  1. I've linked a few articles from the mental health field, I have yet to see one that says they can diagnose the at large US population for their likelihood in misusing a firearm. They can recommend treatment because of past actions and the fact that they're undergoing that treatment kicks them into state/fed law restrictions. Their interest is treating mental illness not getting into the business of who can or can't own/possess/transport a firearm. I think we've adequately covered the idea of the US government overseeing anything of this nature. Here are the state by state laws: http://www.ncsl.org/research/civil-and-criminal-justice/possession-of-a-firearm-by-the-mentally-ill.aspx Views of American Psychiatric Association's president, Dr. Renee Binder: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/science-isnt-golden/201510/top-psychiatrists-stunning-announcement-about-gun-violence Mass Shootings and Mental Illness: https://psychiatryonline.org/doi/pdf/10.5555/appi.books.9781615371099 I think having a PT (psychiatric type, I hate retyping this stuff) on the list during these discussions could help a lot. As you say, if I'm reading you correctly, a lot of the things we suggest are just way beyond realistic. Imagine a group of PTs trying to come up with new methods of counseling. They discover that by spending 20 minutes with someone in a wind tunnel they can reach them at a deep level, but not quite deep enough. Something like that. So they decide that the next step is to exit an aircraft and spend 20 minutes using the same mental exercises as in the wind tunnel. And they go ahead and put a lot of time and thought into this. One skydiver saying "that's physically impossible" would have saved them a lot of time wasted on a dead end.
  2. I think it would be great if we had an actual psychologist or psychiatrist to join in. And thinking that made me think about something else. When it comes to jobs and backgrounds skydiving is a very mixed bag. A D18 load at Ravenswood would include a telephone repairman, a guy who works at an aluminum plant, a couple of military types who were experts in their fields, a heart surgeon, a guy who lived in his car, coal miners and so on. But I can't remember every jumping with a psychologist. Is this just a coincidence for me or does something about The Sport keep them away? I know a couple of psychiatrists who fly their own planes but none that are open to the idea of exiting one.
  3. I haven't been watching a lot of tv lately. I go through spells but with the magic of DirectTIVO I can just store stuff up for when I'm in the mood. The problem though is that The Americans is finishing up, I think the final episode runs this week. And once that happens the big spoilers will be impossible to miss. I was watching the episode Rafifi tonight. I got a big plot point that was done in a very subtle way. It didn't look like any of the characters caught it. Sigh, I really miss the old IMDB.
  4. Anyone else watching the final season of The Americans.?
  5. Wait a minute, I need a license? I thought it was like a boat - if you own it, you just have to keep it registered. I'll look into it, thanks. Just a word of warning, like with boats they've started cracking down on drinking while piloting a plane.
  6. Another thing that can be misleading is increases in routes being blocked by ice. It would seem to indicate more ice but what happens is that as the ice gets thinner it's easier for the wind to break it up and pile it in places where it's not usually a problem.
  7. Oh, and summer is here. Let's see what sort of new records we can set for dead babies in the back seat because a parent was on the phone and zoned out about them.

  9. Benjamin Disraeli sounds right. I was simply using a different statistic than the one in which GUNS killed more Americans than did the ENEMY! It's more of a 'so what, Americans killed more of the ENEMY than Americans died at the hands of the ENEMY and GUNS put together.' I am, in fact, a lot more concerned with OUR death toll than I am with THEIRS. I also don't blame gasoline for arson or knives for stabbings. I guess that puts me in the minority here. Got it. I don't see a lot of hope. How anyone can miss the damage that our constant connectivity in the form of phones and social media are doing shows just how much damage they're doing. Kids are killing themselves and others over facebook postings, many adults cannot, not will not, cannot, put the phone down any moment they're awake. Cell phone holders probably sounded like a great investment not all that long ago but they didn't realize that so many people would just never put them down but walk around with it in one hand, angled so they don't miss anything that might come in. The last time I drove through Chicago I went through a construction site and saw grown men running grinding wheels with one hand while holding the phone to their ear with the other. And at work, watching janitors trying to run a buffer with one hand while using the other hand, again, to hold the phone up to their head for their non-stop "whuut, nothin'', how about you? Whuut, nothin." We are deeply screwed up and won't do anything about it because it might put limitations on something we enjoy.
  10. "The overall discussion brings to mind the quote attributed to Sam Clemens, whereby there are "lies, damned lies, and statistics." " I think it was Disraeli. But as far as wartime deaths go, I'm missing your point. A country attacks another country, starting a war. They continue doing things that make it imperative to the attacked country to stop them which can only be done by defeating them. But the leadership of the attacking country would rather they all die than lose so it takes enormous losses to finally get them to stop. Why then would it be the attacked country's fault that so many of the attacker's people died?
  11. I can't see him disappearing in today's connected world, and he's from the US (I think) so it's not like his home country would shelter him. But yeh, he's very rich so they know he could at least stall and embarrass them so they're being careful. And he has nothing to lose. He surely knows how bad prison will be for him.
  12. I think another big factor is time. Once someone mentions a timeline that includes us, as individuals, as long dead before it happens it gets much easier to believe that it's not real or it is but Science will fix it in time or some excuse.
  13. Roman Polanksi keeps ducking his calls. Very true. That was also 40+ years ago. The ability to track people has greatly improved. And I'm going to guess that prosecutors are well aware of the potential for flight. He reportedly surrendered his passport. Not that he couldn't have a fake identity set up and ready to go, but even that is nowhere near as easy as it was in the past (despite all the spam posts about getting fake ones on here ). Sorry, I wasn't meaning to use Polanski as a counter argument. I just thought the image was funny.
  14. Well, damn! Now you tell me! I never brought 'luudes, so must have missed a lot of opportunities. Sopers? It was a pill with many names. And uses. It may just be that I never heard, those were pre-cable news let alone internet days but I never heard of drugs being used for rape except for alchohol. Maybe it's later developments or like I said I just never heard of it. Unfortunately things like this tend to be ignored for a long time. But yes, methaqualone as a sex enhancement for women was like poppers for gay men in the 80s.
  15. I can remember when a lot of women's sexual pleasure was so enhance by qualuudes that they wouldn't have sex without them. Bring luudes or stay home. And it wasn't trading sex for drugs, the drugs were for her during sex. I remember this from the early 70s but that's when I was dating so I don't know what the situation was later. In 1973 Rolling Stones Magazine, hardly a proponent of "just say no" ran an article warning women to maybe go easy, those things can kill you.
  16. Assuming that was even possible, then what?
  17. Would you accept mandatory psychological testing every 6 months for every single American past the age of 8? About the whole psychological testing thing. Test for what? We're not talking measles here. What are these psychological markers that tell us that some day this kid will get bullied past the breaking point and shoot up his school? And who who would give them? Vulcans? Even if you could find psychiatrists with so many gambling debts to the mob that they,d be willing to sign someone off as safe or not for the money how many of them would we need? Come to think of it, has anyone ever asked psychologists or psychiatrists what they thought their chances are of finding anything that would help? It doesn't work that way, it's not like getting screened for an STD.
  18. Would you accept mandatory psychological testing every 6 months for every single American past the age of 8? There are two problems with that idea. One, it's not possible. And two, it wouldn't help. But that doesn't mean that I would be surprised if people started demanding it as a way to stop gun violence. In fact, it fits right in with most of the current ideas that are tossed out as 'if we just did that, but nobody listens."
  19. Any thoughts on how long Weinstein can drag this out and avoid the crossbar hotel? My guess is that he would off himself or get smuggled to Romania or something, but I thought the same thing about Sandusky.
  20. Works for me, and just about everyone else in a developed country. You just made a stretch that only a liberal can make! To Winsor's point; there are viable options for personal defense available. To your point, there are a considerable number of liberals AND conservatives that have started "conceal carrying" these: Fires up to 4 Separate Shots to 23 feet at 590 FPS from the nozzle High Grade OC Solution Not Considered a Firearm by ATF https://www.amazon.com/FIRESTORM-Shot-Compact-Pepper-Spray/dp/B06XVKRRQM?tag=bespepspronl-20 I wonder if I could rent one of those long enough to get rid of these damned cats. We have that one house out here, the one that among other things thinks owning a cat means getting a bag of them and letting them run free. When distemper gets the last one they'll just get another bag of them.
  21. What worries me, a lot, about the Cosby conviction is the way qualuudes in the 70s are being equated with roofies today. Nothing could be further from the truth, yet even one of the jurors said that what convinced him to find Cosby guilty was the qualuudes.
  22. These two photos were taken within the last week. I think that in many ways they sum up North Korea very well.
