  1. If you tell a big lie over and over more and more people will believe it. Especially if it's something they want to believe anyway. "My mind is made up. Don't confuse me with the facts." The good news is that we maybe shouldn't as worried about climate change. Trump will bring about the end of the world before they put a Coast Guard station in Atlanta. 2. Fascism /ˈfæʃɪzəm/ is a form of radical authoritarian nationalism, characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition and control of industry and commerce that came to prominence in early 20th-century Europe. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism So thats worse than the thinking of some that a symbol should not be displayed! Yikes. In your lifetime which presidential administration comes the closest to fitting that definition? The first that comes to mind is Nixon. Probably because I've detested him so much for so long. With his secret police headed by Hoover I thought that the revolution had to be near. But Lincoln may be included in the discussion. He had good reasons and I believe he would have relinquished the powers he usurped. Our practice of a representative democracy has incorporated something the original framers did not foresee. Back then, only land owning males were allowed the vote. Probably because they were the more well educated and could consider their own best interests. But now everyone has a vote if they choose to exercise it. That's a good thing. But the down side is that the average/mean (I'm not sure which is appropriate) education level has come down. A lot, I think. With about 50 - 55 percent voter turnout it's 25 to 30 percent of the electorate choosing our representatives. These motivated voters are usually the ones with the torches and pitchforks chasing the monster. The leader of the mob has used free speech to whip up the frenzy. Free speech should be sacred. If the leader of the lemmings convinces everyone to "run off the cliff" then everyone should have the right to do just that. I think that's what we saw last November as well as the midterms in '94. I'm sure some would say that's what we saw in '08 and '12. If the voters choose, then that's what they should have. The voters in the Gaza Strip chose Hamas, a terrorist organization to be its governing body. The world was horrified and some even advocated intervention. But how could they and still say people had a right to choose their own fate? If a crazy person convinces enough people what are the "rational" ones to do? All we can do is wait for the next election and try to motivate our own mob. Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done. 3. In the 6th or 7th grade when we were learning about the Constitution, I remember the quote, "I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it." I've forgotten who it was attributed to but I've always taken it to be the essence of free speech. Everyone has a right to have an opinion and shout it if they so desire. No matter how lamebrain it may be. Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done. Louis D Brandeis Where are we going and why are we in this basket?
  4. He just says shit that is blatantly false. "The health plan won't hurt anyone", "The tax plan won't hurt the lower income people". If you tell a lie often enough people will believe it. 6. I had a very good skydiving buddy in the late '80s who went to "the boat school". The Naval Academy. We had lunch almost every day at the airport bar in DeLand. He told me that he was his summer cruise when the second incident "took place". He was sent to a carrier for some exercise so he wasn't on the ship when it supposedly was attacked at the time, but when he got back no one he talked to knew of any attack. The program showed how "labels" started the sequence of events that led to the shit sandwich that was the war. If Truman had given Ho Chi Minh some help in '47 things would have been very different. But because Ho called himself a communist Truman ignored him. Ho was a nationalist in the strongest since. He wanted Viet Nam for the Vietnamese. We would have had a friend in the area and in spite of the communist label he would have kept China out as he did in the late '70s. 7. . The Johnson administration taught us to distrust the government. Even with the war protests and civil rights issues I still generally had hope for the nation. I hoped the civil rights movement would go further. I'm still disappointed that the war stopped 20,000 lives later than it could have. At the time, I thought the country might be on the verge of some kind of rebellion with the passionate liberals rising up against the complacent conservatives. It never happened with Nixon as POTUS and things seemed to work out and settle back down. Today we have much more passion on both sides and it feels like we're just waiting for the spark to set it off. There are several quotes to the effect that the United States will never be conquered from any outside enemy but we will destroy ourselves from the inside. Maybe if we could find one thing to agree on. Any one thing. No matter how small. And then find one other thing. And another. Perhaps we would find we have more things to agree on than disagree. 12. He's a huckster, a snake oil salesman. "This tonic will cure whatever ails you." "This building project will make you rich." He's been selling his bullshit forever. If the project isn't successful, he bails and leaves the other investors holding the bag. Even when the project works it's never as good as he said it was going to be. If it sounds too good to be true it's probably bullshit. That's what his campaign was all about. And a lot of people fell for it. 13. I agree with all that. As far as it goes. But one bad act can cancel out a lot of good acts. That's what happens when one of those who act responsibly and professionally doesn't speak up against the bad apples. All that evil needs to succeed is for good people to do nothing. 15. I'd agree with you. As for his time in office, well . . . . . . Jerry Baumchen He was horribly ineffective in office, but has since turned into one heck of a decent human being. Even better than Richard Nixon turned out to be, which was pretty good too. I think he was always a good person. Maybe that's what made him so ineffective in office. Nixon? Really? If not for W and Trump he would still be at the top of my bad POTUS list. Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done. Impeachment

I don't know where I was or what I was thinking. If a Democratic Senate acquitted Clinton, (who was demonstrably guilty of lying under oath) then I don't see a Republican Senate convicting Trump. Impeachment

How is the term properly used? Am I correct in saying that Pres. Johnson (the after Lincoln) was impeached by the House and acquitted by the Senate? Pres. Clinton was impeached by the House and found guilty by the Senate but he was not removed from office. So impeachment doesn't necessarily mean removal from office? 23. I doubt this is in the top ten but... Electric stars were popular for a while in N. Fla. Take a lamp cord, split the 2 leads, strip the insulation. Make a "star" with maybe ten people. the ones on the end each grab one of the leads. That completes the circuit. With ten people, there's a mild tingle until someone lets go to drop out. The remaining people reconnect and with fewer people the tingle is noticeably stronger. I've gotten down to a 3 person star and it was impossible to stay still. Every muscle in my body was contracting. (Alcohol may have played a part in this behavior.) Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done. 24. Your thread tittle is disingenuous. (Did I use that word correctly?) It had nothing to do with the security assholes being muslim. The Kurdish Americans who were protesting may have been muslims also. This was a case of security thugs trying to run off people who were doing what they are allowed to do in this country but not in Turkey. The security thugs aren't used to that sort of thing. Religion had nothing to do with it. Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done. Louis D Brandeis Where are we going and why are we in this basket?
