  1. When I said less restraint, I don't mean that I would have turned my troops out to ransack the city. I would have still played by the rules, but I guess what I mean is, I would have been much more frustrated and vocal than they were. Most of the Brits I have known, seem to be much more restrained than Americans. Accoridng to them, the SAS knew who, and where, every one of the thugs lived. But because of political, and who knows what other reasons, they were not allowed to make a mass sweep and round them up. That would have been very hard to live with every time one of my troopers got hit by a sniper, or injured by a random car bomb on the street. Reducing the number of scumbags on the street, and reducing the odds of harm to everyone, would be a wonderful thing. Knowing it was possible, and then not seeing it done, would be a most frustrating situation.
  2. You missed the point. Devildog(thank you very much), pretty much summed it up. And no, that is not what my mother taught me. If you look at post no. 20, you will see my thoughts on troops getting out of line.
  3. Thanks, glad you found it amusing. And no, it was not directed so much at you, although you seem to be making a career on this subject, but because of the country you had posted, Ireland. Where so much wrong was done to a lot of the wrong people, innocent civilians. I had friends that served in the British Army there, and they showed much more restraint towards the terrorists, on both sides of the Irish problem, than I would have. As far as seeing the American military as a 'sacred cow', beyond reproach, I don't. If you cross the line, you need to be held accountable. There were times that I saw the anger and frustration of my troopers, but I didn't condone any out of line behaviour. The first respondibility of any officer, is control of your troops. Otherwise, you don't have an effective military unit, you have a mob. Most troops are young, and tend to make rash decisions based on emotion, that is part of being young. As an officer it is your responsibility to control those rash impulses, teach them and lead by example. I hope the military will weed out the ones that stepped over the line, finish up the war, and bring our boys home. And they need to take a hard look at the officers that were leading any of the ones that did step over the line. Cheers!
  4. Kind of reminds you of Ireland, without the Black and Decker drills, of course. Are you sure these are US troops, and not an Irish unit? Since you have made it your mission to point out every mistake our troops make, I have no doubt you were doing the same thing during "the troubles" in Ireland, when your fellow citizens were running wild torturing and blowing up each other up. Which was much more fun than having to face the British Army, and having your ass handed to you on a platter. But that is the mark of a true coward, target the weak and helpless. After you have worked to bring the criminals in your country to justice, then you can devote your time to fixing the rest of the world. Just because things have calmed down over there doesn't mean that the people that murdered, tortured and planted car bombs get off scott free. They need to be hunted down and brought to justice. They were nothing more than common criminals and terrorists. When you clean up your own backyard, then come talk to us about helping with ours.
  5. Maybe you have it all wrong, and she just wants to help you find Jesus.
  6. Does this remind anyone else of a second rate imitation of Dennis Hopper's character in Apocalypse Now? Someone call in the airstrike.
  7. It is harder finding gear for us bigger guys, or if you don't want to jump small canopies. I was looking through the back classifieds this morning and saw something that might work for you. A Dolphin D 6, brand new, for $1050. Will probably have a large or x large harness. If needed to be let out some, Mike at Altico is very reasonable on it, and quick. It will take up to a 280 main and a 240 reserve. Or you could put a PD Opt. 253 reserve, if you wanted something larger. It said it had never been jumped, and the cost is less than a lot of 5 year + h/c I see for sale. Might be worth checking with them and see. They might take a little less. If interested, go to the classifides and type in Dolphin in the search box. Best of luck.
  8. Another reason you always carry a hook knife. One swipe, and your life would have been much less exciting. I always have at least one knife, whether doing CRW, or filming. Glad you survived.
  9. I don't watch televsion, so not having seen either, can't give an opinion. However, I can't believe no one has asked where "the boobies" option is.
  10. I used to live there, and have seen the crocs. in the river. There are lots of them, and very large, up to sixteen feet. She is lucky beyond belief.
  11. Well, you topped mine. Got out of a J-3 Cub at 900, all the pilot could get, and took a delay. Had to flare with rears, no time to get toggles out. Wouldn't try that with todays canopies. Kicked off dz for two weeks. And no, I am not advocating doing this now. Just came back to the sport this year, and things have really changed. What we used to think of as normal opening altitude, 2000-2500, is cause for panic now. Taking some getting used to.
  12. I had a photograph of the hand and forearm, sticking up out of the ground, with a ripcord in the hand. The story I heard in the early 80's, was that it was the mummified remains dug up from an Indian burial mound, by the Casa Grande crowd. Supposed to have happened in the 70's. If you could find one of the old crowd, that didn't bounce, maybe the real story would come out.
  13. Glad to see you are taking a more level headed approach to jumping than a lot of newer jumpers I have seen over the years. You might try USPA's website and see if they have a link for SIS. If not, email them and ask if they have a way to contact members in that area. I should think contacting Z Hills would be the way to get in touch with the lady that was mentioned in the post. If she is a regular there, they can get you connected to her.
  14. MK, getting on a load is not going to be your problem. Guys love taking "super hot" looking girls on the load. You just need to make sure you don't get on loads that are so far over your skill level that safety becomes an issue. You can find lots of fun and challenging loads without getting in over your head. Have fun!
  15. Thanks, Wendy. Appreciate the help. Will look for a copy of the book. Maybe it will have the complete packing instructions in it. How did that Tri 120 I sold you work out?
  16. Need some help locating a Pursuit CRW canopy manual. Lost mine in a house fire this summer and it has been so many years since I packed it, can't remember. Thought it would be fun to drag out for our very casual CRW jumps. Will buy a manual or pay for photo copy of packing instructions. Thanks.
  17. Thanks, will give this a try Friday.
  18. Just bought a Spectre and would appreciate tips on flaring. Different than my Tri's.
