the middle fingers of my right hand have been taking some kind of hit on opening (yesterday bad enough to put some painful purple bruises across the first knuckles). Dunno if the bridle has taken a momentary wrap around them on the pull, or if it's some kind of riser slap as I instinctively reach up on line stretch. Not a huge deal, but it is kind of painful after the fact. (Can't recall anything particularly painful as it's actually happening.)

    Has anybody experienced anything similar and figured out the cause?

  9. Still not finding much on the Air City DZ, but stuff from Lake Geneva keeps turning up. Here are meet results from the 1964 NCPL Western Regionals from the July 1964 issue of SKY DIVER, and an announcement from the August 1964 issue of PARACHUTIST that the '64 Nationals would take place at Lake Geneva. That didn't happen; the nationals were moved to Sandy, UT, on very short notice (the reasons for which are briefly discussed in the first paragraphs of the meet recap piece from the October '64 SKY DIVER).

    Finally, I also attached the most-recent Google Earth image of the former DZ site. It appears that all the facilities are decaying badly.

    I have my own pd optimum143 in TJNK, But I want smaller harness container (javelin odyssey) that I would like to buy NJK... I wonder about if my optimum143 fits or not to NJK....? Would you experienced riggers or guys who packed and tried this before reply to me, that if PD Optimum 143 safely fits in Javein Odyssey NJK or not?

    And, finally, does anybody have any info on the DZ that operated at Air City airport in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, in the early '60s? The primary jump ship was a tri-gear Howard DGA-15P flown (I think) by the late Steve Hay, Sr. [SEE photo]. Lowell Bachman, Jim Stoyas [SEE photo], and other early-day midwest luminaries jumped there.



    Found a meet notice and meet results in the October and November, 1964 issues of PARACHUTIST.

    I'm told by the former operator there was another DZ just South of Big Foot Beach operated by I think the Whitings. I vaguely recall seeing a sign near the road with a parachute canopy on it. Not sure if it was advertising or a caution sign for motorists.

    Four and a half years later this thread is still alive. I did buy a domain to create a website devoted to defunct DZs but it'll probably be a year before I can retire and devote the time to it that it needs. When I do have it up and running I'll be looking for stories and photos. It should make for some interesting entries.

    I'm trying to collect whatever information, names, photos, paper, etc. I can regarding operations at this DZ before it's too late. I fear it already is, but ...

    There were two. The first pig farm and the second pig farm. They have an annual reunion. The airport is still there, sort of. They fly ultra lights out of it. It was a hell of a place. Connie O Rouke, Hank Ascutto and Jake the Snake Cramer having gun fights. Bud O'conner, Tom Larson and his dog NASA, Joe Dog and his dog, Dog, the sky diving dog.

    No, the Pig Farm(s) was/were different DZs. The Air City (Aero Sports) DZ was on an old airport between Sturtevant and Racine, WI, just off Highway 11. I know it was in operation in 1962, '63 and '64, and I think Leon Somers ran the show before he headed off to Camp Lake. The Air City airport was gone by the late '60s, turned into (what else?) a residential subdivision. But the local watering hole (the Airport Inn) and the main hanger seem to have survived.
