  1. QuoteTom: "Some things can be indicative of a lack of attention to detail without being life threatening. It's important to pay attention to those "gentle" reminders, because in BASE, eventually the reminders will stop being gentle." Tom, another reason why I like your input! Joy [email protected]
  2. Greetings all! Definitive answer: A tailgate is at the end of a pick-up bed. You open it, put down a blanket, lay down, focus your camera, put on your head phones to Pink Floyd and wait for your cell phone to vibrate, then shoot. Newer memories for sure! Joy PS. On vacation for a bit, back to the numbers in about 10 days. [email protected]

    old/new SL technique.

My first jump at New River in 82 was using a piglet skydiving container with 2 rubber bands as loops where I just pinched the bridal into both loops. Only difference is it was freefall so I had a pilot chute and it was just as simple. Rick H [email protected]

    BASE#38 the Fed

Thanks guys. Sort of scary knowing I can sleep late Monday or get up early and ride my bicycyle on Galveston Seawall after 30 years of climbing over my brother's passed out body and Rick Payne's since I had to go to work after a 3 AM BASE jump while they slept on my floor for 10 hours. I told Randy's wife to make a spot for me outside their bedroom so my brother will have to climb over my passed out body to go to work. Pay Back is a bitch.. Payne called me at 1 AM Thursday just to make sure he could wake me up in the middle of the night before my last day of work.. I know my new ACE 280 is going to get more of a workout since it lands these old broken bones like a feather. Now I doh't have to worry about my job, we may even get back in the Building business. Nick, I'd love to have you come to Houston so we could check out the old dropzone downtown that Smitty, Kevin and I used to haunt in 82 to about 87.. Hell, I even cliimbed a 1700 footer a few weeks ago so I'm ready to enjoy retirement with bikes, canopys and kayak. We've had some good times at New River. Remember the floods 10 feet over the sandbar when John and Chris Dargon couldn't even contract witih the boats so you and I and and Jean voted to give the permit back to the NPS that year. Remember the Chief Ranger told Redfunn they wouldn't bust us if we made good faith efforts to hit the winding road to the bottom as they didn't have jurisdiction then over the roads. What a circus, the tree landings were a blast to watch and Chief Ranger Blake was even impressed that we could do that shit without getting hurt too badly. The great old days. We're not done yet are we buddy? Rick [email protected]

  16. Hey BASE Folks: Surprise Surprise, the correct answer is nearly ALL OF THE ABOVE. It does involve the Honor System since We rarely ask for proof of any jump. There are many right answers as to what is a B, A S or E. I knew and jumped with Carl. Smitty and I were the closest jump friends here in Houston from 82 to 87. I was the last elected Ex. Dir. of USBA after Carl died so I know the history of all of the theories. Carl did try to find a way to fit all objects in one of the 4 categories. It was the idea of BASE representing in one word , all fixed objects based mostly on the unique hazards of the objects. I use the same philosophy. That is where the wind thing came from since wind is our main enemy that is different with each of the categories. Joy and I operate on trust and the honor system. If a jumper wants to count a big smokestack wth the same wind and 180 opening problems as a B, then it's a B. If it is a real B but is unoccupied, it is still a B since it is the same hazards, The main difference an occupied downtown B represents is the arrest scare factor. That is an added rush after the escape, but it doesn't mean a vacant building is not a good B, it is. I must admit, my most memorable Buildings were downtown skyscrapers involving outwitting security and making a clean escape. An added rush I wish we didn't have to endure but Smitty and I always shook hands twice. First after we landed unhurt and second, after we got on the road and escaped. For all jumps, we look at the relative hazard and are flexible with the category if it's reasonable. Most jumpers actually wait until they get all 4 righteous objects. Personally, I believe you should do a real skyscraper, even a short one with people, guards, and downtown to get the true thrill of a real B, and several folks I've encouraged to do so thanked me when they did. It's a real rush. Most Whuffos know what a Building is. After you do it you will know for sure. Dams. are Earth jumps even if occupied since they present the same wind and object strike hazards as an E. Many things can be towers, including smokestacks. But if you want the real rush, do a real antenna with wires at night. They make a huge psychological and real hazard on a dark night over smokestacks or free standing towers. We'll count the others, but when you do the real thing, youre gut will know. Keep Celebrating the Human Spirit!!! Rick Harrison Cliffleaper BASE 38 [email protected]

    BASE family

Greetings all, Been gone for four days, Key West was great! Numbers back on track next year. I read dissension and confusion among my people. Remember, we are family, period. Best to everyone in this world for 07. Joy [email protected]
  18. Hey Mark. Nice to hear from you. I still have the old Patagonia red long sleeve pullover I traded you in 85 at Ardmore OK when we did the tower for PM Mag. Copy me on any scanned shot of Hoov and Chris if you have it to [email protected]. Tactically, rounds are safer close to a wall since they will not deflate if you hit one, but they land hard and can't travel to a good landing area if you need to. Now days, its as much about comfort and not getting hurt as opposed to just living through the jump. Rick H. [email protected]
  19. 460 IS CORRECT. The train jump was in 1983 from a 300' high railroad bridge. Phil Smith jumped first and me 7 cars later. We used a 52" parainovator big mesh pilot chutes in the right hand and an 8 foot inverted center reserve in the left hand. The reserve was on short lines and we just connected the reserve by a locking carribeaner to our left large 3 ring. We held the skirt of the reserve and the 52 very tightly so as not to get drug off the train before we were ready and over the river since the train was doing at least 45mph. The canopies were both 16' diameter, inverted pulled down center parachutes in a free bag system. The mains were in Velcro Base Rigs that Carl Boensih and Smitty had. Boenish and Smitty owned the 16 footers. They were so light that it took almost no pressure to pull down a line to slip the canopy. On my jump, it was a white, very thin profile canopy and as I nearly approached the huge bridge column, I slipped it away from the concrete and nearly dumped all the air out of the canopy. I hit the water with a strong oscillation, knocked the wind out, but I was fine. The Engineer saw us jump in the rear view mirror and asked our on top photographers when they stopped 80 miles up the road if we made it OK and they said yes. Park Service hit us with Powerless Flight, but my Motion to Dismiss got both of us off. Boensih was filming from the cliff, PM Magazine filming from a helicoptor and Kevin Vennel, a friend who also jumped the train once, was on top with me filming my exit. The Good Old Days!!! Glad we lived through them. Rick Harrison BASE 38 [email protected] [email protected]

    Bodil Roland Heen.

This is Rick Harrison and I'll let Jean know about Bodil's death. My brother Randy and I met her in Andelsnes in July 1999. We were in Norway as Thor Alex's guest. After Thor Alex died at Kjerag we went with a good friend to do Troll. Bodil was 83 then and had just hiked up Mt. Kilamanjaro 2 years before. She was so proud of that climb she had a nice T-shirt that said she climbed it at 81. She even danced a jig for us. Spunky lady. Her deceased husband Arne was known as the best climber in that part of Norway in his day. He discovered most of the climbing routes up the Troll and is the man who introduced the best exit point off Troll to my old friend John Mjoen, Norway BASE #1. Arne found a route up to the Spire and then told John, "There is something you need to see". John went up with Arne and John became the first to go off that exit. John died in 94 in Denmark on a tandem skydive. Bodil kept a large BASE/Climbing museum in her basement and has a ton of old photos of Arne climbing and of Carl and Jean and other early Troll jumpers. She was truly an amazing women.
