    During the 2017 Parachute Industry Association Symposium, Gary Peek gave a seminar on C getting a 1957 Cessna 182 for jumping.
    Gary's PowerPoint slides are available on the PIA website.



    The issue is not with the older planes. We can't import anything older than 20 years. And all the STCs that I could find online ends at 182R.

    If it has to be under 20 years old, you're looking at a 182S. Quick search shows used prices in the $150-200k range. I'm assuming there aren't any being used for skydiving yet, but I don't know. You'll have to make sure jump modifications are even available for it.

    Probably makes more sense to find an older model in India, but I'm guessing you've already tried.



    Good point. I wasn't aware that 182S or newer are not used for Skydiving.

    Couldn't find a way to figure out if any private party owns a Cessna 182 in India. None of the non-scheduled operators/flying schools have a Cessna 182 in India.

    Thanks for the links. Lot of new information. Seems sourcing an available Cessna 206 from within the country will be much simpler than importing a 182. Any drawbacks of having a cessna 206 as the only plane for your operations? I think 182 is/can be certified to be flown without a door for Skydiving operations but not 206. Which means for 206 we will have to get at least the door modifications done. Any thoughts?

    The Cessna Pilots' Association publishes an excellent guide book on purchasing a Cessna 182. The CPA guide will help you avoid many pitfalls.
    As for modifications (e.g. jump door) consult a company that specializes in jump-planes (e.g. Nevada Airlift).
    Prices will probably be lowest in the USA or Canada - because of availability - ... maybe low enough to offset the cost of stuffing your "new" airplane in a shipping container and shipping it to India. A shipping container is far lower risk than flying it to India.



    Thanks for the Info. How different is CPA from AOPA? https://www.aopa.org/ I am already AOPA member. Regarding shipping, I am worried about the Airworthiness Certification process after assembly. It might be more difficult than just flying the plane into the country.

  5. Looking for some ideas/guidance around getting a Cessna 182 for Skydiving Operations in India. Importing anything older than 15 years is approved case by case basis. Anything older than 20 years can not be imported in India. Can't buy new. I am skydiver and skydivers don't have money :)

    I think importing something from Europe will be the easiest. It's just 4000 miles (6000kms) away :) However, not sure how easy/difficult it is to get skydiving modifications (door & step, anything else?) done in Europe. What are some of the ways to transport it from Europe or even US to India? Any guesses around transport costs?

    Please share your experiences/thoughts if you have done or heard someone try something similar.

    I'm currently practicing and studying to attempt to get a Senior Rigger Cert. and looking for a round reserve to practice on. It does not need to be airworthy since it will only be used for practice packs. Have not had any success locating one in my area.
    Any help would be appreciated.



    Are you specifically looking for a Round Reserve or any Round will do? I have couple of rounds that I got, to practice packing. I am not sure if they are air worthy or if they are Reserves or if they have a deployment bag. I can send one of them to you if it will work for you.

    Christmas week? I think you're going to find most everything along that route closed for the winter until you get to California. Perris/Elsinore are open year round and aren't too far south of Rte 66.



    I hope by "most everything" you meant all the Dropzones and not all the businesses. It will shuck if all the business were closed too.

  9. I am thinking of driving from Ohio to California over Christmas week. I am planning to take Route 66 and was wondering about the Dropzones along Route 66 that I can jump while I am driving. Making at least one jump in every state I drive through will be great. Will prefer the dropzones where I don't have to take long detours! If your home DZ or a dropzone you know of, is a short distance from Route 66, please let me know.

    Different from my experience.
    I called ( a couple of years ago - I admit),
    got George Galloway on the phone and conversed immediately.



    After sending a message to George Galloway, on Dropzone.com, finally managed to talk to him over phone. He ensured that I get a canopy that will work as expected. Got a new Nitron this Friday. Made 4 jumps on the Canopy and everything works great!!!

    what are your experience with the company precision aerodynamics? I tell you, why Im ask: I have a new canopy from precision and have a lot of problems. I contacted them via email to get an idea, but I get no answer. Now I send a letter and wait. Has anybody contact to precision or know a way to reach the company?

    Were you able to get any response from Precision? I have been trying to reach them for almost 6 months now. No one picks up their phone. Sometime even voice mail is full. Even when I was able to leave a voice mail, no call back. Dropped emails to all the e-mail addresses listed on their site. No response. Feels I have been ripped off of my money.

  12. Thanks for the information. Will try to Precision Pack and see if that helps. Trying to reach Precision to see if they have any recommendation. Plan on making couple of jumps with my rigger, to see what's going on at deployment time.

    I psycho pack mine into a semi-stowless bag (Rigging Innovations). The canopy sometimes will hunt for a heading during the last portion of inflation, I have learned to steer gently with harness pressure only and I get better results. On normal jumps I get nice openings on a heading better than 80% of the time. I do get line twists infrequently with my Fusion on wingsuit jumps, but I have never had to cut away the canopy (just over 300 jumps on it now). It stays stable while I kick out, and hasn't ever tried to dive in twists. This stability is specifically why I chose the Fusion over a Nitron or Nitro, although I had better openings on a same size Nitron without the wingsuit.

    While the openings are occasionally off heading, from the first opening until the last one I had I have never had a hard opening (not even a firm one). The openings are incredibly consistent in terms of softness and altitude used. I had a Stiletto before this canopy and really appreciate the opening consistency and stability if it does twist.

    With a little over 300 jumps on the canopy it still looks almost new, the lines are not showing any wear, and I'm learning a lot about canopy flight.



    I am having the same issue with my Fusion 150. On first 4 jumps found the canopy always turning 180 right once it is almost inflated. On the 5th jump it spun me 360 (to the right). The only thing that I changed on this jump was the first stow was Right instead of the Left.

    I jump the same configuration as you are jumping - RI semi-stowless bag. Does your canopy always turn in one direction or the direction of turn is random? Have you seen any changes in heading depending on if your first stow is on the left or right? Haven't tried Precision Packing (Pysco packing) the canopy as I found it almost unmanageable to roll it into a bundle.

    Any ideas/recommendations that I can try to have consistent on-heading openings? I will practice Psyco pack and hope I am able to try that when I jump next time, which might not be before another month.

    I had perfect on-heading openings every single time when I jumped a rental Fusion 170. Never had any heading issues with whatever canopies I have jumped so far, except for Demo Sabre2 150 which hunted for heading on a couple of jumps.
