  1. We could have a thread full of common misconceptions like this. Glide angle and glide ratio, camber, lift direction...
  2. I think you could be a bit more patronising if you try.
  3. I'm not sure about that statement. I think it depends on the canopy. Mainly how it's trimmed.
  4. Can anybody suggest somewhere for me to go test jumping for a week or so in the spring? Budget is not massive so that kind of rules out USA unless I can get some very cheap flights. And also a DZ that is cool with this kind of stuff.
  5. Thought this thread could do with an update. In July I qualified for my BPA advanced packing certificate. Basic rigging is next. I've built an evolution of the not so successful orange 7 cell from 2 years back. It has a thinner foil and steeper trim. I'd like to use it to investigate deployments from paragliders and other slow aircraft. I don't have any pictures of it finished yet, but it looks alright.
  6. If you're sat behind someone in a forced landing situation, while wearing a chestmount, you are kind of fucked though.
  7. I found that quite interesting and it got me thinking. It can't be beyond the wit of man to get me a domestic-sized laser table at a reasonable cost.
  8. I got kicked off and given a free jump when this happened. But in this scenario, tell the 4 way to get stuffed.
  9. Why do Americans love Reflexes but hate Teardrops?
  10. If you go for a full fitting main and reserve, you may have the small, minor problem of the reserve not coming out when the ripcord is pulled.
  11. Any updates recently? I was interested to see where this would go.
  12. From the looks of the images in your very first post, it looks as though you might have rotated your rib about the horizon rather than a line parallel to the bottom skin or angle of attack. This is what I or Lee would call a negative 'twist' where the panels are narrower at the front, and it's a bad idea. The end cells of any canopy naturally have a lower angle of attack anyway, so if you twist the canopy, it makes sense to make it zero (like I have done) or positive. I hope that makes sense
  13. Yeah my anger is misplaced. You can summon me again by saying "a 150 is a large canopy" 3 times in the mirror at midnight or something.
  14. I'm sick of hearing this shit. What on God's green earth are the disadvantages of having a canopy that's too big? And do they apply to you? Sorry for the outburst, it's nothing personal. There is someone at my DZ who is convinced that he 'needs' to be on a 170 because "it's where I need to be", and despite the fact that he can't finish the flare on his 190. It's winding me up.
  15. I'm looking for Manley Butler's book on ram air wing design. If anybody has the ISBN I can go and get it from the library. Thanks
  16. What program did you use to design it? I might have a go myself.
  17. For PD they're in the reserve manual. Here: http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/Reserve_manual.pdf Right at the end I think.
  18. Trolling the web earlier, I found this old thread: http://www.dropzone.com/forum/Skydiving_C1/Gear_and_Rigging_F6/Student_makes_his_own_canopy_P2822802/ Does anybody know what became of that guy or his canopy?
