  1. Uhm, Argus also doesn't misfire in pressurizable aircraft. So it is a good replacement for cypres for jumpers in which this is an issue... I deliberately stayed away from bashing other AADs. Maybe you should do also. My experiences with the Vigil are the opposite of yours. The number of broken cutters over here are enormous, so much, that they can't / couldn't supply enough new ones. The Argus casing is cut from 1 solid piece of aluminum and the connector is the best connector IMHO on the market. Dedicated 3 signal pins and screwed tight. ( They didn't use a cheap design (e.g. like using an audio/video connector) like you are suggesting) Once more, bashing products will start a flame war, just mention the strong points of your "favorite" product. It's patent pending, so they can't state what it is... But if you look closely at the test report you van make figure it out... William could maybe comment on the how and if's. It's not radar altimeter though... The trouble with skydiving; If you stink at it and continue to jump, you'll die. If you're good at it and continue to jump, you'll see a lot of friends die...

Like stated, this has been debated several times. I jump an Argus. The Argus is increasingly used in Europe at least. The advantages IMHO: 1) Extremly rugged 2) water-proof 3) Swoop mode 4) No limited life span, but regular maintenance. 5) Maintenance in the field. 6) Extremly good customer service (if needed a replacement is sent within days, you return your unit after receiving the new one). And even the skeptics now agree the Argus is proven in the field. Forgot to add: Argus (Aviacom) is the most open AAD company out there. You can check almost every part of the device in their test report here: http://www.argus-aad.com/images/PDF/aaddesignandtestreporta.pdf Furthermore they do not only rely on air-pressure for their readings, which leads to high precision. 5. If he was truly informed, he wouldn't be asking about a cypres.... (but for instance for an Argus )... 6. But isn't this one of the selling points of a.o. Vigil? They have way stronger cables then CYPRES. Only thing is the connector itself is still similar, as far as I know, also on the Vigil II? The Argus has the best connector which actually screws tight... (and has better connections, with 3 seperate pins) The trouble with skydiving; If you stink at it and continue to jump, you'll die. 7. At the lab I work at, a machine called a FACS is more then 20 years old. It has a lot more components then an AAD and these machines are used to diagnose patients (and their lives). They are build in way smaller numbers then AADs (if you ask the company about a serial number, then can tell you where the machine is, and has been). And parts are still avaible. The manufactorer offers trade-in programs to get them out of service, but untill then, they are simply serviced. The trouble with skydiving; If you stink at it and continue to jump, you'll die. 8. Strange that you gave him the bowling speech.... His mistake was that he noticed too late he wasn't able to make it back. This happens with sub 10 jumpers. Educate he how to check if he can make it to the DZ. When he did screw up, he solved the problem, instead not doing anything and hitting a object (pottentially very dangerous), he took evasive action and landed downwind (not a big deal). Makes me wonder BTW who was he JM and how the spot? The trouble with skydiving; If you stink at it and continue to jump, you'll die. 9. chuttingstar give a nice overview of the 3 major manufactorers, so see his post for that. I prefer the Argus from Aviacom, for several reasons among which: * They have a maintenance program, but it economical priced and have several locations. IMHO "the best of both worlds" * They do not only rely on air pressure sensors to make their caculations, there is an extra sensor pack which corrects pressure readings. * They are the most open company of the 3. For an example see their one of their test reports here: http://www.argus-aad.com/images/PDF/aaddesignandtestreporta.pdf *Their service has been outstanding. I had one of the early units, which I had a minor problem with (nothing serious), called them, Karel Goorts (the owner) called me back personally within 20 minutes, asked if it would be ok for them to send me a brand new unit. This was ok for me.. :) (had a new unit 2 days later) I must add I got the Argus for a discount, as an instructor through my DZ. However I jump Argus because I believe and experienced it to be an excellent (maybe the best) product and strongly recommend it. 10. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec A codec is a device or computer program capable of encoding and/or decoding a digital data stream or signal. The word codec is a contraction of 'compressor-decompressor' or, most commonly, 'coder-decoder'. (for reference) The trouble with skydiving; If you stink at it and continue to jump, you'll die. 14. No, the pricing is rumored to be sub $3000,- Including a fixed lens. This baby is amazing... RAW 100 Mb/s recording at this pricelevel... Probably no need to take a photocamera anymore (framegrabs from RAW are probably enough) 2009 will be interesting indeed... For me only 1 question remains... I need a new cam, do I stop video jumping for a year, or do I buy a cx7 of sr11 in between... The trouble with skydiving; If you stink at it and continue to jump, you'll die. Well, both DV as Lanc (needed for cameye, and which this cam doesn't have) are dead, so it's not the best cam... Do a search in this forum, or look at recent postings... Topmount at the moment would be cx6/7 or maybe sr11/12 (if the Harddrive is fully deactivated (yet to be tested)). Sidemount maybe TG3/1.
