I'm old enough, and in reality the Joint Chiefs owned that boondoggle in the desert.

Joint Chiefs of Staff are not in any operational responsibility or control of military action. They are military expierience/advisors to the Office of the Presidency and provide logistical support (not orders) to the Theater Commanders like General Petraeus, Navy Fifth Fleet and others. Theater commanders' COC is the President via Sec Def.

I just don't see the big deal about the quote.

Some individuals are more successful in utilizing family and public resources to build their successes. Resources that are not only available to him. But Obama's quote has the average less successful person believe they have some sort of special kinship on the indivdual's success. Never mind that they also have about the same resources and didn't make it work for them. Sometimes average people can't fathom why successful people are special. Obama is definitely one of these special people, but he misspoke here, or forgot for the purposes of politics how he is different.

Right on! It may never go to print, it may end up as a self published Kindle book, but we'll see. Stranger things have happened to less strange people.:D

May want to check out Nanowrimo.

You have gone much further than I have. I only have three chapters.

The Captive Air Amphibious Transporter, or CAAT, runs on an old principle that the U.S. Army has been testing since the early 1960s. By combining a tank trend with low-pressure air bags, the CAAT can spread its weight over a massive area while using air pressure to stay afloat in aquatic territory.

    :)

How is this better than air cushion vehicles that have existed for decades? I've crossed the English Channel on a hovercraft, and driven the US Navy's LCAC simulator.

    It's DARPA.

For every success story, there's hundreds of very silly and obviously ridiculous creations that don't pass practicality sniff tests or common sense.

    and like I said.

I believe that the "warranty" here is actually insurance vs. a type of guarantee therefore allowing the dealership to deny payout. Most extended warranties are just insurance plans.

No no she is a great person!
YOU HEAR THAT SENDERS OF NASTY GRAMS AND WARNINGS! SHE IS A GREAT GRAT GREAT PERSON WHO I FOR ONE WOULD LOVE TO BE STUCK IN AN ELEVATOR WITH!

    *whisper*
I bet when Asians see her they scream Godzillllaaa!
But when engineers see her they are sliding up to her at the bar...mostly due to the gravity field and lay some killer pick up lines on that!

I still envision her gracefully setting up for the dive into the water to get that fish!

Of course, the US Fish and Wildlife Service will be getting a lot of complaints. That could ruin a father and son fishing trip.

Is TLC really the acronym for the phrase 'The Learning Channel'? I find it hard to believe if they're running shows like this.

    From the comments :

    Quote

Dad, age 40. Mom, age 32. Oldest daughter, 17. Learning time! Mom was 15 when said daughter was born, and Dad was 23. We can assume that this means a 22 year-old man was "making love" with a 14 year old. 'MURICA!

I guess there is something that can be learnt from this kind of TV-programming.

Yup. Also, the discovery channel, history channel and probably soon, the military channel. I need my outer space alien and conspiracy theory fix:S

The single-combat tend to be a duel between two individuals rather than whole nations.

If single combat was used instead of wars and politicians had to fight on behalf of their nation, war would cease overnight and never be fought again.

No it wouldn't. If single combat was used, politicians who are willing to fight on behalf of their nation will be the ones who will be elected. Wars will not cease. It probably will increase and become a fun past time. But that's just fantasy. In reality, its long range weapons that prevent single combat. It's foolish for a nation to depend on Gentlemanship regarding the affairs of State.

Some countries take the Olympics so seriously...is it ever possible that we could use it to decide our wars?

No. The single-combat tend to be a duel between two individuals rather than whole nations.

Using David vs. Goliath style confrontations between armies became obsolete when mission changed to taking down a country, annexing, economic superiority and destroying a legitimate or percieved threat. All, which require the confidence of the winning country that the losing nation is not able to go back on their "gentlemanly" word of staying "defeated". Single combat was more of a "chivalry" idea that became dated with the introduction of logbows and other weapons. This is why the phrase "what happens if someone throws a war and nobody shows up?" is a naive thought. Or those who believe that robots in place of living soldiers as the future of warfare to save lives as a viable alternative is thinking too innocently.
