  1. This is really sad news.... the end of a great era. I remember when Kevin Gibson passed the torch, and Mike Truffer carried it to what we've all grown to love. People subscribed to Skydiving Magazine because they wanted to read it; not because it came along with membership dues. Base jumping was freely talked about with great photos, when Parachutist wouldn't even mention anything that didn't adhere to the BSRs. You got more details about incidents and accidents that provided real learning, not just speculation that "an AAD might have prevented this..." I even got some of my own stories and photos published by Mike & Sue. I guess they're real collectors' items now. Nope, raising subscription prices won't save the magazine. Subscriptions rarely cover the costs of publishing. It's your advertisers who are the bread and butter, and I know how many of my own clients have cut their advertising costs over the past few years. Thanks for the many years of great reading to Mike, Sue, Sandy and all the staff over the years. Sandy, it's been a great pleasure working with you. I'm sure our paths will cross again soon. To Robin, I hope you find another creative outlet for us to pick on. We've enjoyed your tenacity. To Troy White, dear friend and ex-patriot, You can come back now. We have a new president! Best Wishes and Blue Skies to you all, dammit janet!
  2. I just want to send a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you who so graciously and quickly came forward to Kim's aid. Jim has contacted her, and is now in contact with Joe. It never ceases to amaze me what an incredible community we have here. A skydiver in need is responded to immediately. We are moved to tears with gratitude. Blue Skies! jkl

  4. Greetings, dear friends! Below are snippets from a note I received from an old friend and skydiver Kim Adams. I first met Kim when I was a static line student in the early '80's back at the Herd. She was a style and accuracy queen, and she married CReW dog Terry O'Mally who you also will remember as a competitor and record holder. I'm posting this note on for Kim in hopes that the names might jar someone's memory and provide Kim with the connection to Jim Hooper that she is seeking. We're hoping that you have memories of Z-Hills in the early years (prior to George & Betty). If you have any information that might help her reach Jim, please call the phone number listed below. Please forward this message appropriately. Thanks so much for your time and thoughtfulness. Blue Skies, j & F >>~~~~~~> Begin Included Message ----------> -----Original Message----- From: E Kim Adams Hi, Happy 4th! I have been trying to contact Jim Hooper because Joe Faulk, who is dying, asked me to. Could you disperse some kind of message to your mailing list or do you have a current contact bit for him. I have used a lot of bad emails and such. Even USPA, The Mighty, has been stymied. Any help is appreciated. I have copied my last attempt below. Hoop is the once upon a time owner of Z’Hills, an early Sky God. He is in the current Parachutist which is what prompted me to start looking again… that, and Joe calling to say time was short. I have had Terry call Walt, Sylvia and Mike Schultz in the past few days. Joe is holding on. He is so tough. I spoke to his caregiver this morning, the wife of another late Old Timer. Joe is really tough and may last until Friday. Thanks very much. Love, Kim >>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~> Dear Hoop, I hope I have finally found you even though it is not such good news. Joe Faulk asked me to find you. He is dying and may not last until Tuesday according to the Hospice nurse. He has Jimmy Davis, Grady and Lee Cooper down in Florida with him. I don’t know why he was so specific about my finding you. I don’t think he is able to respond to much any more but it would do him good to hear you called. What some people are doing is calling and just speaking to him when the message period starts. He can hear and the phone is on speaker…. Or Jimmy or Lee may answer since they are there around the clock now and can relay messages to him. In any case, please get in touch with me or him. Kim: 609 395 1442 Joe: 727 954 5444 Kim Adams

  7. In case you haven't heard, Jim Wallace has been named a 2006 recipient of USPA's highest award, the Gold Medal for Meritorious Service. [Read detailed post on www.USPA.org.] The presentation and celebration will be held on Saturday, October 6th, during the POPs record attempts out at Perris Valley Skydiving. Everyone is invited to attend this wonderful event honoring our dear friend Jim. Please tell fellow skydivers. Congratulations, Jim! PS: A flyer posted at the DZ last weekend had the wrong date. Attached is a copy of the revised flyer with the correct date of Saturday, Oct. 6.
  8. GLORIOUS REPORT, GIRLFRIEND!!! The entire team was jazzed to be jumping with you! It was quite an adventure, wasn't it? Thanks for being such a big part of the whole event. ...and, don't forget your Friend In Flight! love and blue skies, sistah dammit janet
  9. First, I'd like to thank everyone for their support! We had a great rally of orders over the weekend, and yielded a nice new batch of JUMP FOR THE CAUSE "Friend In Flight" embroidered chest strap cozies. THANK YOU ALL!! Tuesday is the cut-off day for ordering one of these beauties, because each one is individually hand-made by Bev Hein (Bev Suits). So, for those of you who were thinking it over, the time to act is NOW! If you still don't know what a JFTC chest strap cozie is, you can see a sample at the bottom of the shopping page on the JFTC website: http://www.jumpforthecause.com/store.htm There is also an order form there (PDF format) that you can print out and fax in time to make the deadline. JFTC FAX #: 818-781-1364 Credit cards will also be accepted and are guaranteed secure and private. JFTC Voice Line: 818-781-1354. Please e-mail me with any questions you might have. Thanks again for your generous support! Yikes! The big event is only TWO WEEKS AWAY!! Blue skies, jkl
  10. Greetings, Thought I should post a reminder that the deadline for ordering one of the "Friend In Flight" embroidered chest strap cozies is OCTOBER 1. This has become an overwhelming success, and although our wish to fit every JFTC participant with one may not be fulfilled, there's still time for you to purchase one in honor of your loved one. If you haven't already seen a sample, please scroll down to the bottom of this page: http://www.jumpforthecause.com/store.htm These are hand-made by Bev Hein (Bev Suits), and will be a very special featured part of the event. And, as they are hand-made, we must have all orders by OCTOBER 1, to insure delivery by the start of the event on October 14. All proceeds go to "Jump For The Cause", and you can direct any questions about this incentive to me, using the link on the store web page. We're getting close to our goal! We can do it with your help. With gratitude and warm wishes, jkl
  11. OK, I figured it out, and there is now a Dutch Auction set up for JFTC pin purchasing, which should help out those who don't have contact with any participants who are selling them: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=955501611&rd=1 And, while I was setting up this Dutch Auction, the first one (single) I set up was sold! So, get 'em while they're hot! They won't last forever! Going... going... gone! jkl
  12. If you're a skydiver, than you know a woman who's either directly or indirectly connected with the upcoming Women's World Record Skydives. And, if you don't know by now, this is a charity event to benefit "City Of Hope", a Comprehensive Cancer Center. In fact, we've just learned that the money Jump For the Cause is raising for City of Hope will be used to build a new Stereotactic Biopsy Unit, which will provide the most thorough diagnosis with the least invasive methods. Pretty cool, huh? Each of the participants has made a pledge to personally raise at least $2250 for her slot on the WWR. And, as the event gets closer (October 14-19, at Perris Valley Skydiving), the energy in their fund-raising is just exploding. Help your skydiving sisters by getting involved. Visit the JFTC Store where you can purchase commemorative t-shirts, pins, glassware, beer cozies and more! http://www.jumpforthecause.com/store.htm Your donations are tax deductible. -----------> And, the first pin just went on the eBay auction block today: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1854967598 (More will follow, of course, as soon as I get the hang of this selling stuff!) Please visit www.jumpforthecause.com to learn more about the entire event. And, please visit http://www.cityofhope.org/ to learn all about the incredible work they're doing to treat and prevent cancer. I also want to mention one more item in particular that's for sale at the Jump For The Cause Store : It's our very personal project called "Friend In Flight": For $75, the name of a person you wish to honor is embroidered on cozy fabric which covers the chest strap of one of the Women's Record Team Members. These are hand-made by Bev Hein (of Bev Suits), so you know they're top quality, and there's a photo on the store page of what they look like. Bev's done a wonderful job filling all the orders (and the response has been tremendous). We'd love to encourage everyone to help us outfit each of the 135+ participants with one, honoring someone you love who has battled cancer. The reason I point this particular incentive out is because, as they're hand-made, there must be a cut-off date for orders of this item. We're asking that anyone interested in having a Friend In Flight cozie embroidered let us know by October 1 (which is 2 weeks before the event, and really only a month away). Thanks again for all your support and encouragement! With warm regards and gratitude, and Blue Skies! jkl
  13. Greetings to all! If you haven't visited the Jump For The Cause web site, you're late! Take a minute out to check out the activity there, PARTICULARLY THE COOL WEB STORE! Not just the participants are encouraged to shop there; EVERYONE is encouraged to buy something to benefit our quest to raise funds for the City of Hope and breast cancer research. Here's the direct link to the shopping mall: http://www.jumpforthecause.com/store.htm Some of the items are already running out, so don't miss out! The participants have been coming up with ingenious incentive items to sell, and more are on the way, so stop back often to see what's on the shelf. BTW, the pins are going FAST. A bunch are being reserved for e-Bay, and as the event gets closer, the price of the remaining pins will get predictably higher, so get one now while you can. These are definitely collectors' items, and a must for every participant. The retail prices and purchasing links are posted right there on the shopping page with each item. Thanks for supporting our JFTC team! Blue skies, jkl ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This advertisement was done with my persmission. Safe swoops Sangiro
