  1. Our orthodontist wants to put braces on my 7 year-old. I'm not convinced that she needs them now. I know there are some instances where they do want to treat kids young in order to guide the growth of the jaw, but I thought that was only in severe cases. My daughter's teeth problems are not in any way severe. Anyone on here knowledgeable about orthodontics or have experience with braces on young kids? I am planning to get a second opinion, and maybe a third before I do anything.
  2. The last time I volunteered it led to a paid position, gave me great experience and opened a lot of doors for me. In the long run I benefited tremendously by working for free for a few months. Although, I was only volunteering part-time so I was able to keep my paying job. So you need to think about long term benefits. Do you think the experience you gain will lead to the type of paid position that you want? Will you gain contacts in your field that may help you to find a job after your volunteer commitment is over? If you think it's worth it could you get a part-time job to help cover your expenses?
  3. I'm 5'0" which makes me way taller than you. I've never been able to say that to anyone before . Welcome to skydiving! There are other short skydivers out there. I've jumped with others that are my size or a little smaller. Getting gear to fit will be difficult. Just plan on getting a custom container. Get a jumpsuit that fits well to help you fall faster, you'll probably need weights too. Being short is not at all a disadvantage in skydiving. We can do everything the tall people can do
  4. They're just jealous. I'm jealous! Enjoy your life and don't worry about it!
  5. I was attempting to do it utilizing Apples version of Excel. Not fun. Don't do stats in excel, especially the mac version. What were you thinking?

    How do you grill?

how do you make homemade veggie burgers? I'm always looking for new recipes for my veggie friends. as I saw in a McD's in Montreal... Take a hamburger, open it, throw away the meat patty, close, hand back to client McDonald's is just gross with or without the meat.

Veggie burgers! Homemade, not the frozen kind. And lots of veggies, grilled veggies are the best!
  10. I think most of the engineers on here (me included) aren't whining. Just a very vocal few . You're right, the whining is limited. Most of you seem happy about your decision to be an engineer. My dad and my brother are both engineers. I don't think they have any complaints. But they both think I'm crazy for going to school this long. Only one more year
  11. I'm replying to the thread in general not a particular person. Being able to get a job in your field after only 4 years of school sounds pretty damn good to me. Many scientific fields require a Ph.D. to get a job in that field. Try adding on another 5 years of torture (I mean education, of course ). I have no sympathy for any of you. Fortunately, most of you seem pretty happy with your education and subsequent employment. I think the key is doing work that you enjoy. Back to analyzing brain scans now...
  12. Next time you jump on a no wind day get someone to video your landing. Preferably someone qualified to go through it with you and help you to get your flare dialed in. It's really helpful to see it on video rather than replaying it in your head.

    SLUTWALK

Actually, the walk doesn't involve dressing in any particular way. People can wear whatever they want. The name is misleading and I think takes away from the integrity of the event.

    SLUTWALK

It started in Toronto from some police representative comment. There may be one in your neck of the woods. For example, there's one in Tucson on Friday. There's one in Indianapolis in July, I'm putting it on my calender.
  15. How is it putting words in your mouth? You've repeatedly posted your description of the "typical engineering women" in the forums. I'm just saying I know many women in science and engineering and none of them meet your description. That may well have been your experience at your school but that doesn't mean it generalizes. That's not a well known fact and was not my experience at all. Most of my science classes were pretty equally split between men and women, some even had more women than men.

    SLUTWALK

I'm not sold on the title either but it's a great idea! Wish I still lived in Chicago, I would've joined in.
  17. It's the lack of sleep. I have chronic insomnia and when it's bad for a couple weeks it gets really difficult to concentrate for very long. Sleep deprivation can really mess you up. I've found the days when you feel like you really, really need lots of caffiene, it's best to skip it and just try and make it through the day. You'll sleep better that night. And believe me I love my caffeine. But it does make things worse when you are already sleep deprived.
  18. I agree, every degree should require some math and science. I think it varies somewhat by university. I went to Northwestern and I feel I got a very well-rounded education. The worst class I had to take was an English Lit class that was mostly on poetry. - I thought I would never make it through the semester. My classes were mostly science but I knew some english majors who still had to take a certain amount of math and science (and they weren't happy about it). However, I do know people who went to other schools who took no science and maybe one math class. I also think a computer programming class should be a requirement, I wish I had taken a programming class because it would be useful to me now. I am glad I took a lot of writing classes (mostly as electives) since I have a dissertation to write.
  19. I think you need to check your math. You don't have a 1.44 loading. edit: I see you fixed it.
  20. When I was a student I had closed end cells on pretty much every jump. I had a .5 wingloading. That stopped once I got closer to a 1.0 loading.
  21. Hey what's wrong with hiding in academia? I like academia, the real world sucks.
  22. She's beautiful! Congratulations!
  23. Yeah, I'm busy most of the time so I'm all for multitasking, but certain tasks require full attention. I consider driving and shaving my hoohah to be separate events.
  24. That is a very busy schedule, I hope you get a break after finals. Good luck this week!
  25. Maybe I'm too nice to my assistants. They've worked hard all year for me, I think they deserve the week off to focus on their exams. Too bad you still have to be in the lab.
